Red Fox WIP Here's another I've been working on recently. It's based on a photo my wife @porter_watkins took a couple months back during an incredible experience we had with this fox. I still need to add that experience to my @fieldnotesbrand book as well. It was a really impactful moment for the two of us. Also I'm sure this is a surprise to many of you, but this is not a bird. It's a shock for all of us. Sometimes you have to sprinkle in some non-avian species. I'm admittedly nervous to finish one because SO MUCH of the image (like 90%) is going to rely on my watercolor skills, which is my least favorite part of my process. I do it because it's necessary for the work, but I know my strength lies in my drawing and not my painting. Ruffed Grouse (Bonasa umbellus) . . . “Get on my level,” I hear him gruff, down below, amidst the dazzling whites and forbidding shadows – a king, with feathers of muted browns and transcending blacks, a leader despite his pivotal loneliness. It wasn’t a demand, not really. I understood his desperate plea; I really did. After all, we were alone, human and bird as the only company. There was no chortling croak of the raven, fervent squeal of the redpoll. There was nothing. No wind to breathe life into our weary souls; no flash of fox, no brawny muscle of elk. We were all alone, save for the trees, who towered and watched and chortled as they regarded this brief concoction, this derided interaction that would never unfold again. Not like this, anyway. And here I was, nearly six feet trembling over this threatened grouse, who glared at me in no other way. Of course I understood him. Of course. Amidst a forest free of life, I watched this dignified grouse saunter back and forth, simple legs trailing, wondrous feet swaying. I watched him here, at this level, because no one else was there to watch. I let him have his moment, and I did so, gladly. . American Red Fox (Vulpes vulpes) . . . Well, it’s finally happened. The unavoidable, ineluctable, unpreventable winter has, without a shadow of doubt, arrived. Passionately, of course. After all, there is no other prairie way. The meagre, measly, muted temperatures of stifled sunlight have, at last, thankfully, surrendered into the powerful Canadian winters we prairie folk claim it out to be. I mean, before? These last few months? It’s been awfully embarrassing. Heck, we even lacked snow – yes, that cold, powdery, biting substance – until last week. But winter… wow, it’s finally here. I’m not outside writing this; I’m snug inside, warm as a bug, cradled against the isolated globe of hollering snow, where white claims the world as its own, intricate daggers whirling in a vicious frenzy, skeletal trees howling against the delicate panes of glass. A foot, then two, maybe three feet of snow, building and building against the neglected snowbanks; the forbidden snowfort we all yearn to play in. And the cold… the cold! It’s as vivid as the air we breathe, sharp and forbidding, stealing everything, our breaths and our sighs, as the cold seeps into our bones, our veins, our very minds. But, this is, quite honestly, what I’ve been waiting for, and it’s a dream come true… even if it’s a few months behind schedule. Winter, welcome home, my friend. . Downy Woodpecker (Dryobates pubescens) . . . She’s revering, absolutely revering. Her taunt, calculated, perky cry floods the desolate clearing in waves of raw wonder; announcing her alluring arrival, her ravishing residence. She makes herself known, and for that I admire her, watching as she skitters on knobbly talons across dejected deadwood, bright eyes flashing against wistful winter light. She is the bird I wish to be. Bam, bam, bam, goes her jagged beak against helpless debris; she is no joking matter — she is here for what she wants. Perhaps the greatest attribute this swift, shrewd, savvy bird holds is the way she is able to focus one thing at a time. One solid, measurable, doable duty; no more, no less. Indeed, this is what I strive to do myself. Rather than precariously juggle the countless tasks hovering absently within my head, I study her as she shows little worry, little distress. Oh, to be this bird! What a reminder it is, wandering the woods aimlessly, the smallest of signs, the slightest of reminders, of how we should carry ourselves, and, above all, how we should learn to simply, well… breathe. . American Elk (Cervus elaphus) . . . We weren’t lost; not really. We like to tell ourselves that, anyway. Still, as we ambled through treacherous snow, anxiously curled around our knees, as if afraid to be forgotten, we began to slowly register it as a slight – a very slight – possibility. The sun precariously seeped lower and lower down the facile horizon, and, as the sky turned pink with sympathy, I sighed deeply within myself. Yes, we may, absolutely, without a doubt, be, in fact, lost. It was excruciating, this silence. The thickened grunt of snow shifting, branches creaking… not a single mouse stirring. I was the first to state the elephant in the room, or rather, the elk, if you may, as the majestic creatures grazed idly around us, luminous eyes full of beguile. “Do you know where we are?” It was more of a statement, I’ll admit, one that was a slap to my father’s face, being a Reilander and all. We know our directions like the back of our hands – how could we possibly be lost? It simply wasn’t plausible. My father looked blankly into my own weary eyes, and, wordlessly, without a single sound, I knew we were, in fact, lost. Not the first time, though we will begrudgingly admit, and certainly, as long as we travel, it will not be the