When my friend @jamielinbrown asked me today “what has been one of the hardest parts about starting @channingsjoy” I knew my answer deep down, but it took me saying it out loud to really hit me. Let me explain. Creating our nonprofit has been one of the best things I’ve ever done. It has given me a sense of purpose on our autism journey and in life. It has made me feel like I can actually do something to help others and to turn grief into joy as much and as often as possible. But, in turn, it has also taken me away from my kids at times and forced me to lean on others in our family to really help me to be able to do the foundation AND care for my kids. Some people say, “how do you do it all?” And the truth is, I don’t. I rely on help from my family and while I wish so badly I could be the mom that does do it all, I don’t and I can’t. Because my family has stepped in to help me be able to do the foundation or go to events, I feel like Channing has learned to go to different family members rather than just me as “his person.” Yes, I do take him to school every day and pick him up every day, but while I used to be the only one around most of the time, that’s not the case any more. I just couldn’t do it by myself. Everyone in our immediate family now has a tight bond with Channing and while I LOVE it and could not survive without their help, it is clear for me to see he no longer just relies on me. It’s both beautiful and heartbreaking for me as a mom. I loved being his one and only, but truly, it’s best for him and for me if there are multiple people who can be “his” and gosh, how blessed is he to have that? I am so incredibly thankful my family has stepped in to help make my dreams for this foundation a reality. Selfishly, I want to always be his person, but truly, he’s too amazing for me to keep all to myself. And if I can’t forever be his one “person” I know I can and will always be his constant. 🩵🤟🏼

Besef / geleerd Gisteren liep ik weer een flink stuk door de stad. 15 kilometer langs allerhande activiteiten voor koningsdag. Heerlijk vond ik het. Een duidelijk doel van de dag. Tijdens de toch heb ik ook veel kunnen nadenken. Over alles wat me bezig houdt. De minder leuke dingen, maar ook de vooruitgang die ik heb geboekt in zelfkennis de afgelopen jaren. Lopend over het grote park in Tilburg zag ik alle mensen daar zitten. Op het gras, met een drankje en hapje. Voor hen natuurlijk erg gezellig en volgens allerhande maatschappelijke standaarden natuurlijk ook. En ik besefte me dat ik dat altijd al vervelend heb gevonden en dus ook niet meer doe. Het "ergens zijn" en dat ergens zijn is het dan ook. Dat is het doel. Nee dank je. Alleen een terrasje kan ik dan nog wel waarderen. Een comfortabele stoel en iemand die drinken en eten komt brengen. Op de een of andere manier kan ik dat wat langer volhouden. Ik ben wel blij met dit besef. Hierdoor kan ik vervelende situaties beter mijden. I’ve been sick for about 4 days now. While being sick I’ve been caring for 2 of my kids who are also sick, our duck who is sick as well, & working (on top of everything else). I decided to order some breakfast bc I don’t have the energy to cook this morning. So I jumped on Postmates & found a a place called Tacos N More Mexican Grill. I ordered our meals but they didn’t have the option to add more bacon. Two of my kiddos have autism & LOVE bacon so I called the restaurant to ask if I could pay to add more on. I explained that my kids have autism & just really love bacon. The girl who answered the phone was the sweetest & immediately stated that she understood this was a safe food for my kids. It’s so rare to talk to someone who gets it. I mean, this girl understood exactly what I was talking about & even stated she had experience working with autistic children. The conversation made my morning & when the food arrived that smile I had from chatting with her turned into a few years 🥲 I didn’t ask her name but she will always be one of the rare people who truly “gets it” & I really needed that today 🥹 And for all my fellow parents out there who may be feeling like you’re struggling to get through the day to day…I know the criticism & judgment you’re facing. Sebastian has autism and came to us at the start of his search for long term employment. Not knowing anything about resumes or interviewing, he relied on his employU employment specialists Kellie and Pharaoh to teach him. Together, they created a resume for Sebastian and practiced interview skills. From there he was able to find and complete a paid on the job training at Walgreens. After Walgreens, Sebastian was able to find a position at Arby's taking orders and keeping the dining area clean. With the help of Kellie and Pharaoh, he learned how to balance all of his responsibilities. Now that he has found long term employment Sebastian wants to set his sights higher. He wants to look for an even better job with higher pay using the resume and interview skills he now has. Gaining skills to further employment dreams is our goal for all our clients. This was a research paper coming out of La Trobe in Melbourne, looking at particularly South Asian experiences of raising an autistic child in Australia. I love that we're doing research in understanding experiences, because so many of us feel like there are supports in place, without seeing who is still not yet able to access