Wrath of God from Unlimited (1993), Portal (1997), and Dominaria Remastered (2023). One of the rares in my very first starter decks of Revised (1994) that I opened in January 1995, Wrath of God immediately stood as an epic card, even before I knew how to play the game. Hoover's distinct stained glass effect with the divine light, face in the clouds, and sea of slaughtered bodies elevates this piece to resemble a Biblical tableaux. Watching a Youtube video by the MTG Historian a few years back would draw my attention to some kinky clothing on one the bodies would eventually corrupt how I see this image, as now I always see the "wardrobe malfunction" (Janet Jackson's greatest gift to the English language) first. I'll admit it's a bit strange to include a card from the very first MtG set of all time in a week themed on "cards that changed the dynamics of the game," but I feel strongly about this one, Wrath of God, with us since the very beginning of MtG, poses curious implications about the game design in Alpha (1993). Creatures, in general, hovered around a much lower power level than where they are now, and three decades of power creep highlights this dramatically, especially right before Modern Horizons 3 (2024) releases in just over a month. Wrath of God, as the game's first mass creature removal spell, assumes a world where having creatures in play means inevitability to win the game, and changes the game by punishing players for over committing to the board. Mass removal spells in general are now called "wrath effects." The primary Scripture passage on the rapture is 1 Thessalonians 4:13-18. It states that all living believers, along with all believers who have died, will meet the Lord Jesus in the air and will be with Him forever. The rapture is God’s removing of His people from the earth. A few verses later, in 1 Thessalonians 5:9, Paul says, “For God did not appoint us to suffer wrath but to receive salvation through our Lord Jesus Christ.” The book of Revelation, which deals primarily with the time period of the tribulation, is a prophetic message of how God will pour out His wrath upon the earth during the tribulation. It seems inconsistent for God to promise believers that they will not suffer wrath and then leave them on the earth to suffer through the wrath of the tribulation. The fact that God promises to deliver Christians from wrath shortly after promising to remove His people from the earth seems to link those two events together. Another crucial passage on the timing of the rapture is Revelation 3:10, in which Christ promises to deliver believers from the “hour of trial” that is going to come upon the earth. This could mean two things. Either Christ will protect believers in the midst of the trials, or He will deliver believers out of the trials. Both are valid meanings of the Greek word translated “from.” However, it is important to recognize what believers are promised to be kept from. It is not just the trial, but the “hour” of trial. Christ is promising to keep believers from the very time period that contains the trials, namely the tribulation. The purpose of the tribulation, the purpose of the rapture, the meaning of 1 Thessalonians 5:9, and the interpretation of Revelation 3:10 all give clear support to the pre-tribulational position. Is this something to be fearful of? No! That is, if Christ is in you. If the world is at peace, the more distant I feel from my Messiah. When there is breaking news on the daily, I rejoice because His voice speaks to my heart the very words He said will happen before He returns. Those who hear His voice understand, those who do not pay attention will soon be overwhelmed with shame and anguish. The world will perish and the people today who have so much care about the things in this world will perish with it. Everything you've invested in, every valued treasure you've kept for retirement, every person you've made eye contact with will soon be refined in the fire and the dross will be purged. As it is written, "the fool says in his heart, there is no God", also, "there is no fear of God before their very eyes, all have turned away, all have become corrupt, there's no one who does good, not even one". The wages of sin is death...did you catch that? You're being sentenced to death because you were born in sin. Jesus came at the perfect time to redeem all of us, a perfect man who lived a perfect sinless life, became the bearer of sin for us and took the death penalty on our behalf. The shedding of His blood is what clothes us so that for those who believe, God sees as righteous people. Did you catch that? The creator of the universe dwelt with humanity and died for us in order to give us everlasting life. With that in mind, why do people still chase after things of this world? If He has power to create the universe, just imagine what awaits us that He has stored up for those who are faithful to Him. He wants fellowship with you, do you think an hour at church one day a week is fellowship? How would your spouse feel if you only spent one hour per week with them? Pray daily, read and study His word, talk to Him like you talk to a close friend, always give thanks. “It is finished” are the last words Christ uttered before He died on the cross of Calvary. Kind of a strange thing to say right before you die, right? Well, not if you’re the Son of God. “It is finished”, in other words, “the debt has been paid.” We have all broken God’s law and are worthy of the death penalty. We have sin against a holy God who hates sin. We are sinners who have transgressed against God. But “while we were still sinners, Christ died for us” (Romans 5:8). We do not deserve God’s love. We don’t even deserve His forgiveness. But because of His great love, He has provided a way for us to be reconciled. The wrath of God against sin and sinners needed to be appeased. Christ was the only way. On the cross, God saw His son as if He were sin. The wrath of Almighty God was placed on Christ. God is just and He will judge the world in righteousness. Because we have broken God’s law, we owe an innumerable debt. We cannot pay this debt though. Only by the sacrifice of another can the debt be paid. Jesus has stepped into the courtroom and paid our fine so that we can be cleansed of all our iniquities. Christ has given us the chance to be forgiven of our sins. He has done everything. There is nothing we can do to persuade God into letting us into Heaven. He has made the way. Jesus is the only way (John 14:6). Repent and believe in Christ today. So please, examine yourself under the 10 Commandments and you will see that we are all guilty before God. Today, turn from your sins and run to Christ.
