Ancient Horses. I loved the textures and colour palette in this abstract beginning. Really enjoyed seeing the work of @john_rainey_ at the Drawing School @eton.college. These sculptures owe something to both Surrealism and Post-Modernism, assembling elements of classical sculpture in the service of unsettling narratives which are suggestive of the unconscious. Yet, the manner in which elements are collaged gives these works a very modern sensibility. They assert a presence beneath the surface, that we need to take time to recognize what is really happening underneath the things we encounter. Rainey’s work speaks of disconnection and misunderstandings, but also depth and compatibility. In this era of immediate social media gratification, Rainey’s work has much to offer us. What's your favourite animal? For me, it's always been the magnificent Great White Shark, from when I was a child I've been truly fascinated with this awesome predator, and one that has always been on my bucket list to go see in real life. I haven't quite got there yet lol, but here's something else I've always wanted to do, paint one, as it breaches from the water against a colourful and calming South African sunset. Now you know me, I don't really draw people or animals but I always want to go out of my comfort zone, (not in the same way where you don't enter the water without a cage around you haha) ... There are twice the amount of you following me compared to three weeks ago, which is very cool and slightly daunting, so I thought I should say hi and introduce myself 👋 Please enjoy this photo of me with my print which I took in my shared garden, very aware that my neighbours were watching me bemused. Here's a little bit about me: ✨️After printmaking and animals/nature, my third love is woolly jumpers. The spotty one here is a particularly good find from Donegal. I've recently discovered Amano jumpers and am now obsessed. ✨️I am a self-taught printmaker! I started off in my kitchen with an essdee beginner set,a 30th birthday present from my aunt. I fell in love with it straight away after years of struggling to find a medium I loved. ✨️I studied History of Art at Uni because I thought it would be a better career choice (lol). I don't regret it, but I do regret spending the vast majority of my 20s barely making any art because I thought it was too late (I know 🤨). I thought I could live the corporate girl life, and I was very wrong. Making, drawing and crafting was all I did as a child, and an artist was all i aspired to be. I've had to work very hard to get here and it's not easy, but it is 1000000% worth it. ✨️Stories and narratives are absolutely key to me, I don't just make a print because it looks nice. ✨️I love yoga, climbing, hiking, camping, swimming and most outdoors things. ✨️One day I want to make a graphic novel in linoprint. ✨️I have 3 tattoos; a shell, a fish and a mountain. Consider yourself invited! On 6th May, I will be opening the doors to a new temporary space in Downpatrick (some of you will have known it as Crafty Corner, the old haberdashery store). It'll now be known as The Little Corner Gallery, and you'll find it where Market Street meets Irish Street in the town. Inside, over the month of May, I will be sharing some of my most recent works with you - those I have made around my own family tree, but more importantly, I will be inviting you to come and be a part of something... When researching my family tree I became fascinated with seeing the familiar names and places that I would discover. Some names led to dead ends, which made me think that although we may not be related by blood, we may still be linked (Ireland is after all, a very small island). I imagine that most people are familiar with the concept of 'six degrees of separation'; that all people are only six or fewer social connections from one another. So I began to imagine how my family tree would look if each person I encountered whether in passing on the street or met were to become a branch on it, and now I want to construct that tree with you! On Monday 6th & Monday 27th May between 1 & 4pm, I invite you to come to the Little Corner Gallery and be added to my 'made/interacted' family tree. Across 2.5metres of wall will hang a roll of white paper and on it, I will trace in charcoal half of your silhouette, recording with it, your name and where you consider yourself to be from (whether that is where you were born or where you live now). My hope is that each charcoal recording of every individual who visits will be like a single branch in what I hope will become a very full, drawn forest. I have trialed this idea (you can see it unfold in my last post) and I look forward to trying it on this much bigger scale. So, I hope you'll come visit The Little Corner Gallery and take part? NB. Something I learnt and something I noticed Plant Teacher Watching Death When I came back to London after Christmas, I noticed my plant wasn't looking great. 2 leaf tips were going brown. I was disappointed and didn't know what to do. One of them I decided to rip the brown part off... I instantly felt guilty, why did I do that? I questioned myself. The worry and not knowing created a fear I needed out of sight. Lesson 1 Removing the problem will not get rid of it. Instead it will be transformed into another problem. The 'problem' has an energy of its own. Let it be and face it, give it the space and attention it deserves. Do not fear not knowing, instead befriend it as life's essence is not knowing. The other leaf I left alone. I noticed it had a new lease growing from it, I worried for its future but hoped for the best. Fast forward to the present, April. The leaf is now yellow and no longer standing tall - coming to the end of life. The leaf I ripped died quicker than the one I left alone. I realised today, I have been witnessing a slow death. The transition in being as the leaf prepares itself for the inevitable. And how amazing I thought, this leaf is physically going through the transition, it knows what to do inorder to die. Lesson 2 Interfering with the leaf made it die quicker than the untouched leaf. Don't try to muddle with the natural process, let it come naturally and when it does you'll know what to do. Live in the heart, not the head. In this case a quick and heighten decision led to a quick deterioration.
