Pinning down frond bulbils of Woodwardia Radicans (European chain fern or rooting chain fern). The bulbils are produced on the underside of the frond, a couple inches in from the tip. As the fronds mature, the tip touches the ground and the bulbil roots and over time produces another fern. Over time a chain of ferns will form, supposedly where the name chain fern comes, although not all Woodwardias produce these bulbils. I've always know the common name of chain ferns to reference the sori pattern on the pinna The last two pics are of a bulbil I pinned a few months ago back in the autumn as a trial. Finding a caterpillar inching through my arm hair while I’m inside at the computer has become a pretty common occurrence. A few days ago I actually found a slug sliding across my glasses while I was wearing them. Of course I can’t focus on anything that close to my eyeball and had to take them off to investigate, putting on a different pair to actually identify. Might be time to toss me in the compost bin. On a separate and happier note, the fronds of Woodwardia orientalis are covered in little plantlets now, doing its Autumn color-turn the only way it knows how. The idea is that the frond will decay and eventually make contact with the soil—at which point its baby ferns will root and grow on.

feeling very fairy princess coded in this outfit!!! as promised, Woodwardia has made it to the grid 💜 I made this with @lainesdunord Vasto in the Rose colourway. I used every bit of 9 balls of yarn! I bought yarn for the size four but decided to knit the size five so the yarn chicken is thoroughly my own fault. This pattern has sizes from 36.5” - 79.5” and recommends 8-12” of positive ease. That means this suits chest sizes 24.5-67.5”. If my math is wrong please tell me, I’m bad at it! My version: #woodwardia Size 5 - 51.5” finished chest Fold over neckline but not long enough to fold out like the pattern sample so I’m gonna tack it down on the inside for a double neckline situation. Knit the body a couple inches longer. Stopped the yoke one set of increases earlier and added those stitches to the underarm cast on so keep the yoke from being too long, this helped with yarn chicken I think? Idk it’s the same stitch count regardless. Worn here with a linen dress from @notperfectlinen

Woodwardia radicans (L.) Sm. (Blechnaceae) 🌿 Straordinaria, di singolare bellezza ed eleganza, è una tra le specie più interessanti della flora europea. Caratterizzata da fronde che possono raggiungere lunghezze superiori ai 3 metri, viene detta “felce bulbifera” poiché la sua peculiarità è la formazione di bulbilli nella porzione apicale del rachide fogliare, che consentono la propagazione vegetativa nel momento in cui le fronde toccano il terreno umido, dando origine ad un nuovo individuo per via agamica. Oggi è da considerarsi un vero e proprio “fossile vivente”, difatti è una felce relittuale della flora del terziario che circa 70 milioni di anni fa caratterizzava le aree montuose di alcune regioni del Mediterraneo. Successivamente, con la crisi del Messiniano (6-7 Ma) con l'affermarsi del clima mediterraneo e successivamente alle glaciazioni quaternarie (da 2 Ma a 10.000 a), si è ritirata in alcune aree del meridione d'Italia, tra 200-700 m slm, dove le particolari condizioni geomorfologiche hanno limitato i cambiamenti climatici, creando delle nicchie microclimatiche stabili nelle pareti stillicidiose delle forre umide e ombrose e nel sottobosco delle ripisilve, con temperature invernali più elevate rispetto alle zone aperte limitrofe e con escursioni termiche, giornaliere ed annuali, sensibilmente contenute. E' attualmente talmente rara da essere tutelata dalla Convenzione di Berna e dalla Direttiva Habitat 43/92 CE. Woodwardia fimbriata aka giant chain fern.... common in Coast Redwood forests along with sword fern and Douglas-fir.... underplanted fern in Puget Sound, probably more common before logging and American settlement but I could be wrong. Reportedly still grows on Blake Island and other Puget Sound shorelines. Even with a north aspect I found it essentially fully hardy the last couple winters, possibly some minor leaf burn. In the wild leaves reportedly can get 5 feet tall.