last. . Tree Swallow (Tachycineta bicolor) . . . It’s been a minute since I’ve posted a feathered friend. So here is one, wily and tenuous in her smooth brown plumage, the slightest kiss of colour winking in the predawn summer luminance. I still remember the day I first held one in my trembling faecal-flecked (yes, I said faecal-flecked) hands: a tree swallow, yes, a beautiful, glistening, but so very ferocious, little tree swallow; a field expedition, out in the endless swaths of prairie grasses, under the welcoming skies of blues and whites and fervent yellows. She was the first of many: corvids, raptors, teeny songbirds no bigger than the length of my finger…I’ve held them all. You’d think I’d get over it - the elation, the adrenaline, the veneration; soaking in their precious delicate feathers, their eyes of life, talons of youth. But each of these birds bring a sense of wonderment, a sense of seamless awe. No two birds hold the same personality, and I will forever admire them for that. A northern flicker is as feisty as a tottery firecracker; a blue jay is as inquisitive as an aberrant toddler. Great-horned owls make their presence known by vicious claps of jagged beaks; crows will holler to the point of insanity, rough and raw, raucous and robust. So, as I left the wildlife rehab at the end of the summer with scarred fingers and a thousand aberrations, I will forever treasure this experience, the intimacy, of holding my feathered friends, up close and personal, viewing life as it views me. . Painted Turtle (Chrysemys picta) . . . We have them here; I know we do. But, for whatever the reason, they’ve always proved elusive. Reclusive. Seclusive. The turtles, ever so hard to find. I saw one once, when I was in eighth grade, on a lousy camping trip; full of rampant teenagers and snivelling runny noses, immature whisks and exuberant laughter. The poor thing was struggling to dodge forty shoddy kids as it lumbered across the cluttered clearing. Of course they found a tiny, innocent shelled little creature fascinating. Of course. The boys were captivated; the girls, not so much. “Flip it over!” The boys crowed and crowed, their shrill voice cracks alarmingly loud in the gathering arms of dusk. I watched, in mute horror, as the boys located a stick of proper size and attempted to impel the critter onto his smooth yellow belly. This wouldn’t do, it certainly would not do. So off I went, between the snickering boys and the gossiping young girls, scooping him up (he was quite a good size) and conveying him into the beckoning shadows of the nearby forest, where he silently thanked me, with a flick of his pinstripe tail, and away he shuffled, into the whispering grasses of mystery. As I marvel at one now, nearly seven years later, I chuckle and sigh, from the peculiar memory that arises, 900 kilometres east, my doting boyfriend next to me; he is also incredibly patient, for we always stop at every creature I discover — this little guy was no different. The turtle is safe, though – he need not worry of numerous teenagers teeming – and we watch him, curiously, as he bathes with dignity, slanted eyes narrowed in the late summer sun; a tiny king he is and a tiny king he will, forever, be. . American Red Fox (Vulpes vulpes fulva) . . . We yearn for these experiences: raw, candid, gritty, intimate sensations, of which we learn, and of which we live. It is no other way; it is in our very nature. Life is complex, a collision of tests… but it is only because it’s what we humans like to do best - overcomplicate things, everything. We’ve done this for years and years, centuries, a weathered clock, ticking too slowly, too weakly; the sullen wail of complaining and complaining and complaining, buried within our very DNA. We mask and compress, rear and digress, that of our lives, our children’s future lives, as humanity stumbles, day in and day out. Even so, if we think too hard and too long, our brain will rise as a hornet’s nest, a tornado of delusory sound, and our sight on everything - the good, the bad, all of it - will fade, fade, fade into frightening oblivion, into memory, into the dust that settles on the edges of our desks. Peace. Why can’t we have peace? Love. Why can’t we find the decency within ourselves to love one another, as we were called to do? Frankly, these questions will destroy me - it will destroy all of us, who lack the true answers of our beings. The calm, cooler nights are beginning to be felt up here in Muskoka. One of my favourite times of year to camp and be outdoors; the warm, sun soaked summer-feeling days accompanied with a mixture of cooler nights and fewer bugs always puts a smile on my face. ☺️ The shift to cooler weather has me looking forward to fall trips and reflecting on this great trip in the Massasauga P.P. last fall. A tasty treat for this red fox on a mid-June morning in Algonquin Park. As I was heading back home after a morning in Algonquin, I noticed this fox gingerly trotting alongside the road before dipping into the bush. 🦊 I watched and waited as it licked it’s lips in anticipation of it’s next move. When the fox emerged, it had one idea in mind - looting the snapping turtle nest that had been dug into the side of the gravel bank. 🐢 I spent nearly an hour as the fox continually returned to the nest, digging and poking it’s head for the next egg. I’ve seen tons of looted nests over the years, but never caught the culprit in the act. 🥷 It’s experiences like these that really stir a curiosity to get out more often and see more of the wild encounters that are seasonal, unique, and surely involve a lot of luck and the right timing.
