Spring things! 🌸 I love the look of these willow catkins, but it's no wonder why pollinators love them too 🐝 Catkins are made of lots of tiny flowers that provide nectar and pollen for insects before most other plants begin flowering 🦋 Willows are also fantastic host plants for lots of insect species and many varieties have a good deal of moisture tolerance, which means you can grow them in rain gardens!💧 #willowtree #plantid #pollinatorgarden

🌿 Lilac (Syringa vulgaris) is a lovely springtime flowering tree with a hypnotic scent and in addition to its loveliness, you may be surprised to learn Lilac has edible and medicinal properties! 🌿Lilac is a perennial member of the Oleaceae or Olive Family. Lilac is edible. The flowers are very pretty added to salads and to flavor waters. It makes an incredibly fragrant, floral honey as well. 🌿Lilac has been used historically in the treatment of such things as malaria, periodic type of infections, and fevers. Topically, Lilac's astringent properties are tightening to pores and complimentary to the complexion. Lilac has been used to heal other skin conditions such as cuts and scrapes. 🌿This is just some of the Magick that is Lilac! #greengirl #greengirlherbs #iamthegreengirl #plantid #healingplants #herbs #herbal #herbalism #wildfoods #wildfood #foraging #wildfoodforaging #lilac #syringa #herbalist #herbalistsofig #plantsheal #natureheal #healthyliving #local #hudsonvalley #hudsonvalleysmallbiz

Common Star Lilly, or Sand Lilly, or Leucocrinum montanum. It is in the Asparagaceae, and subfamily Agavoideae or the asparagus family. Previously the flower has been classified in the Liliaceae family or the Lilly family. It is still currently a debate. 📍It can be found in prairies, sagebrush grasslands, and mountain meadows throughout the west and down through Nebraska. 🔸6 petals 🔸 native to western states and is a perennial. 🔸Once the plant is done blooming in early summer the entire top part of the plant withers away. 🔸 Unique seed dispersal technique- they have a floral tube that comes from the ground, which is the ovary. The new floral buds push the seeds through the tI’ve dispersing the seeds! 🔹I found several sources saying that the roots are edible and can make a poultice to reduce swelling of wounds however I didn’t find anything like that in any plant id books I checked. #commonstarlilly #coloradowildflowers #plantid #asparagusfamily

Probably one of the most foraged plants found in the woodland . As with many plants so deeply connected to mankind it has a few names Wild Garlic , Ramsons, Bear Garlic etc. Caution must be observed when foraging to avoid some of its neighbours such as Arum / Lords and Ladies . Studying the leaves , flowers and stems , let alone the powerful scent allow for easy identification. A fantastic ingredient in soups , pestos , salads and many other wild spring delicacies. Some great health benefits with high levels of Vitamin C , Alliin and Methiin. Often found in woodland - Ancient woodland dating back to the 17th century . Elephantopus scaber. Asteraceae. Vernonieae. Elephant's foot in English, Tapak liman in bahasa Indonesia. This species is native to tropical old world including Indonesia. This species is flowering at the peak of drought season. Report says that the plant has flowering period between August to late October. In Western Java, the plant was observed that has peak flowering period in August and September. The plant has only vegetative organ outside the flowering phase. Based on phenology study, the seeds germinate in late rainy season. It will grow into mature and flowering less than a year after germinate. The cycle will repeated from vegetative to generative respectively every year, but occasionally depend on local temperature and climate change issue. #Elephantopus #Vernonieae #Asteraceae #Angiosperm #Plant #Flower #Tumbuhan #Bunga #Botany #Biology #Phenology #Conservation #Nature #Photography #PlantPhotography #FlowerPhotography #Nikon #D5600 #PlantID #Story #PlantoftheDay

