The day was hot. The trail was shaded. The scenery was spectacular. The water was cool. Chimney Bluffs State Park is about 2 hours from Buffalo and a little under an hour from Rochester, so we decided to make a day of it! 😎 With the sun climbing high into the sky, the shade of the trail was a sweet relief as the beads of sweat began accumulating! The Bluffs trial guides you through the forest with some stopping points yielding incredible views. Boats peppering the water bobbed around, filled with people enjoying a day on the water. Gazing out over this picturesque scene, I felt as if for a few moments I was somewhere in the Mediterranean. We started the trail at the main entrance off of Garner road, with the 1.29 mile trail ending at a pebbly beach with the clear water of Lake Ontario rolling up to meet our feet💦 People were floating and swimming in the water which initially felt like bathtub water and then became cooler. I highly recommend this hike during the summer! That water at the end is truly a reward! 🥵

There's no better way to kick a hangover than hiking 16 miles in six hours! The first part of this route through Holland Ravines brought up the age-old question, "So, what exactly is a ravine?" I think we were generous in our definition because we counted 42 ravine crossings, when there were supposedly 34. Ultimately, the count didn't matter because after number 30, everything feels like a ravine. After ten miles and an unexpected downpour, our feet were rewarded for their hard work with 3.5 miles of road walking. Thank goodness for the final miles in Hunters Creek, where sweet-smelling pine needles carpeted the ground and cushioned our footfalls. Thankfully, nothing fixes sore feet quite like baked potato soup, chicken tendies, and #grimm afterward! Our dedication to the sport is starting to pay off. Over our first two long hikes, we went off-trail zero times. My body quickly conditioned to the distance after a season off. Work has begun to prepare for the resurfacing of the James C. “Jim” Fincher Trail Segment between Route 430 and Honeysette Road. We are very thankful for the support from The Sheldon Foundation, The Chautauqua Region Community Foundation, and our members to improve this trail segment. Culverts have been added and the trail has been re-ditched to improve water drainage. This project has been in the works for a few years, but we are SO CLOSE to checking this trail off of our bucket list. Please #givebigforcr2t this Thursday! The number of UNIQUE donors matters (as identified by the email address you provide), and just a small donation goes a long way! https://www.givebigchq.org/organizations/chautauqua-rails-to-trails Here's a little history on this future section of trail: We purchased a section of abandoned railroad bed in the Frewsburg area in 1995, but for various reasons, we were unable to develop the trail at that time. The "potential trail" has remained vacant for 24 years, but has been lovingly cared for by nearby landowners. Thanks to supportive /landowners and community members, and a few ambitious board members, we're giving it another go. The section of trail we plan to develop runs between Riverside Road (about half a mile from the Audubon) and West Main Street (Route 62) in Frewsburg. It's a beautiful setting, but much work is needed to make the trail suitable for hikers, bikers, equestrians and the like. To make this rail a real trail, we need to replace fill, remove old trash and equipment, trim back vegetation, inspect bridges and culverts, and add amenities like kiosks, benches and flowerbeds.
