I have just realised that the photo in my last post was cut off and it looked awful! Here it is in full. Happy Friday folks! 🤩 It’s been a while but I have been very busy with exhibition prep and will be for a few months yet! I was cleaning one of my palettes yesterday and the colour combo caught my eye. There are 7 colours used in the entirety of this painting, and believe or not, each area as you see it has a different mix of all 7 paints. This is the magic of painting and I love it! For those interested, I have used burnt umber, yellow ochre deep, phthalo green, ultramarine blue, indigo, warm white and ivory black. If you're planning on stopping by for the opening of my exhibition on Monday, here are some things you may want to know beforehand: *The space in which I'm putting on this small show is an empty retail unit with an open shop front, which hopefully means you'll easily find it in Downpatrick. *There will be nibbles (GF & V also catered for) on Monday but no toilet on-site, there is one nearby. If you're staying in the town for lunch, let me know, I may have a treat for you (this is very limited, I'll show you on Monday) Due to the lack of facilities I can't be on site on a daily basis, but as it's a shop front the work will still be able to be viewed from outside. If you'd like to make an appointment to view the work close up, drop me an email at [email protected] *The exhibition is one of two halves; I will have some small works on display, as well as having one wall for drawing visitors who come into the space. The space is visible to the public and I will have to come close to you to draw your outline, if you're shy, anxious or claustrophobic, there is no obligation to take part. * @native_ivy will be there capturing some of the opening, so if you'd rather not be snapped, just let us know. *I'd really love to capture all heights of people so smaller people are encouraged to take part, as long as a person responsible for them aged over 18 can give consent for them. I have a clear Access NI certificate, undertaken for this exhibition. *I am using charcoal to trace each persons outline and by its very nature it can break and fly off in different directions. I have purchased two hairdressing capes which you will be offered, to protect your clothing, before being drawn. Finally, a big Thank You to @denvirscoachinginn for allowing me to use this space in the heart of town, and their support along with that of @downcommunityarts and @tiernabyrne.marketing I think that's everything folks, but if you have any other questions, pop them below. Charys Wilson (@charyswilson) A Point In Time - Mixed Medium Sculpture (2023) Our Artist of the Month for May 2024 is Charys Wilson. Charys Wilson was born in #Donegal and raised on the #NorthAntrim Coast. She completed a bachelor’s in fine art at @aberystwyth.university in 2015, where she majored in Printmaking. In 2022 she graduated from the MFA at @ulsteruni where she focused on creating installations. She has received numerous awards, including the Alice Berger Hammerschlag award, and exhibits nationally and internationally. Charys creates works predominantly through the medium installation and 3D works, with immersive or interactive qualities. Her work is often fuelled by the awareness of climate crisis and modern-day societies relationship with nature. ‘A Point In Time’ is part of the #ACNICollection. First shown in the @goldenthread_gallery as part of her solo show, ‘Spaces Between’, the illuminated miniature greenhouse contains real dried plants and is set against a large black background. The greenhouse model forms one point of light, set against a sea of black, like a star amidst the cosmos. This is one of the paintings which will feature in my new exhibition launching Wednesday 1 May at Artisann Gallery ‘Escape From The City’ Oil on linen 60x60cm This particular spot (called Garron Point) holds a fascination for me, it’s an idyllic landscape framed by coastal cottages and dramatic basalt cliffs, on the Eastern Irish coast of Antrim. These landscapes (swipe right) were painted by illustrious artists such as Norman Wilkinson for the great Railway posters of the 1930’s. Charlie Whisker Seed and Shadow – Acrylic on canvas (2005) Currently on loan to @thornhillderry through the ACNI Collection Schools Art Lending scheme, this earlier Collection work was purchased from the artist’s second solo show at the @solomonfineart Gallery in #Dublin. ‘Seed and Shadow’ is a still life painting which references the artist’s experiences of the conflict in Northern Ireland. Within this work we see motifs familiar to his practice, including a half-burnt match, which serves as poignant symbol to those lives lost throughout The Troubles. The work captures through use of still life, a world plunged into chaos in the aftermath of a bomb blast. Charlie Whisker, who passed in 2021, was an artist originally from Bangor in Northern Ireland, whose visual arts practice was later based in Dublin. A fascinating new exhibition has opened in the Sunburst Gallery, Ards Arts Centre; a solo exhibition of paintings and sculpture by @louisefrench.studio Louise French, a recent graduate of Fine Art Painting from the National Art School, Australia, is interested in the life-cycle of objects. This exhibition presents a series of paintings and assemblages that engage the viewer in the material qualities of the pieces, while they consider present and future artefacts. By using waste materials for assemblages, and as a source for painterly interpretations, the exhibition explores the tension between the aesthetic appeal of consumer objects which at the same time are a toxic token of our environmental crisis. By dissecting contemporary waste