Our little man is still battling the seizures that caused his fall and concussion a few weeks ago. On Wednesday morning, he had pretty constant seizures that continued despite giving his rescue medication so we took him to ED. He was admitted overnight and given more rescue meds and increased doses of his regular meds. Little Miss A kept him company; swipe to the last pic for a flashback of Miss E doing the same thing at the same age after a surgery. His seizures have reduced but continued to be frequent (about 1 every ten minutes). Yesterday he had an EEG to learn more about what's going on. He had been awake most of the night before and having a lot of seizures, so the EEG was able to capture that activity. We were really sad to learn that he was having seizures 30% of the time in the EEG, and that the seizures are preventing him from sleeping and likely happening in his sleep as well. Mondays are Spelling Days: What will you miss about Middle School? NOTHING; SOMETIMES TEASED… My biggest nightmare has come true. We started with this question: What will you miss about middle school? Each student in 8th Grade was asked this question so their answers can be included in the slideshow at graduation. Gabe very rigorously spelled NOTHING. I reminded him of some positive memories that I’m aware of like being on Cross Country and the weight room with Mr. Gardiner. Gabe spelled RUNNING and indicated that he meant running in the halls and as a sport. Gabe Spelled: LIKE MANY STUDENTS I WIlLL MISS MY GOOD CHILDHOOD At this point I had a question because I wasn’t sure if he was spelling that he likes many students and he will miss them along with his good childhood. In terms of healing trauma, stress and upset, 'EMDR' comes up a lot. But what is it? EMDR stands for 'Eye movement desensitization and reprocessing'. It is a range of eye movements, or bi-lateral hands or body movements that stimulate both sides of the body and brain. It facilitates the processing of uncomfortable memories, thoughts or bodily feelings whilst also enhancing calm and resourcing techniques. In terms of healing old, stuck trauma, 'somatic healing' comes up a lot. But what is it? Somatic work is the acknowledgement of internal sensations in the body. Somatic/body work is essential for healing in order to allow the non-verbal parts of the brain to release the stuck emotion. And I'm looking into trying RPM or S2C to see if it will help with my apraxia and unreliable speech so a friend made me some stencil letterboards! I really like them. Jack has been working extra hard over the past few months to learn communication systems and trying to find the best fit for him. There is so much to learn and consider when choosing an AAC device and platform. We are kinda learning it the hard way, we haven’t found the initial device to be a great fit for him… we are trialing another device now with the help of his SLP! However, he received the first device in the fall and can only receive a device every 5 years so we’re stuck with it and might have to find alternative ways to use/get the other system. But we want him to be successful! Things we want for Jack to incorporate (eventually): — eye gaze capability — a system he can learn to activate on his own — ease of navigating through words — ability to have a big vocabulary that is easy to learn and access — games are a plus! We would LOVE TO HEAR YOUR RECOMMENDATIONS, what system & device has worked for your non-verbal kiddo. Thank you to @speechfromhome for advocating so hard for our guy to find him the best fit. The words on this list were complied during a study undertaken by Marvin, Beukelman, and Bilyeu. The words were the most frequently occurring words of the preschool children that partook in the study. I am working my way down the list that is in alphabetical order. Day 28 of #autismacceptancemonth 🧩 throwback to when Beau was only just one!! He went through a stage of always wanting to see and stroke the cats (for those of you who don’t know we have 4 so there are plenty to choose from!!) we had to watch him all the time around them as of course, babies don’t understand cat boundaries. We are lucky that they (well, 3 out of 4) are very used to being handled and fussed so they are quite tolerant. This was, however, another brief stage. He totally lost interest in them again, it’s like they aren’t even there (along with poor Rolo, who he’s always ignored 😂). Tonight, however, he saw two of them and said “miaow” twice. This is brilliant progress for him, to see something and make the noise associated with that. He got the biggest clap (which, as always, he was totally nonplussed by!) #love #joy #miaow #happyboy #nonverbal #babybeaubearburns #differentnotless💙

The nonspeaking community continues to be very toxic towards the intellectually disabled community. And continues to throw them under the bus in many cases. I’ve had a discussion with a nonspeaking person, and they said how they use the term nonspeaking because they don’t want to be associated with intellectually disabled people. And how separating yourself from intellectually disabled people isn’t bad. That sealed the cake for me, and I’ve been using nonverbal and reclaiming it in a way. If you want to be separated from me then fine. But then don’t come crying to me and saying why I should use the term nonspeaking when a HUGE part of the nonspeaking community hates intellectually disabled people and wants to be separated from them. Intellectually disabled people who can’t speak or can speak very little are here. We use the terms we want to use. Deswegen: Obacht auf deutliche Signale der Mitmenschen. 🚪🐯 Wofür wir oft blind sind, sind die kleinen aber beständigen Veränderungen. Sie zeigen aber an, wie es um unsere Beziehung zu anderen steht. Zeigen Kollegen, PartnerIn und Kinder immer noch so viel Freude und Nähebedürfnis wie früher? 👫📉 Oder hat das abgenommen. Vielleicht aber ist jetzt auch alles viel besser.
