My kids have Autism and they take the school bus. I know, I know, but before you judge, hear me out. This is not something I was comfortable with at first. I felt guilty. I felt selfish. I was worried something would happen to them. But…they love it. They get excited for it. And they may not be verbal yet, but I promise you they will absolutely protest and fight if we try to get them to do something they don’t like. And they wait for that bus to pull up and it’s the freakin’ cutest thing ever. Their first day, they both got on with no problem and looked so excited because it was something new. But they drive away and I bawled my eyes out. I felt sick watching my babies drive away with someone whom I was supposed to trust but didn’t know. I felt like crap, I felt selfish and I was uncomfortable. But I quickly realized that I can’t stress about every. single. thing. And they were HAPPY. Also, this gives me an extra hour a day and I am so grateful for that time. There’s often guilt and shame involved with taking advantage of the “perks” we as special needs parents sometimes get. This is a tough life and I don’t think anyone should feel guilty for utilizing the resources available to us. So I let that cute little bus take them to and from school. Some days I run errands and clean and some days I get my nails done and go to the mall. I know this isn’t an option for everyone and if this just isn’t for you, that’s totally ok too. I’ve heard the comments and the “I could never” remarks and I get it. Look at this little cutie. 🥰 His name is Spike and he’s a Map Turtle. We’ve put our terrarium back together and it’s pretty cool. We used to have this when the boys were little and we still had everything in the basement. Since we rescued a little painted turtle hatchling last fall, we’ve been talking about rebuilding this. We got everything back up and running. It’s really relaxing to watch. Wanted to share with you all some signs that moved us to suspect that our daughter might be on Autism Spectrum before her diagnosis. Here are some examples in no particular order: 1. Hand flapping 2. Not acknowledging her name 3. Doesn't look directly at you 4. Texture issues 5. #journeycontinues❤️ It’s been almost two months since I checked Netflix. It was actually a deliberate act especially during Ramadhan. So my husband suggested to see a film some days ago in order to relax. With the title “The Good Doctor”, I thought it was one of those we had seen but he assured me that it was a different one. He saw the film from the angle of emotion and optimism but mine was from the angle of enthusiasm and paying attention to every scene to get the message it passes. I thought to share it with a special needs mom who’s like a sister for her to ease off the stress she’s been through lately, not knowing that she’s seen it but stopped. I encouraged her to continue, she finds it very interesting too as she saw hope therein. My take away from the film is that there’s a genius in every child irrespective of the ability/disability that we may tag or label them with. It is no doubt that the journey is overwhelming but finding a way to relax and ease off stress does make a difference. Find what soothes you best as a parent or caregiver to a child with additional needs. This is a major victory for my 24 year old autistic son, Gavin. As many of you know, Gavin was diagnosed with #CVID meaning his immune system is severely compromised. Twice a week, every week, Gavin has to undergo a procedure where he infuses medication through 2 tiny needles, directly into his belly. The infusion takes a couple of hours but it gives him the ability to fight off infection and remain healthy. Anyway, Gavin has been performing this procedure on his own for many years now and while it is painful, he never complains. Today we’re celebrating a huge victory because for the very first time ever, Gavin called and ordered his medical supplies all by himself. I was unable to do it because I was sick and without my voice. This is something that we’ve been working towards but he’s always been too nervous to do. This time however, I wrote him a script and all he needed to do was read over the phone. He did a fantastic job and his supplies showed up right on time. This is so huge because as he’s preparing to move out, managing this side of his life is so important. We are knee deep in a @phoenixcomicuk fixation in our house. So you can imagine the upset with the realisation that The Boy had grown out of his favourite T-shirt. Sewing to the rescue! We filled the cushion with memory foam so the cushion has a lovely sensory feel to it. Tell us your #LivedExperience Join the conversation @muchmuchspectrum In a move prioritising inclusion, the Supreme Court of India has said that denying child-care leaves to a mother, who is taking care of a child with disabilities, would violate the constitutional duty of the State to ensure equal participation of women in the workforce. A bench comprising Chief Justice of India D Y Chandrachud and Justice J B Pardiwala said this earlier this week while hearing a petition seeking grant of child-care leave (CCL) to the petitioner, who is an assistant professor of Geography in Himachal Pradesh. Observing that the petition has raised a “serious” issue, the Supreme Court (SC) said that “Participation of women in the workforce is not a matter of privilege but a constitutional requirement of which, the State as a model employer cannot be oblivious”. The apex court also directed the state authorities to consider the plea by the petitioner, who is a mother. The court passed the ruling when the petitioner was denied leave to take care of her son, who suffers from certain genetic disorders since birth, because she had exhausted all her sanctioned leaves. State Govt asked to revise CCL Policy The state government has been directed by the Supreme Court to revise its policy on child-care leave (CCL) in order to make it consistent with the Rights of Persons with Disabilities Act, 2016. “Ultimately, the plea does entrench on areas of policy and areas of State policy must be synchronous with constitutional safeguards.
