As #AutismAwarenessMonth is coming to an end, I can’t help but to think about how different this one looks from the ones prior. Micah, my little brother, and my favorite person ever is graduating May 18th!! 🥺😭 If you’ve been following me for a while, then you know that this still feels unreal 😅 my baby isn’t a baby anymore!! Growing up with a sibling that has been special needs has had its ups and downs, but I can’t imagine life without my ray of sunshine. 💫 And while I feel like this year has been tough being active with @micahswalkforautism and the work of our organization, it is just getting started. 🫶🏾 A few people have asked me what’s next for Micah? Well, we all know his love for arts & crafts, animals (preferably at the zoo) and his extreme organization skills. He also loves music and being the center of attention (sometimes😂) I’m excited to share that Micah has a job that he will start after having his summer off 🥹🫶🏾 he also has a résumé that lists all of his work done over the years such as making salt and pepper shakers, pencil holders, and the list goes on. These programs were all curated with the help of @micahswalkforautism , the state of Mississippi and Germantown High School. Also, @micahswalkforautism is about to close on its first facility! It includes an office, gym, auditorium, and cafeteria. Once the facility is open, we plan to offer more jobs, programs, and resources similar to what Micah has received over the years. I’m so so proud 🙏🏾 Thank you God!

I graduated from UC Berkeley in 2020. I had a couple-year long career in case management, harm reduction, therapy, and social work, which was rewarding but drove me into the ground and didn’t give me the time to properly care for myself. I was suffering from autistic burnout (pre-diagnosis) and the problem was worsened by my frustration with my burnout symptoms impacting my ability to “function like normal”. After taking a few months off to move back home and focus on my health, I was diagnosed (at 25 years old) with Autism. My diagnosis made me kinder on myself and more understanding of my challenges in light of the new diagnosis, and after learning to work with (as opposed to against) my brain I am now looking into doing Harm Reduction work (in direct service and policy) and potentially pursuing a PhD in Public Policy. I still don’t “function like normal”, but who the hell wants ‘normal’ anyway ! In this episode, Vas shares about their experiences with substance use, ways society can provide support and direction in harm reduction. As a counsellor, I organised Autism Awareness Assembly in NGFS,Alaknanda and was an essential part of it too. I felt very overwhelmed with the responses that I got after the performances by principal ma’am, teachers and students. Everybody appreciated it and felt that there is very less awareness about it and we should raise awareness and create an inclusive environment for these kids. Students enthusiastically participated and demonstrated all the required emotions for both skit and dance. I am very glad that Schools have started talking about it. The change is slow and steady but very essential and beautiful ❤️❤️ Autism, also known as Autism Spectrum Disorder or ASD is a neuro-developmental disorder that leads to communication, social and behavioural challenges. To create awareness, acceptance and appropriate supports for children with ASD every year 2nd April is celebrated as World Autism Awareness Day and month of April starting from 2nd till 30th is observed as World Autism Awareness Month. In the skit, a school setup was seen where a child played the role of autistic child and showcased his problems in the class. The skit also depicted how teachers and students helped the child who faced difficult situations in different areas of the class. The dance was based on the song Anthem of Autism which is directed by Ministry of Social Justice and Empowerment- Government of India. It depicted the emotions of a child who has autism. The dance also gave the message that more than a disability Autism is about having a pure heart and being very sensitive. It is about finding a way to survive in an overwhelming and confusing world. Life Skills. My daughter is 15 years old. She has autism, sensory processing disorder,and anxiety. Pictures of a teenage girl getting ready for school. It may not look like much to most people, but to us, it's everything. There was a time that she would wake up agitated, and she would just cry or be completely dysregulated. I had to regulate her sensory system and then do everything for her. As time went on, I put into place a good sensory routine that was built into a visual schedule. For the sensory part, I'd put lotion on her arms and legs, deep compressions on her joints, and squeezes on her arms, then we'd go out and blow bubbles. The visual schedule had pictures on velcro of each morning task to be completed, and she would rip each velcro picture off once finished and move on to the next thing. I still had to help and prompt her. Once I knew she was reading, I changed the picture schedule to a written schedule that she could read and check off once the task was completed. I noticed she started to only need me once in a while, and if I went out of order for any reason, she would correct me because she knew what to do! She is a visual learner, so that schedule helped teach her what to do. It also gave her predictability and a sense of independence. A visual schedule also lessens the need for people to talk at her. She can see what needs to be done and just execute it. I still make her breakfast and nag her out of bed. However, once she's up, she really only needs me to help with certain things. I set alarms for her, and she knows exactly what needs to be done. These are important life skills. Skills that I wasn’t sure she would ever master. Growing up with undiagnosed autism was hard. I knew I was different. I never fit in with the others. Things that seemed easy for others were hard for me. Every day was a challenge & I was always unprepared. I struggled to make friends & rarely maintained friendships I did make. I could never grasp social ques or standards. I was irritable, emotional & overwhelmed. I was labeled as a difficult, defiant child. I was told to try harder when I was already trying as hard as I could. I was told to behave when I behaved the only way I knew how. I was constantly being reminded that I was not the same as my peers. I was bullied. I came home crying because no one wanted to be my friend. Teachers belittled me, adults scolded me & peers isolated me. So, I belittled myself, I scolded myself, & I isolated myself. I began to believe that I was broken, that I didn’t deserve to be loved, & that I was the problem. I allowed the ghostly version of myself that others created to haunt me for the first 25 years of my life. I became a timid, meek shell of the person I was created to be. After a complete emotional breakdown in my mid-20s, I decided to set myself free of the weight I was carrying. This is when I began to suspect that I was autistic. I allowed myself to heal, gave myself grace, forgave those who hurt me & forgave myself. MY STORY is why autism acceptance is so important. Late diagnosed autistics grow up hating themselves because there is little understanding of autism. We & others are aware that we are different. It is not enough to just be aware of someone’s differences, we need others to accept that we are different & understand why to create a safer environment for autistic children and adults. I am not blaming those around me for growing up undiagnosed. Just like myself, they were unequipped with the knowledge needed to make me feel accepted.