and considering its continued existence hundreds of years from now, ‘Part by Part’ will act as a marker of time. @brassnecktheatreco’s latest production, Project Children, is set to open on the Main Stage of the @lyricbelfast next week (April 24th – May 5th). Written by @fionnuala_kennedy and directed by Tony Devlin, the play tells the incredible story of the Project Children programme, which spanned 40 years and brought 23,000 #NorthernIreland children to the #USA during the summer month, as respite from the conflict. The programme was set up by Cork natives and then NYPD members, brothers Patric and Denis Mulcahy, who were inspired to take action, after seeing news footage of the violence back home. Beverley Healy (@beverleyhealyartist) Into the Blue – Egg tempera on board (2017) ‘Into the Blue’ is a portrait painting of the artist’s daughter, painted using egg tempera on board. As a technique, it allows the artist to capture the face in close up, as an observation of her subject, infused with colour and light. The title of the work refers to the phrase “into the blue”, suggesting a memory experienced and now gone. The artist has noted on the painting “the expression in this moment is not typical of the sitter yet captivated me with the wonder of life. I felt I needed to paint it and capture a lost moment as a forever moment”. Beverley Healy is established painter and arts facilitator based in #NorthernIreland. Beverly’s work was previously shortlisted for the Zurich Portrait Prize in 2021. This work is currently on loan to Wellington College through the Schools Art Lending Programme. Jill Quigley (@_jq76rt) Yard – Digital photograph on coloured Perspex (2017) Taken from the ‘Rural Fluorescent’ photography series, the artist is drawing on the use of high-visibility materials within rural Ireland, that have become an increasingly common aspect of the visual landscape of the countryside. This project intends to re-articulate these fluorescent and reflective materials, by exploring their use in these environments and emphasising their impact through staged and documentary images using flash photography. She notes on the artwork ‘the teapot has always provided a challenge for the potter, balancing body, handle, spout and lid to make a pleasing form’. The work is handcrafted, slab built in white earth stone and hand decorated with velvet underglaze colours and 9ct gold lustres. 🎨Springtime Workshops🎨 We have had an amazing 2 days this week visiting and holding workshops with families living in hotel accommodation around Belfast! Not only did we meet some wonderful young artists from many different countries, we were able to share dozens of our special free 'Welcome to Belfast' art packs in Arabic, Farsi and English. These pilot workshops were organised with Gail Gilmore of the Education Authority NI, Mears Housing, and supported by funding from Art Fund UK. Gail said, “It’s about introducing the families and children to the local artistic outputs and opportunities throughout NI. All children should be given access to participate in these activities. It’s a great tool to help them understand what living in Northern Ireland is like. How we talk, the history and the geography of NI. The journeys that these families have been through can be hard to even imagine - the arts can help them to start healing their trauma and to become part of the local communities. The children get quality time with their parents that they don’t necessarily get sitting in a hotel room. It’s a freedom to explore ideas and just play. The Drawing Room Project - Late night Art Thursday 4th April - Exhibition opening from 6-9pm During the global pandemic of 2020 and 2021, all of our homes became more solitary spaces. The Drawing Room Project adapted to meet the challenges of restrictions where staff and residents from Culling Tree Meadows, Arches Care Home and the NOW Group Art Club took part in workshops to create digital art with artists David Dunlop and Paul Moore. Participants were inspired by classic artists such as Picasso, Van Gogh and Monet to create their own unique art works that are now exhibited in the gallery. Visitors are invited to add their own original creations on The Drawing Wall This Project was funded by Belfast City Council through the Department for Communities Access and Inclusion Capital Programme 2020/2021. Patricia is an interdisciplinary artist, photographer, and designer based in the Philadelphia area of the United States. Patricia's photography primarily explores themes related to belonging, memory structures, and cultural identity, with a focus on the connections between the past and the present. “Routine” is part of the #ACNICollection. The image is part of a bigger series of work titled “Between then and Now” which is about the artist’s 93-year-old mother’s life, facing the challenges of aging, having moved from Ireland to live with her daughter in America. Not long now! Here's a little about the composition of The Brahmdel Variations from composer Stephen Gardner himself "It’s a real pleasure to compose a work for Cahal. I had admired his sense of colour and dynamism, and loved the way he could make the music dance at times. All this is allied to a keen sense of musicianship and an overall structural balance. When Cahal said he was performing Brahm’s Handel Variations, I thought it would be an interesting challenge to write a series of variations based on the Brahms and the Handel original. There are 6 in total – 5 short plus 1 extended Finale. Some of the variations are more overtly derivative. The 2nd variation strongly echoes the left hand of Brahm’s 8th variation, and the Finale often refers to the Handel original. The rest have echoes of Brahms."
