I am Masa 💎 (not Lulia) before I was discharged from the hospital my parents knew the problems that I will be facing but they had high hopes that everything will be fine! They knew that my brain scan wasn’t normal as I was diagnosed with PVL due to low birth weight ( you can look it up as it’s a long name) I also had chronic lung disease due to being on a ventilator for a long period of time, which explains the oxygen I have on! However my lungs 🫁 grew perfectly after 3 weeks of discharge when I started to gain weight more! I also had something ONLY premature babies get which is ROP retinopathy of prematurity! It’s an aggressive disease that hits the eyes .. will talk about it in another post So yeah 😊 let me know if you have any questions for me? ✨418 Day Home✨ As of today, Ellie has officially been home for one day longer than she was in the NICU. This feels like a huge milestone in our wild journey! We celebrated by doing all of Ellie’s favorite things to do at home: snuggle, play outside, harass the cat, and refuse to nap. We threw the routine trach and g-tube change in there too for good measure 😜
Holding your baby through countless tests, poking, prodding, and procedures never gets easier. And just when you think you have a grasp on it all, you’re facing a new challenge. The other night Clifford failed his “newborn” hearing screen. Yesterday we had more testing done by an audiologist and learned that Clifford has mild to moderate hearing loss. Basically, he can hear people talking but it’s very muffled and like the volume is turned down. Next week our strong little guy will be rocking a cool new hearing aid, and we can’t wait for him to hear our voices clearly for the first time. He’ll also be sporting a new helmet to correct his head shape. I’m so incredibly thankful for our medical team who continues to support us every step of the way and give Cliff the best care possible! My brave boy, your daddy and I are going to give you the most beautiful life. Our little princess did sooo good at her CT scan today!!! Because of her age they sedate them so it’s a lot more complex and takes more prep than just the quick 3 min scan. Nothing like having to check in at 6:30am 😴 We won’t know the results right away but praying they see the artery growth needed so that the 2nd step can be done in the cath lab and not a 2nd open heart surgery. This time three yeas ago, I worked a lovely shift with lovely people, I just over 23 weeks pregnant. I went home and my waters broke I went to hospital and the start of the worst and hardest six months of our families lives started. But I also find out how strong our little family unit is 💜🩷 And how many people will truly stay by our side and help. What a week this little girl had! From birthday party with a special guest, Vovó came from Brazil, and then we went straight into our 5th NAPA intensive. During this intensive, we are doing a variety of things, feeding (because of course we have taken various steps back in our long journey of eating orally), communication using an eye gaze device (she is able to make choices on a tablet using her eyes), DMI and PT. A lot of the motor skills are focusing on continuous strength of her muscles, abs and transition between positions, as well as walking. Clifford Brett is S E V E N months old — 3 months adjusted A few days late, but can you believe how big our little dude is?! The past month has been full of growth — so much progress, all the smiles, and a HAPPY baby! We’ve *slowly* been able to wean down Cliff’s vent settings, although he still has a ways to go, he is doing it!! He’s growing and getting stronger every day, and gets lots of compliments on his hair. He’s obsessed with his “binky”, eating his hands, kicking his legs and watching his mobile. He’s the biggest and oldest baby in the NICU and everyone knows him and stops to say hi. He’s become quite the popular guy! It feels like we can finally breathe a little easier these days, but it’s impossible to shake the fear that comes with this journey. But one thing is for sure, WE’RE DOING IT! We are so hopeful that Cliffy will get to come home this summer. If you could say some prayers that we continue to make progress, we sure would appreciate it. "Our Sophia Ruth was born at 24 weeks and weighed 1lb 9oz. My water broke and had a breech delivery 48 hours later. The first two weeks were touch and go. My husband and I were able to hold her for the first time after 6 days and have held her everyday since. After two weeks, we were told the pharmacists may go on strike, so they transferred her to another hospital for 10 days, 60 miles away until the negotiations were resolved. The first two months of the NICU were numbing. We spent the holiday season from Thanksgiving through New Years in the NICU. I cried every day for a month. Sophia was and still is a fighter. Sophia Ruth kept the nurses and doctors on their toes by pulling out CPAPs, feeding tubes and at one point her PICC line. She also received 5 blood transfusions. The best advice I received was when I held Sophia to make sure I was at a resting heart rate. So, I started a gratitude journal, and daily meditation before holding her. I also created a playlist called Sophia's NICU to help me get through the hard times. Sophia Ruth is truly a miracle and was constantly beating the odds by breathing on her own at 32 weeks and bottle feeding at 36 weeks. Sophia Ruth was able to go home in 104 days, just shy of one week from her due date. One doctor said “Sophia is Valedictorian of the NICU.” I would not be able to get through this experience without my faith in God, my family, friends, colleagues, my NICU mentor, dedicated doctors and nurses. She is now 2 years old, a free spirit and fearless. Our warriors need you as much as we need them. Keep the faith!" There is nothing worse than waking up in the middle of the night to a call from the nicu. Clifford had two episodes last night resulting in his sats and heart rate dropping and required emergency trach changes. Thankfully he is okay and he recovered well, thanks to the quick intervention of the medical team. Days like today are a reminder of the uphill battle we’re facing and the challenges that still lie ahead. Uffta, It’s been a tough 24 hours with little sleep. I know a lot of people ask when we’ll get to bring Clifford home, but the reality is that we have no idea. I know he’s in the right place to get the care that he needs, especially when emergencies like last night happen. You’d think this whole NICU journey would get easier, but as time goes on without an end in sight, it’s still just as tough. I always strive to stay positive and celebrate all of Cliff’s progress, but I think it’s important to also acknowledge the struggles. Some days feel impossible, but Clifford is teaching us how to be strong like him. We’re learning to cherish every moment with him, not getting caught up on how much longer we have to go. For now, Codey and I are dedicating our day to our baby boy and giving him lots of love and snuggles. One day all of this will be behind us, but until then, we will keep going until we bring our baby home.