the supports. Who doesn't feel safe to ask. Who doesn't feel safe to come. Who doesn't feel safe, because sometimes the world has made them feel like they can't or shouldn't. Still, participants felt rooted in positive hope for the future and invested in their children. Some reported doing hour long trips to therapy and back. They felt therapy was worth it, once they found professionals who they could trust, to be open and collaborative with and included them in the therapy process. I guess this paper was a good wake up call for me. There are members who still feel alone, like they have to do it all by themselves, who aren't yet connected. Remember that feeling? One of our own adventurers, J, is here to spill the beans on their epic journey! "While many reviews are from parents for their participant children, from my own perspective participating in the service it has been great. The service scales for people of all age groups, and groups them appropriately. Also, initially, the group I joined for D&D wasn't the best fit for me, and it made me unsure to continue. However, the admin organiser suggested that I give it another term and she would find me a group that would fit better and I have since had so much fun having a regular group to play with (even if sometimes my crazy plans have gotten us in trouble heh). Further when I haven't been doing well and either missed the session, or stepped away without saying anything, the admins will call just to check that everything is alright, which creates a feeling of caring from the team. Overall it has been a very positive experience and I can't wait for this next term to start! So, if you're on the fence about joining us for Term 2, let J's story be your guide. Why Cocomelon Can Lead to Sensory Overload in Kids with ADHD and AUTISM ? Cocomelon and similar shows are often fast-paced, brightly colored, and filled with rapid transitions between scenes and music. For kids with ADHD and AUTISM, this can be overwhelming because their brains process information differently. Firstly, children with ADHD and AUTISM may struggle to filter out irrelevant stimuli, so the constant barrage of colors, sounds, and movements in shows like Cocomelon can be too much for them to handle. This sensory overload can make it difficult for them to focus or concentrate on what's happening. Yesterday we took William swimming for the 1st time since our holiday last year. We were unsure how he would be in a busy pool. Well, I didn't have to worry as he loved every minute of it. This is such a positive step. It was only 4 years ago that he wouldn't get in the bath, he came along so much, and his confidence has grown. Now, to look for swimming lessons as he scares me, he just wanted to be out with his sister in the deeper end 🙈 One piece of advice for anyone who was thinking of taking your child swimming was to put bright swimming shorts or costume on. My name is Kelen; I am Brazilian and the proud mother of a super special man. My son was diagnosed with autism when he was four years old. It was a shock for our family, but my husband and I decided to fight against all the odds. We agreed that our son would be a winner and would succeed in everything that he wanted to do. We moved from one city to another to enroll him in a school that could support him in all his needs. We research food and alternative treatments. We invested in his academics because of the excellent teachers who crossed his path. He achieved all possible academic awards in elementary, middle, and high school. Luego encontramos el programa Sonrise y nos demostraron exactamente lo contrario. Todos estos comportamientos “raros” de nuestro hijo eran nuestras ventanas a su mundo, acompañarlo en sus intereses nuestra forma de demostrarle nuestra aceptación = amor, y al mismo tiempo el puente para invitarlo a participar de nuestros intereses y asi poder enseñarle respetando sus tiempos y sus espacios. When we started our path in autism they explained to us that all of our son’s self-stimulation behaviors prevented him from learning and therefore we had to interrupt them so that he could spend his time learning useful things (more or less it was like this). Then we found the Smile program and they showed us exactly the opposite. Sometimes, tears are the only words your heart can speak. From personal experience, being an autism mom can be an emotional rollercoaster. The joys are immense, the challenges are real, and the love is boundless. But sometimes, the weight of it all can feel overwhelming, leaving us speechless and reaching for tissues instead of words. If you’re a fellow mom raising a neurodivergent child, you know what I mean. Those moments when the tears just flow, carrying with them a mix of emotions: frustration, exhaustion, worry, love, and everything in between. It’s okay to cry, mama. It’s okay to let the tears wash away the stress and release the pent-up emotions. Crying isn’t a sign of weakness; it’s a sign of the strength it takes to navigate the highs and lows of this journey. It’s your body’s way of communicating when words fail to capture the depth of what you’re feeling. It’s a release, a way to process the complexities of this journey. When our children face challenges or when the weight of our responsibilities feels overwhelming, tears become our silent companions, speaking volumes when words fail.
