Sometimes one clue at a crime scene can provide the key to unlocking an entire mystery. Such is the case with a single gold earring found inside a building that burned to the ground about 2,200 years ago in Catalonia, according to a report in Frontiers in Environmental Archaeology. The fact that the earring was hidden — both in a pot and in a nook inside a wall — suggests that its owners knew Hannibal’s Carthaginian army was heading their way. Because the earring was in one of the several burned buildings, experts think that the army laid waste to the entire village after its inhabitants fled. And since the piece of jewelry was first found in the 21st century suggests that its owner — and perhaps many other original villagers — never returned. 🔗 Unearth the full story of the village’s hasty evacuation and the clues left behind at the link in our bio. #Archaeology #AncientHistory #Hannibal #Carthage #RomanEmpire #HistoryMystery #AncientWarfare #SecondPunicWar #Catalonia #HistoricalFinds #ArchaeologicalDiscoveries

Alphonse Cornet, “The Taking of the Temple at Delphi by the Gauls”, 1885. Via Wikipedia: Both the historians who relate the attack on Delphi, Pausanias and Justin, say the Gauls were defeated and driven off. They were overtaken by a violent thunderstorm which made it impossible to manoeuvre or even hear their orders. The night that followed was frosty, and in the morning the Greeks attacked them from both sides. Brennus was wounded and the Gauls fell back, killing their own wounded who were unable to retreat. That night a panic fell on the camp, as the Gauls divided into factions and fought amongst themselves. #alphonsecornet #delphi #templeatdelphi #greekgods #gauls #ancientwarfare #oldgods #supernaturalintervention #historypainting #riom #museemandet @museemandet

(Defying the odds-The legendary siege of Masada and the last stand of Jewish rebels, part 2) When the Romans had finally breached the fortress, they had discovered that its 960 inhabitants had committed mass suicide, preferring death at their own hands to slavery or execution. Jewish historian Josephus claimed to have been given a full account of the siege by two women who survived by hiding inside a drain. The witnesses claimed that, because suicide was against Jewish belief, the Sicarii had drawn lots to kill each other, with the last man the only one to take his own life. Masada was the last act of the Jewish war. The Jews became scattered into areas around the Mediterranean with many thousands being sold into slavery. According to Josephus: “it [was] by the will of God, and by necessity, that [they, the Sicarrii] are to die” and that the defenders drew lots and killed each other in turn, down to the last man (as Judaism prohibits suicide). He further stated that their leader, Eleazar ben Ya’ir’s, ordered all provisions to be destroyed, to demonstrate to the Romans that they defiantly chose death over slavery. According to Shaye Cohen, archaeology shows that Josephus' account is "incomplete and inaccurate" and contradicted by the "skeletons in the cave, and the numerous separate fires". Cohen speculates that "some Jews killed themselves, some fought to the death, and some attempted to hide and escape. The Romans were in no mood to take prisoners and massacred all whom they found." Masada was last occupied during the Byzantine period, when a small church was established at the site. The church was part of a monastic settlement identified with the monastery of Marda known from hagiographical literature. This identification is generally accepted by researchers. The Aramaic common noun marda, "fortress", corresponds in meaning to the Greek name of another desert monastery of the time, Kastellion, and is used to describe that site in the vita (biography) of St Sabbas, but it is used as a proper name only for the monastery at Masada, as can be seen from the vita of St Euthymius.

Located near the Orontes River in what is now Syria, this epic showdown involved some 5,000 to 6,000 chariots and tens of thousands of soldiers clashing in a fierce day-long battle. Despite the grand scale and the intense fighting, the battle concluded ambiguously with neither side securing a decisive victory. Ramses II famously celebrated this battle as a triumph in numerous temple inscriptions back home; however, the actual outcome was more of a stalemate. The tactical maneuvers and the resulting heavy casualties led both empires to eventually sign one of the first recorded peace treaties in history, the Treaty of Kadesh, which stabilized relations and defined their spheres of influence. This battle not only showcases the military tactics and technologies of the time but also reflects the diplomatic strategies that ancient civilizations used to forge peace and ensure mutual survival. #history #ancientegyptians #ancientegypt #historyfacts #shorts #ancientwarfare #ancientstory