Today I was parked near an unmowed area beside a large parking lot next to a local hospital, and there were a ton of these beautiful, daisy-like "weeds" growing in this obviously completely ignored area, so I yanked some out of the ground. I got good roots when I yanked them up, so I took them home, trimmed them back to a few inches tall, planted them in my sunniest flower bed, and gave them a good watering to - I hope - help them root where I've planted them.⁣ ⁣ Can anyone tell me what these lovely wildflowers are? Did you know WILD VIOLETS (Viola genus) are EDIBLE? That's right! You can eat the flowers and leaves, both packed with Vitamin A and C. Not only are they the cutest weed to invade your grass lawn, the flowers also taste pretty good too! The leaves are fairly bitter….but to each their own. Make sure to rinse them off and only collect them from areas that are chemical-free. They're also perennials, so as long as you don't pull them out by the root, they'll come back every year ;) I personally love these early spring boomers and am experimenting with using them as a native ground cover to replace my lawn. There's no need to mow them, and they provide food for the pollinators 🐝 #wildviolet #nativeflowers #edibleflowers #ediblegarden #viola #plantid #foraging #groundcover #springflowers #nativegardening #nativelandscape #lawnalternative #floweridentification #flower #ohioflora #nativeplants #nature #edible #weeding #forage #salad #themoreyouknow #nativeperennials #nograss #spring #nativegroundcover #education #funfacts

I happened across this nice habitat shot from way back when and still have no idea what this is (those fruits look distinct thought and worth a second look). STINKNET is still in bloom! 🏵️ Stinknet is an invasive and non-native plant that is a fire hazard and public health hazard all in one. It has a very strong aroma when pulled or damaged. Many people are sensitive to its smell, so please take care! How do you identify it? Take a look at this checklist: Does it have yellow, globe-like flower with no petals? ✅ Does it have small, carrot-like leaves? ✅ Does it have a strong smell? ✅ If you answer all yes - it's likely STINKNET and it's smart to pull it up! Does this flower look familiar? 🤔 Meet the Partridge pea (Chamaecrista fasciculata)! If it's ringing a bell in your mind, it should! We've been planting this at most of our recent volunteer restoration events around South Florida, and for good reason! This Florida native species is frequently found in pinelands and coastal uplands. It has low nutritional requirements & a high drought tolerance, making it the perfect plant for our beach dunes. Looking to plant this beauty in your own garden? Partridge pea tends to establish itself quickly, it's a prolific self-seeder and it's also fairly salt tolerant. It's also a nitrogen-fixer, so it may improve and enrich soils, allowing for the introduction of more demanding plants into your landscape! Again, these can all be kept in some areas of the garden but for today's clients they really needed to be removed so as to not completely smother everything else. Petalostigma Triloculare, also known as Long-leaved bitter bark or Quinine Berry is a dry rainforest tree of eastern Australia growing more commonly in sandy soil derived from granite and sandstone. The fruit matures from March to October and opens explosively, throwing out fragments of the fruit as far as four metres, and scattering the seeds. The fruit and leaves of this plant have been used by many different Aboriginal groups historically as an antibacterial, antifungal and contraceptive agent, and modern science backs these findings. I’ve nibbled at the fruit and it wasn’t a great experience due to the extremely bitter taste. Although edible, I do not recommend. It has been said tonic water can be made using the fruit Once known as Petalostigma quadriloculare var. glabrescens, Petalostigma glabrescens, Petalostigma quadriloculare var. glabrescens, it is now normally called Petalostigma triloculare, or just long leaved bitter bark/Quinine berry ✨ • #petalostigmatriloculare #longleavedbitterbark #sunshinecoast #easternaustralia #rainforestplants #bitterfruit #plantid #australiannatives #aussienativeplants #planteducation #nativespecies #natureexploration #quinineberry

