Good Christ… I found myself home alone for the weekend and decided I’d immerse myself in a new television experience. Boy did I pick a doozie. All I knew going into Baby Reindeer was thus: British. Dark. This usually proves to be a winning combination and this outlet was no different. It took me for a ride down the street and back. I’ve never had a stalker. I’ve never been a stalker. Outside of the standard experimental phase, I’ve never had any issues with hard drugs. A few episodes into that show though, and I found it eerily relatable. Why is that? I can only surmise that myself, and likely you, would find this relatable because at the route of this series is addiction. Addiction comes in many forms. As we know, it does not discriminate. In this case, our protagonist was addicted to.. well a few things. Dependence on tragedy. Self sabotage. A view of the world as if it were a game that played out before him. Relatable. The story shows a man who had multiple opportunities to pull himself away from everything that is destroying his livelihood. He acknowledges this. His self awareness is sharp as a knife. Despite this, he returns to the things that will surely keep him in the loop of struggle. Relatable. I won’t spoil the ending but in my opinion, it’s just about perfect. Obsession and fixation can linger long after we rid ourselves from the physical side of addiction This is one thing I strive to be more vigilant in recognizing. Sobriety alone is not a cure all. Well, not for this young man. In other news, my mother recently made me aware that through the grapevine she has discovered this little instagram page. I honestly thought my she knew about it ages ago but seemingly not. So.. hi mom. For those of you that have been asking me about the podcast and its future, it’s coming.
