It’s APRIL, which means it’s Autism Awareness and Acceptance Month! Throughout the month, we focus on coming together in unity, and accepting and celebrating DIFFERENCES! Celebrate the accomplishments, great strengths, and contributions of individuals with autism spectrum disorder (ASD). I have seen many adults shy away from communicating with children with ASD because they notice the child is nonverbal and believe they have nothing to say. That couldn’t be farther from the truth. Nonverbal children have a lot to say!! They just communicate in different ways! Children with ASD have a limited ability to successfully communicate and interact socially. They have difficulty developing language skills and understanding social cues and what social partners say to them. Some children may not be able to communicate using speech or language, and some may have very limited speaking skills; therefore, it is OUR job to listen with more than just our ears. Nonverbal children may communicate by eye gaze, facial expressions, hand gestures, such as sign language and pointing. Here are a few behaviors to watch/listen to when communicating with a child with ASD: - Follow their eyes because they will look towards the object they desire and/or need. However, be mindful that the child may or may not make direct eye contact with you when communicating. - Read their facial expressions and body language: Although children with autism may have difficulty with expressions, some are taught to communicate by facial expressions and/or body language. - Read their hand gestures. Children may communicate by pointing or using sign language. Sia hate has been spreading in the #autismcommunity this weekend. I have a few things to say: 1. Sia Kate Isobelle Furler built an interesting career for a 45-year-old Australian woman. 2. I'm a fair weathered fan in that I do enjoy some of her hits and gave a few albums a listen. Didn't hate anything. 3. Masking is a big part of her career. She's used to hiding behind other performers and only really got to shine in the past decade of her life. 4. She doesn't understand the nuances of #autism and got defensive. The irony that a group of people with lack of understanding are mad that Sia is one of the people who misunderstands the #autismspectrum isn't lost on me. 5. Honestly, cancel culture and outrage are more annoying to me than being angry at a professional musician for not understanding a condition you already had at least one doctor misunderstand in your life. Let the woman do her thing. So many days - too many to count I have been told that I am an "angel" for [still not sure what or which] loving or caring [or both] for a child who is diagnosed on the spectrum and caring for a parent with a cognitive disease who is in a wheelchair. while in the ministry building a biznistry. I would like to humbly ask this -what would be the best life for them? In an institution? Nursing facility? And what would I do in the meantime...shop? "live my life"? forget them? That's not who I am. And I would have missed out on the enlargement of my heart, soul and love capacity that is unimaginable. No, I am grateful and every day, even those when I have to repeat one promise all day because i have been bombarded by hellish obstacles. My challenges, what I hold and handle has molded and shaped me to who I am right now. I am no angel, I am however deeply in love with my own life which is also found in two people that others might see if you don't have the lens of hope, as inconveniences. Well, I think Jesus leaving heaven and dying for me was the biggest inconvenience of all time, and He still did it.