Earth Day 2024 🌎 Few years ago, I visited an island 🏝️ in Hong Kong, and I am going to share some of the photos & experiences here today😆 The island 🏝️- Yim Tin Tsai (it literally means ‘Little Salt Pan’ in Cantonese). It used to be a place that famous for salt making 🧂 What makes salt that precious in 300 years ago? They preserve food nicely and there’s no fridge at that time~ And there are several things that really draw my attentions - The texture/ hard landscape patterns & colour of the massive salt pan - Combinations of traditional art and craft with the existing landscape contexts - And of course… it’s plant!! 😍 Kandelia obovata 🌱🔎 It’s a common mangrove plant species in Hong Kong. What’s special about it? ✨ It’s is reproduced by vivipary (it means the seeds of plants will germinate when it’s still attaching the fruit; and no matter does the fruit attach the original plant or not). It can resist with wind and costal wave 🌊. Although it is flooded by water most of the time, salt cannot get into the 🌱itself 😲 Plant research: Hong Kong Wetland Park (HKWP)|| Site research: HK tourism board Image reference: the close up photo of Kandelia (from HKWP)|| other photos were taken in summer☀️2021 #earthday #earthdaycelebration #earthday2024 #plantid #yimtintsai #鹽田梓

Today's Plant ID 😃 @norfolkschoolofgardening @rajulshahgardendesign - a gorgeous combo for a jam jar: * Sorbus thibetica 'John Mitchell' (whitebeam) * Chaenomales speciosa 'Moerloosei' (Japanese quince) * Deutzia x elegantissima * Rosa banksiae 'Lutae' * Choisya ternata (Mexican orange blossom) * Spiraea (NOT 'Arguta' but very like!) * Centaurea montana (perennial cornflower) * Leucojum aestivum 'Gravetye Giant' (looks like a snowdrop but isn't - later flowering, taller) * Myosotis sylvatica (forget-me-not to you and me ...) * Brunnera macrophylla 'Jack Frost' (very like forget-me-not but less invasive, with lovely heart-shaped leaves) #plantid #posies #gardendesigners #gardendesign #springflowers

During the spring work party we got a few more flat tent sites set up for these nice bell tents we have planned for some of the students in upcoming workshops. We regularly collect feedback at the end of every class and one thing we were finding was that there were often students who regretted not taking advantage of the camping opportunity. Some of the reasons they cited were not having experience or gear, not knowing what to expect or what else they'd need to bring, and so forth. As a result of this feedback Natalie decided to offer an option where carpentry students at the paint for campus could choose to have at tent set up for them for a flat per-class fee, and we made a detail video providing more footage of the campus facilities and options for lodging. We hoped this might help prospective students to see and understand more about what the camping experience would be like for them, and feel more confident they'd know what to bring (or not need to bring) as they make decisions planning their trip. That video, "Planning Your Trip," is available on our youtube channel and is on our website (scroll down and click this image at our bio-link to check it out): https://www.wildabundance.net/planning-your-trip/ Since making this video added several more of these nice bell tents, and in January a handful of folks did in fact book a tent to stay in during their carpentry or tiny house workshop this year, so we're excited to be opening up the camping opportunity to people who may have otherwise booked a hotel! Another neat project during the work party was putting up some pretty little string lights over a path in the woods so there's a little more ease and atmosphere walking between the campsites and the shower at night.

Happy Sunday Funday! Spring is looking beautiful and hopefully you are all finding the time to spend enjoy and working with your green spaces. This beautiful west coast native is in the Ericaceae family. It is very well liked for it's trunk, offering a variety of reds and smooth texture in its younger bark. As one of the largest species amongst it's genus it has an easy time standing out. It can be easily impacted by fire given its thin bark, however they are known to dominate post-fire vegetation with their vigorous growth. #SundayFunday #PlantID #PlantAmnesty #Identification #Environment #Education

Leaf arrangement is how the leaves are attached to the stem. Most field guides will have you key out species based on this. Also, you can sometimes tell lookalikes apart because they'll have different leaf arrangement even if other parts of the plant look similar. #botanybasics #plantid #leafarrangement
