I have not had a panic attack since being with my husband and this one experience has changed everything. I have been battling with anxiety this morning as I am going to my sisters. It’s not going to my sister that causes me anxiety is the distance that I am away from home. Being far away from home when home is my safe place is a struggle. There is also a lot of anxiety around taking the children and everything that I need to pack and a million scenarios going through my head that I am trying to prepare for. I am sure it will all be fine and I will actually have a lovely time. Time to feel the fear and do it anyway! Parents of non-autistic children know that eventually their kids will grow up, leave home, have their own jobs/careers, have their own separate homes, live their own separate lives, have their own families, and plan for their own retirement. Parents of autistic children, teens, and adults need to plan for or help their child plan for life after the parents are no longer able to care for them or when parents eventually die. Questions that should drive future planning are “How will my son/daughter with autism support him or herself financially? Where will he/she live? Will he/she require support/assistance? What if he/she outlives his/her siblings or caretakers? What quality of life do I want my son/daughter to have? What if my son/daughter lives to a very old age? Planning for the future or the unexpected should begin as early as possible to ensure that our loved ones with autism have a secure future and a secure adult life. ⤵️ Los padres de niños no autistas saben que eventualmente sus hijos crecerán, se irán de casa, tendrán sus propios trabajos/carreras, tendrán sus propios hogares separados, vivirán sus propias vidas separadas, tendrán sus propias familias y planificarán su propia jubilación. Los padres de niños, adolescentes y adultos con autismo necesitan planificar o ayudar a su hijo/hija a planificar la vida después de que los padres ya no puedan cuidarlos o cuando los padres finalmente mueran. Las preguntas que deberían impulsar la planificación futura son: “¿Cómo se mantendrá mi hijo/hija con autismo a sí mismo financieramente? ¿Dónde vivirá? ¿Necesitará apoyo/asistencia? ¿Qué pasa si sobrevive a sus hermanos o cuidadores? ¿Qué calidad de vida quiero que tenga mi hijo/hija? ¿Qué pasa si mi hijo/hija vive hasta una edad muy vieja? 📸♥️My little gang So much is honestly changing for our family, it’s all been such a whirlwind of emotions and I can’t even begin to express how it’s making me feel. I’ve been struggling to keep up with “social media” I’ve been struggling to keep up with “friends & family” - I honestly feel there’s not enough time in the day. Morgan’s been given an amazing opportunity at a SEN nursery, until the summer holidays & that’s been tough to come to terms with, that my baby is officially growing up. Louie’s been doing amazing with his hearing aids and has been so alert visually, and making new sounds and loves listening to his big brother so much, like Louie is obsessed with Morgan 🥹 Daddy. Passed an extremely important test for his work and now has more responsibilities which we are incredibly proud of him for, 3 weeks of intense training, all paid off. I’ve finally been given the all clear from the doctor, and on the mend from a traumatic birth experience, but thankfully have had such amazing support 🥹 Im hoping to find my feet & be on a bit more… but truth be told - I’ve loved spending quality time with my family 🥹❤️ Gifted photoshoot: by the amazing @eden.slidel.photography Thankyou for capturing these moment for us, and giving us the most amazing and precious photos. As a counsellor, I organised Autism Awareness Assembly in NGFS,Alaknanda and was an essential part of it too. I felt very overwhelmed with the responses that I got after the performances by principal ma’am, teachers and students. Everybody appreciated it and felt that there is very less awareness about it and we should raise awareness and create an inclusive environment for these kids. Students enthusiastically participated and demonstrated all the required emotions for both skit and dance. I am very glad that Schools have started talking about it. The change is slow and steady but very essential and beautiful ❤️❤️ Autism, also known as Autism Spectrum Disorder or ASD is a neuro-developmental disorder that leads to communication, social and behavioural challenges. To create awareness, acceptance and appropriate supports for children with ASD every year 2nd April is celebrated as World Autism Awareness Day and month of April starting from 2nd till 30th is observed as World Autism Awareness Month. In the skit, a school setup was seen where a child played the role of autistic child and showcased his problems in the class. The skit also depicted how teachers and students helped the child who faced difficult situations in different areas of the class. The dance was based on the song Anthem of Autism which is directed by Ministry of Social Justice and Empowerment- Government of India. It depicted the emotions of a child who has autism. The dance also gave the message that more than a disability Autism is about having a pure heart and being very sensitive. It is about finding a way to survive in an overwhelming and confusing world. Life Skills. My daughter is 15 years old. She has autism, sensory processing disorder,and anxiety. Pictures of a teenage girl getting ready for school. It may not look like much to most people, but to us, it's everything. There was a time that she would wake up agitated, and she would just cry or be completely dysregulated. I had to regulate her sensory system and then do everything for her. As time went on, I put into place a good sensory routine that was built into a visual schedule. For the sensory part, I'd put lotion on her arms and legs, deep compressions on her joints, and squeezes on her arms, then we'd go out and blow bubbles. The visual schedule had pictures on velcro of each morning task to be completed, and she would rip each velcro picture off once finished and move on to the next thing. I still had to help and prompt her. Once I knew she was reading, I changed the picture schedule to a written schedule that she could read and check off once the task was completed. I noticed she started to only need me once in a while, and if I went out of order for any reason, she would correct me because she knew what to do! She is a visual learner, so that schedule helped teach her what to do. It also gave her predictability and a sense of independence. A visual schedule also lessens the need for people to talk at her. She can see what needs to be done and just execute it. I still make her breakfast and nag her out of bed. However, once she's up, she really only needs me to help with certain things. I set alarms for her, and she knows exactly what needs to be done. These are important life skills. Skills that I wasn’t sure she would ever master. ✨Challenging behavior is a common symptom of autism, and most of the time, there are appropriate replacement behaviors we can teach to functionally communicate. ✨However, there are a few behaviors to decrease that when I see them on a treatment plan or IEP, give me the ICK 🤢: 🚩1. Whining or Crying: I'm sorry, when is it ever appropriate to teach a 4 year old not to whine or cry when they don't get their way? This is a completely age-appropriate behavior. Next. 🚩2. Verbal Protesting: Although there are levels to this, protesting and telling someone "no" or "I don't want to" are vital self-advocacy skills. If your client or student is protesting - that's on you to listen! 🚩3. Stimming: Unless this is a direct barrier to learning or potentially harmful, I refuse to decrease a stimming behavior. Even if it is at a parent request. This is how your child expresses or regulates themself. If you are a parent who wants their child to have a neurodiversity-affirming IEP, these are some of the goals to get rid of. I see them on about every IEP. I also see them in many "treatment plans" from home-based providers. . What is or is not appropriate for your child is highly individual. It depends on who your child is and what is important for them at this time in development. It also depends on your parenting values and what you as a parent want to prioritize. . The bottom line is, any therapy goal needs to work for your child. It needs to consider your child's skills and the skills that are important for your child to learn. It needs to be realistic. It needs to be child-centered, i.e. it needs to serve the child. It should not be aimed at making the child more convenient or "palatable" to adults around them.