🇬🇧 - The conflict between Mithridates Eupator and Rome was complex and spanned several decades, known as the Mithridatic Wars. Mithridates sought to challenge Roman influence in Anatolia and expand his own kingdom. He initially achieved significant success, conquering several Roman territories and defeating Roman armies. Back to Scythia for a bit. I finished a few new images for the short story, and also, the wonderful map of the campaign by @filipsersik is now ready! 🥳 An excerpt from the short story, taken from a letter by Arynam of Pasargadae to his wife, Summer of 513 BC: "...The march grows more difficult with each passing day. I am glad to be stationed in the professional part of our army. I can not imagine how things might be among the less reliable regiments of our great expedition. And as fascinating as they are, I am glad we left the bickering Ionians behind to guard the bridge. I am sure they’d only slow us down. Every day, we march on. Always east, always deeper into the never-ending plains. In front of us, the lands of Agathyrsi, Névres, Sauromati and other names, which the farmers mention with fear in their voice. That being said, I am confident we will succeed, Freni. Our numbers are great, our supply line solid. The moment we get a chance to engage the enemy, our arrows will dispatch them quickly and with ease. Their constant retreat is a minor inconvenience, nothing more - a clear sign of their cowardice. Do not fear for us, my love. Behnam is well, and sends his regards. This campaign will end soon, I am sure of it, and we will be back before the year is over. I dream of you every night..." Two metal detectorists have discovered a bronze disc believed to be depicting Alexander the Great. Finn Ibsen and Lars Danielsen came across the object in question, a small bronze fitting measuring around an inch across, near Ringsted, Denmark. The disc has been dated by archaeologists back to 200 CE. The artifact was found at a site of a battle between two Germanic tribes that took place around 200 CE. Alexander is identified based on the wavy locks of hair and ram horns beside the ears. This depiction matches a bronze fitting found at the Illerup Adal river valley near Skanderborg, Denmark. (Second photo) The Romans considered Alexander a role model and many emperors utilized his face to show their connection and power. Alexander the Great ruled the kingdom of Macedon from 336 BCE until his death in 323 BCE at the age of 32. This area is the northeastern section of the Greek peninsula today. Alexander is known for creating a massive empire after his many military successes. His empire stretched from Greece to India. Alexander was undefeated in battle and is considered one of the greatest military commanders in history. 🇪🇸Alejandro Magno. Rey de Macedonia, hegemón de Grecia, faraón de Egipto y gran rey de Media y Persia.356-323 a.C. Pintura digital. 🇮🇹Alessandro Magno. The sacking of Ctesiphon in ancient history marked a pivotal event in the conflicts between the Roman Empire and the Sassanian Persian Empire during the third century. Ctesiphon, located near modern-day Baghdad in Iraq, was the capital of the Sassanian Empire and one of the wealthiest cities in the world at the time. In 363 AD, the Roman Emperor Julian launched a campaign to conquer the Sassanian Empire, which had been engaged in intermittent conflicts with Rome for centuries. Julian’s army besieged Ctesiphon, aiming to capture the city and weaken Sassanian power. Despite fierce resistance from Sassanian forces, Julian’s troops managed to breach the city’s defenses and entered Ctesiphon. The Romans inflicted heavy damage on the city, looting its treasures and burning significant buildings. However, Julian’s victory was short-lived, as he was fatally wounded in battle shortly after the sacking of Ctesiphon. The sacking of Ctesiphon had significant consequences for both empires. While the Roman Empire gained temporary military success and plundered Sassanian riches, the Sassanian Empire remained resilient, eventually recovering from the devastation inflicted by the Roman invasion. Furthermore, the sacking of Ctesiphon highlighted the ongoing power struggle between Rome and Persia for dominance in the Near East. The conflict between the two empires persisted for centuries, shaping the geopolitics of the region and influencing the course of history in the ancient world. Ultimately, the sacking of Ctesiphon underscored the volatile nature of ancient warfare and the enduring rivalry between the Roman and Sassanian Empires. It left a lasting impact on the political and military landscape of the Near East, serving as a reminder of the constant power struggles that defined the ancient world. #talkdiplomacy #upsc #css #SackingOfCtesiphon #AncientHistory #RomanEmpire #SassanianEmpire #Conquest #MilitaryHistory #AncientWarfare #HistoricalEvents #Battle #JulianTheApostate #Ctesiphon #Baghdad #PowerStruggle #Geopolitics #Rivalry #Warfare #Legacy #RomanSassanianWar #HistoricalImpact #AncientCivilizations #ConflictResolution #HistoricalLegacy #WarHistory #peace

⚖️ The Heaviest Infantry: The Battle of Augustodunum, 21 CE ⚔️ "A more formidable movement broke out among the Ædui, proportioned to the greater wealth of the state and the distance of the force which should repress it. Sacrovir with some armed cohorts had made himself master of Augustodunum, the capital of the tribe, with the noblest youth of #Gaul... He also distributed among the youth arms which he had had secretly manufactured. There were forty thousand, one fifth armed like our #legion; the rest had either #spear or #knife or another #weapon used in the hunt. In addition some slaves were being trained to fight as #gladiator, clad after the national fashion in a complete covering of steel. They were called "crupellarii", and though they were ill-adapted for inflicting wounds, they were impenetrable to them. At #Rome meanwhile people said that it was not only the Treveri and Ædui who had revolted, but sixty-four states of Gaul with the Germans in alliance... ....Twelve miles from Augustodunum the Romans saw before them Sacrovir and his #army in an open plain. His men in #armor he had posted in the van, his light infantry on the wings, and the half-armed in the rear... ....the #Roman cavalry threw itself on the flanks, and the infantry charged the van. On the wings there was but a brief resistance. The men in mail were somewhat of an obstacle, as the iron plates did not yield to javelins or swords; but our men, snatching up hatchets and pickaxes, hacked at their bodies and their #armour as if they were battering a wall. Some beat down the unwieldy mass with pikes and forked poles, and they were left lying on the ground, without an effort to rise, like dead men." Tacitus, The Annals 3.42 - 3.46 Why do you think the heavily-armored Crupellarii were ill-adapted for causing casualties?
