I had enough random pictures to throw together from today's DCTV Broadcast of the Defiance Baseball game to make a post. We had a new camera op who had never used a camera in his life and I still think he was lying to me because he was great. I'm glad we're able to give opportunities to highschoolers and others that otherwise wouldn't have the chance to get into this world. I never thought I'd be doing this, but I got lucky and had the right people come into my life to get me here. I feel like I've been working with this time for years, but it seems like that's generally how everyone feels after about 2 or 3 days. The best part is how working 9 hours will feel like 2 because I'm just having fun and using my skills the entire time. Or Will takes me to Burger King. I am reading the book Let this Radicalize You by Kelly Hayes and Mariame Kaba. They writer about this wonderful approach that I can't stop thinking about. Instead of fixating on what isn't working. Create in your mind a world that met your needs. What would that look like? Who would benefit? Who would get hurt? So I did that when it came to accessibility and fatness. Honesty, we all have something to gain from making room in society for different bodies. Only people who have something to lose are the ones making money off of fat hatred or building their sense of superiority off of self hatred. I recently adopted an auto-theoretical aspect to my work, in which narrative text has become integral to my process. Stories around items of my used clothing serve as a starting point to rework the textiles into new, abstract compositions. Combining autobiographical truths with fictionalised renderings, the narratives are based on experiences, emotions, desires and memories held in each garment. They order my thoughts and give each piece it’s own direction. The process goes back-and-forth in an evolving collaboration between garment / memory / story / artwork where each informs the other. I can honestly say I don’t know in advance where this process will take me - and that makes it (time consuming) FUN. I’m not sure whether the stories are for display or a personal part of my process.
