Мой образ вдохновлён, пожалуй самым любимым фильмом- «Леопард» от Лукино Висконти 1963 года. А источником вдохновения стал любимый князь дон Фабрицио Корбера ди Салина. Получился ансамбль выглядивший просто и эстетично, уменьшая до слова элегантность. И довольно точно соответствующий 60-м XIX века- века стали и пара. Recently sold this 1840s bodice likely made of Chinese export silk would have originally formed part of an evening dress, as is often the case the large quantity of decorative silk in the skirt has been unpicked and likely reused at some point in time. The bluebells are out! Visited Gaer Fawr woods near Guilsfield. This is the site of an ancient bluebell woodland and an Iron Age hill fort. It’s a bit of a steep climb up but so pretty and peaceful. I’m wearing my 1840s pink day dress, with a quilted petticoat (which I needed as it was 9 degrees up there) Neil from the Welshpool Camera club took the photos. *please note I took extreme care over the bluebells, I know how fragile and important they are. Inconvenience of Wearing Coffee Bag Skirts, 1848. Exploring the visual history of the global coffee industry can sometimes take you in surprising directions. I recently stumbled across this image, titled “Inconvenience of Wearing Coffee Bag Skirts,” by the lithographer James S. Baillie. It depicts an older man leering at a young woman descending from a carriage in New York City. Her silk skirt was caught on the door handle, revealing what was underneath — including an under-skirt made out of a coffee bag. Beyond this particular image, I have not been able to find any other reference to coffee bag skirts, and I would welcome comments from anyone who knows about the history of dress and fashion in the early nineteenth-century US. My best guess is that the heavy fabric of the coffee sack offered some structure and perhaps warmth to the overall outfit. There are further layers of skirts beneath the bag, to protect the wearer from the rough fabric. For the coffee nerds among us, the text on the exposed sack says “Old Java Burnt and Ground … Shillings Per Pound.” Some text is clearly missing. But if nothing else, we know that this sack was well travelled, having made its way from Java to the United States. And once it was emptied of its coffee, it then began a second life as an undergarment. The empty bags were likely being sold off at the NYC coffee exchange, to the nearby garment factories. This little episode invites us to think about the complex, subtle, and sometimes surprising impacts of the emerging mass production and consumption of coffee in the nineteenth century. The conical skirts developed between the 1830s, when the high waist of the Empire silhouette was lowered and the skirts became more bell shaped, to the late 1860s, when the fullness of the skirts were pulled to the back and the bustle developed. The flared skirts of the period gradually increased in size throughout and were supported by a number of methods. Originally support came from multiple layers of petticoats which, due to weight and discomfort, were supplanted by underskirts comprised of graduated hoops made from materials such as baleen, cane and metal. These young 8 to 10 year old boys have typical late 1840’s hairstyles that are swept forward from the crown. The hair first finely painted then a layer of Gum Arabic, then delicate gilt bronze highlights applied. [slightly suggestive second slide?] Some of my other 1840s oc’s! The man with the freckles is Vyecheslav, who is Yekaterina’s father, and the other man is Edmund, who is a doctor. Vyecheslav and Edmund met since Vyecheslav was in the military, and after his service he had a few injuries that that were kind of permanent, so that’s when he met Edmund. They kept seeing each other for business reasons, but they eventually found themselves growing closer to each other and fell in love. please experience the eighteen forties wave of English sunshine that was Mrs Emma Dillwyn Llewelyn (born Emma Thomasina Talbot, cousin of British pioneering photographer William Henry Fox Talbot), born September 23, 1806 to Thomas Mansel Talbot and Lady Mary Fox Strangeways (some sources mentioned 'Cole'). Emma wed Welshman John Dillwyn Llewelyn in 1833; the marriage produced, I believe, 5 children. The couple set up their life on the estate at Penllergare near Swansea in Wales. John Dillwyn Llewelyn took this daguerreotype of Emma around the early-to-mid 1840s; a sensible estimate for Emma's age at the time of this portrait would be around her late 30s. John was an amateur photographer from the 1840s, working with calotypes and daguerreotypes in his early days. A future post on John's work, remarkably proficient and superbly composed for an 'amateur' (however, as we have seen in the recent post of Mr Biewend's Germany daguerreotypes, amateurs were often arguably as skilled and artistically minded as their professional counterparts...) will shine a light on his admirable talents in the photographic field. But Emma: she found the light, and it reflected a countenance both poised and gentle, and filled with radiance and authenticity. She was having none of the staid and formal recipe some sitters were in favour of (plenty did break the mould, too, of course). Emma is proof that smiling WAS a reality for early portraiture. The problem with making things for hands or feet is that in general, you need to make two... I finished the first 1830's-60's boot last week, and now the second is giving me nasty looks. Anyway, here's the first one. I've attached a wool (ok, probably a wool mix) upper to a square toed ballerina slipper I bought a few years ago when they were everywhere. If you can't afford the fancy reproduction footwear, you have to make it yourself. The black lace needs to be replaced, but is what I had available. This portrait is constantly having assumptions thrown at it from know-it-alls who in fact have done diddly squat in the way of careful research. Many, many sleeping babies had their photos taken, and I can imagine it'd be rather an easier undertaking for all involved for infants to be asleep. Meet the Adams family, who sat for their daguerreotype in 1846. Pa is Henry Joseph Adams, Ma is Abigail Ridley Gibson Adams and slumbering babe is Anna Gibson Adams Kinsbury, born in 1845 in Walnut Hills, Ohio, and lived to her late 30s, passing away in 1884. She married NY Lt John Terry Kingsbury in 1871 and had 3 children with him. Anna died in 1884 and is buried in Pioneer Cemetery, Washington State.
