Now I’m back from three weeks of training and racing in Pollença. The highlight of the trip was the U21 Europeans. A huge congratulations to Club member Maria-Luisa Coulson who just competed at Calasetta, Italy in the RS Aero World Championships. She was the only West Australian to compete and after a tight contest took home the RS Aero 6 World Women’s Masters title for 2023. A huge effort from Maria Luisa - well done! The event ran from 26 to 30 July and attracted 140 sailors from 17 countries, including 12 sailors from Australia. This is Maria-Luisa's "second sailing life" after a 25 year break. Maria Luisa and her brother Victor represented at State, National and International levels in Australia and New Zealand where the pair became the National Junior, Runner Up and National Junior Cherub Champions in addition to being the State Open Cherub Champions a number of times. Maria-Luisa also represented Australia in the Women’s 420 Worlds in Japan in 1990. She was selected as a team member for the Yachting Association of Western Australia (YAWA) State squad in 1992, and awarded the YAWA Horace Rumble prize for outstanding achievement in sailing in 1993. It was a great day to spend out on the water doing some one design dinghy RC duty. The light and a bit shifty wind made for a interesting challenge for both setting the course and for the boats to move. It was fantastic to see Lightning’s, Flying Scott’s, Lasers and Aeros on the LIMA circuit today. Laser and Aero sailing combines muscular endurance and strength to power the boat. Sailors endure many long quad and trunk isometric holds when they lean out of their boat to hike uphill. Whilst leaning out of the boat, they must control the mast and drive the boat. Environmental conditions and course setup dictate how hard the sailor needs to work. The nature of the competition schedule requires sailors to repeat their performance over many races, requiring them to be fit. A single race can last anywhere between 5-60 minutes and generally complete 3+ races in one day depending on the schedule. Programs need to maintain healthy shoulders and lower backs to ensure a sailor can remain pain-free throughout a regatta. We are open from this weekend! The easing of restrictions that come into effect on Thursday night mean that we can re-open the yard, deck and changerooms this weekend. Members will be able to access their craft and go sailing/paddling. The clubroom and kitchen will remain closed until restrictions ease further. Coffee mornings will resume 10am Sunday, but with deck seating only - we will cancel if the weather is inclement. We are now using the Service Victoria QR Code check in system. Boating (and paddling) is permitted under the current restrictions as long as it doesn't require the use of a facility. Our intrepid kayakers were out this morning in the beautiful mist. Cold but so, so beautiful. Our kayakers meet every Saturday, Sunday and Monday at 8.00am and leave the beach at 8.30am. Just a gentle reminder to our sailors re Winter Storage... It's time to start thinking about your winter maintenance. If you're not planning to compete in the winter series you should be getting organised to take your boat home. We encourage as many people as possible to remove their boats to allow more sun to the grass, and an opportunity to tidy and maintain the yard and racks. All boats remaining in the yard by mid-May will be charged for winter storage.
