On Thursday we took a little adventure to the park and duck pond. This is something new that we have never done before and I wasn’t too sure how Logan would go. But just as he continues to do every day, he surprised me and really seemed to enjoy himself. He loved having so much space to explore and spent most of his time walking around just taking it all in. He spent some time on the swing and joined his cousins, aunty, sister and myself for a picnic. We went for a walk and he even participated in feeding the ducks! Sometimes the only way we learn about such cases is because there’s someone who cares enough. What is Ohio doing to prevent further cases of children being adopted, abused, and tortured to death by the adults who adopt them? Since there is no formal research on this, it is hard to say how many children have been killed in their adoptive placements. However, it seems there have been a number of these cases in Ohio. I cannot imagine the pain of losing one’s child in such a horrific way after making an adoption plan, with the promise of giving the child a better life. To put one’s trust in a system, an agency, an adoption worker or attorney, who makes this promise to them. #childabusepreventionmonth
Truth is, one of the best things to happen for Ade academically, was his enrollment at Young Explorers. This school has afforded him exposure to a variety of subjects and activities. One of these is Cooking and Ade embraces it wholeheartedly. The day he told me he wanted to be a Chef, I knew I had work to do! It turns out that Mama Mia is the perfect place for him to learn his craft. It’s the first place he ate gluten-free pizza and the first place he held a meal with his fingers!!! In his early days, he was cool with eating the pizza, but not touching it! Surrounded by a team who know and love him and assisted by his teacher Shanice, Ade is totally enjoying his volunteer stint at Mama Mia. I graduated from UC Berkeley in 2020. I had a couple-year long career in case management, harm reduction, therapy, and social work, which was rewarding but drove me into the ground and didn’t give me the time to properly care for myself. I was suffering from autistic burnout (pre-diagnosis) and the problem was worsened by my frustration with my burnout symptoms impacting my ability to “function like normal”. After taking a few months off to move back home and focus on my health, I was diagnosed (at 25 years old) with Autism. My diagnosis made me kinder on myself and more understanding of my challenges in light of the new diagnosis, and after learning to work with (as opposed to against) my brain I am now looking into doing Harm Reduction work (in direct service and policy) and potentially pursuing a PhD in Public Policy. I still don’t “function like normal”, but who the hell wants ‘normal’ anyway ! In this episode, Vas shares about their experiences with substance use, ways society can provide support and direction in harm reduction. And what a great opportunity to practice vulnerability with the team! Thank you Jenn!! Our team was reminded that movement is not just about longetiviety and getting stronger. WE’RE HUMAN. Movement holds emotions. We do not just run for heart health, but for joy. We do not just lift for physical strength but maybe to release rage. As a counsellor, I organised Autism Awareness Assembly in NGFS,Alaknanda and was an essential part of it too. I felt very overwhelmed with the responses that I got after the performances by principal ma’am, teachers and students. Everybody appreciated it and felt that there is very less awareness about it and we should raise awareness and create an inclusive environment for these kids. Students enthusiastically participated and demonstrated all the required emotions for both skit and dance. I am very glad that Schools have started talking about it. The change is slow and steady but very essential and beautiful ❤️❤️ Autism, also known as Autism Spectrum Disorder or ASD is a neuro-developmental disorder that leads to communication, social and behavioural challenges. To create awareness, acceptance and appropriate supports for children with ASD every year 2nd April is celebrated as World Autism Awareness Day and month of April starting from 2nd till 30th is observed as World Autism Awareness Month. In the skit, a school setup was seen where a child played the role of autistic child and showcased his problems in the class. The skit also depicted how teachers and students helped the child who faced difficult situations in different areas of the class. The dance was based on the song Anthem of Autism which is directed by Ministry of Social Justice and Empowerment- Government of India. It depicted the emotions of a child who has autism. The dance also gave the message that more than a disability Autism is about having a pure heart and being very sensitive. It is about finding a way to survive in an overwhelming and confusing world. I talk so much on here about autism and my lived experience as a late diagnosed autistic person however let’s talk about what actually is autism? (and a little bit of what it isn’t!) ♾️ Autism is a neurotype / developmental disorder, so its a brain type. Therefore if you’re autistic you are infact born autistic, autism can’t be developed later on in life. Since autism is a neurotype that also means it’s a life long disability, there is no cure (nor should there be). Some things autism involves: 👉🏻Repetitive & retrictive behaviour 👉🏻Struggles with routine 👉🏻Hyper & hypo sensitivity to sensory aspects of the environment 👉🏻Meltdowns & shutdowns 👉🏻Highly focused interests & hobbies 👉🏻Social communication & interaction challenges What autism isn’t: ❌ A linear spectrum from the “least” to the “most” autistic person ever. Deen! He understood the role of being a little big brother to Adam from the day he was born . Sometimes I forget that even though he is so mature for his age and my right hand , he is still very young and has to handle lots of complexities of Adam’s profound autism . Together we are the heroes who work tirelessly and face challenges people can not even imagine. But we also find time to connect and recharge so we can show up better and stronger for our Adam. He wants to travel the world and anytime we take a trip without Adam , he always talks about how nice it would’ve been if Adam was with us and how hard it is to not be able to do so many things together as a family due to his challenges. But we always focus on the things we can do together as a family and not on our limitations . Just had a lovely bonding spring break trip with Deen to Florida! Being neurotypical growing up with a neurodiverse sibling is a unique experience which can be both positive and negative at times . Autism Service Dog History Part I: Jim Sinclair’s SSigDOGs If you have spent any time in autism advocacy spaces, you may be familiar with Jim Sinclair’s essays on Person First vs. Identity First language or “Don’t Mourn for Us”, addressed to the parents of autistic children. Lesser known is that they are the first person on record to have trained an autism service dog. Inspired by the guide dog schools established after WWI and signal dogs (i.e. hearing dogs) in the 70s, Sinclair pioneered the concept of Sensory-Social Signal Dogs (SSigDOGs) in the late 80s before service dogs were even recognized in the Americans with Disabilities Act (1990). The SSigDOG we have the most information about is Isosceles, a black German Shepherd that performed tasks very similar to Orbit’s with some extra environmental and social awareness thrown in. Isosceles helped orient Jim to both social & physical aspects of his environment by navigating around obstacles and signaling familiar sounds & people. Sinclair trained at least 3 more personal service dogs, helped numerous owner-trainers, and may have inspired the first accredited autism assistance dog program (more on that later). Back in the 90s, Sinclair anticipated the needs of both children and adults with autism, going on to describe many different tasks that can benefit individuals who struggle with sensory processing, orientation, social situations, and routines. “In the case of a young child or a dependent older person, a dog can alert caregivers to the occurrence of problems so the caregivers can intervene. In the case of a more independent person, a dog can help the person identify which features of a confusing environment need to be attended to.” “What do SsigDOGs do?” was published in 1990 and “All About SSigDOGs which details their history back to the 1980s was published in 1998. Why did it take so long for autism service dogs to catch on, and why is it still so hard to find someone willing to train one for an adult?
