Curtis/ Curtis Mayfield (1970) このアルバムはもともとCDで持ってるんだけど中古だったし、紙ジャケもボロボロだった。ちょうどタワレコでLPが安く売ってたので買い直した次第です。 朝日だか夕日だか見つめるカーティス。朝日？夕日？どっちだ？子供達と遊んでる写真もあるしな。そんな朝早くから遊ばないか。知らんけど。夕日だとしたら…この先は夜でも朝は必ず来る。差別や貧困が蔓延る社会に負けず、黒人としてのプライドを持って闘うんだという強い意志が伝わってきそうだ。子供たちの未来のために。輝かしい未来を夢見るかのようなカーティスの横顔は笑顔だ。（ジャケについての解説が見つからなかったので好き勝手に書いてます）こういったメッセージが今も必要とされてしまうのは何とも複雑なのだが…。 そして上記のようなメッセージがカーティス特有のニューソウル、ファンクサウンドにより構築され（Apple Musicの解説にはこう書いてある: 絡みつくワウギター、疾走するパーカッション、緊張感をあおるストリングスなど、ニューソウル勢の中でも際立って特徴的なサウンドの原型はすでに本作で確立されている。）、聞いてると勇気を奮い立たせてくれる。(Don't Worry) If There's a Hell Below, We're All Going to Go、Move On Upと名曲揃い。 一方、The Makings Of Youのような美しい愛の歌も良い。最後のGive It Upはパートナーとの別れを歌った曲で、このアルバムには合わないような気もするが良曲です。 さて次にLPで買い直すとしたら、同じくカーティスの「Super Fly」か？ジャケットの一部を紛失してしまったからな💦（写真参照） #curtismayfield #curtis #soul #progressivesoul #psychedelicsoul #curtom #album #lp #recordcollection #vinylcollection #vinyl #soulsinger #music1970 #カーティスメイフィールド #ニューソウル

5 Stairsteps & Cubie - Love’s Happening ‘69 🩷 Desert island record for me, likely in part due to when I discovered it. I had just lost my brother about a week or so earlier, when I found this record and a handful of others *The Sylvers first album and The Fabulous Impressions come to mind* at a local goodwill. I was near the height of my obsession with hip hop and sampling, and with these fateful records, discovered a deeper love for soul music beyond a search for a loop or break. The Five Stairsteps *and little Cubie* made incredible work of Mayfield’s songs here. Curtis shares a space with very few, he changed the way music sounded due to his oddly tuned guitar playing as a session musician in Chicago. He bridged the gap between doo wop and soul with The Impressions. He wrote songs with unbelievable depth. And he also made some great soundtracks In his day. Most know Superfly, but this one is very special and worth your time. When I think of Curtis the only person I could see him having trouble against in all of music’s history is Stevie Wonder. Pulling from the racks and finding some gems I’ve not heard for a while. Swipe for 🔊🔊🔊🔊 Ava Cherry’s debut solo LP “Hot” was released in 1980, recorded at Curtom and Sigma Sound studios and features 3 killer cuts that always sound great on the floor. I first heard “I Just Can’t Shake the Feeling” in an all 45’s set Danny Krivit played to celebrate his 45th year in the dj game and picked the LP up to get a copy, later finding that @paulofulci already had it for the uptempo Curtis Mayfield penned “You Never Loved me” The mid tempo bump of “Gimmiie your lovin’” rounds out this trio of heaters nicely and confirms this album as an insanely good value pick up given what it holds instore. The Staple Singers were one of my favorite Soul groups of the 1970s. Curtis Mayfield was one of my favorite Soul singers/performers/songwriters of the '60s and '70s. So imagine my delight when I learned that Curtis Mayfield had written (and produced) The Staple Singers' version of "Let's Do It Again" which rocketed all the way to the #1 spot on the Billboard Hot 100 chart! On this day forty-seven years ago, December 27, 1975, The Staple Singers' "Let's Do It Again" hit the #1 spot on the Billboard Hot 100 chart. It was the last major hit by the group. Wikipedia: "Let's Do It Again" is a hit song for The Staple Singers. Written by Curtis Mayfield, it was part of the soundtrack for the Bill Cosby/Sidney Poitier movie, Let's Do It Again. The single reached the top of the Billboard Hot 100 singles chart on December 27, 1975, the day before Roebuck "Pops" Staples' 61st birthday, and also spent two non-consecutive weeks at the top of the Hot Soul Singles chart. It was the last major hit by the group. The song was covered by George Benson for his 1988 album, Twice The Love, and was also released as a single. R&B quartet Xscape sampled the song on its first single, the remix of "Just Kickin' It," from the 1993 album Hummin' Comin' At 'Cha and four years later, the group sampled the song of the same name on the final chorus before the end of the song from the soundtrack to the film, Soul Food, both originally produced by Jermaine Dupri. Ice Cube sampled the song in the remix of "It Was A Good Day". Side One closes with another stomper ‘All Becouse Of You’ that holds a lovely instrumental where all musicians are fusing beautifully in the latter part of the track. The B side starts with ‘Lucky Fellow’ that will get any dance floor filled. Following this is the latest piece titled ’Classy Lady’. As compilations go, I would rate this one in the upper echelons of compilations.
