I didn’t get a chance to pay rightful homage to the late, great #detroitsoul #legend, #FredBridges, who passed on Friday. I was a fan of the #BrothersofSoul since I was about 11 years old. Well over a decade later, I was conversing with my friend who had invited me to a #TNT show (don’t make me have to tell you what TNT stands for!). I was already excited to meet THOSE guys, then she said “you’ll love the Tops Road Manager, Fred Bridges.” I nearly dropped the damn Blackberry from my hand. Wait, is Fred from Detroit? Is he THEE Fred Bridges? She had always known him as this debonair Road Manager, never knew he himself was one of the baddest renaissance men in #soulmusic. So I sent her a pic of the BOS to see if he was indeed THE Fred Bridges and she immediately said “damn, Fred was fine back in the day!” Back then I was super-green and hella geeky, so I was prepared to bombard this man with all manner of questions. Anyhoo, my friend maintained that I would just loove him and he would just looove me, and so it was. I’d see him with the cats over the years, and I can vividly recall him peering over his eyeglasses and greeting me with a congenial, avuncular, “how you doin’, baby” or “hi young lady.” He looked out for me on the road in ways I can’t begin to get into here. I’d randomly email him to ask him about Ruby Andrews, or to get the chronology straight where the Brothers of Soul’s repertoire was concerned. And he’d respond always, signing off as FLB. Anyway, I’m honored that I was able to give this unsung, humble, spiritual, august titan of our music his flowers while he was still here to receive them. If you haven’t noticed, these people mean the WORLD to me!!! Salute, Mr. Bridges!
