My third book of 2024 is Into the Wild by Jon Krakauer. I’ve vaguely heard the story of Chris McCandless before, and I’ve always thought he was sort of naive and reckless. This book takes a closer look and dares the reader to reconsider: what if Chris almost got it right? He wasn’t overly skilled in surviving the wilderness…but he also wasn’t NOT skilled. He survived entirely on his own for a full 16 weeks, that’s not nothing. I would’ve given this 3 stars but there’s a scene at the end that made me ALMOST weepy (they almost got me, and I’m difficult to get, even coaching myself, “it’s ok to cry, it’s ok to cry!”) so it got bumped up a star. 4 stars. Also, this year, I’ve been tracking actual calendar days that events in my books take place on, hoping to get all 366 days, and thanks to Chris’s journal, I was able to track 53 days from this book alone! #intothewild #jonkrakauer #krakauer #chrismccandless #bus142 #bookstagram #tragedy

NEW EPISODE The More You Look Podcast 08: Bus 142 Conservators Come North As an official repository for the State of Alaska, the UA Museum of the North took possession of the Stampede Trail Bus, or Bus 142 in the fall of 2020. In 2022 the museum contracted with the team at B.R. Howard Conservators to assess and conserve Bus 142. That conservation was begun and completed in the spring of 2023 within the UAF Engineering Department’s high bay. During the work, the museum spoke with members of the B.R. Howard team about the complicated process of balancing the preservation of existing bus elements while repairing and restoring lost components—in aid of both the safety of future visitors to the bus and the long-term care of the bus and associated collections. The bus is now in a building at the University of Alaska in Fairbanks where they are preparing it for placement in the Museum of the North in Fairbanks. Sporo podejść mnie kosztowało przeczytanie "Wszytko za życie" Krakauera. W końcu jakoś się wciągnęłam, bo i autor nieźle pisze, ale chyba nie jest to po prostu do końca mój typ literatury - taka literatura gdybania. Nikt nic nie wie na pewno, a sporo miejsca zajmują opisy domniemanych przeżyć i odczuć człowieka, którego już nie ma i w którym nie wiadomo co się działo. Raz już miałam styczność z podobną książką ("Sztorm doskonały" Jungera) i dokładnie to sama maniera opisów mnie uwierała. Dodatkowo ja w przeciwieństwie do ewidentnie sympatyzującego z bohaterem autora totalnie nie umiem sie z nim polubić. Za daleko mi już chyba do 20-letniej lekkomyślności i buntu (możliwe że nawet gdy miałam 20 lat było mi za daleko). Nie kupiła mnie ta pozycja. Nie umiem uchwycić skąd fenomen tej historii. 📅 18 de agosto de 1992 fallece a sus 24 años el nómada Chrisropher McCandless. El acta de defunción dice que falleció por inanición, la forma más extrema de malnutrición, aunque estudios posteriores fueron descubriendo otros factores que lo llevaron a un envenenamiento prolongado que le provocó su deceso. En pruebas posteriores en el cuerpo se encontraron restos de ODAP que estaban presentes en semillas de Hedysarum alpinum y que McCandless habia consumido. Tras abandonar cualquier rastro de civilización, el joven ermitaño autoproclamado Alexander Supertramp -supervagabundo- realizó un viaje de casi dos años por todo EEUU, desde Dakota del Sur a Arizona, pasó por California e incluso cruzó de forma clandestina la frontera de México. Terminó estableciéndose en los bosques de Alaska de la ciudad de Fairbanks, cerca del Parque Nacional Denali donde vivió sus ultimos meses dentro de un autobús abandonado hasta fallecer un día como hoy, luego de ser cercado por la crecida del río Teklanika. 📍El 12 de agosto Christopher había escrito sus últimas palabras en su diario: "He tenido una vida feliz y doy gracias al Señor. Adiós, bendiciones a todos". Su cuerpo fue encontrado por cazadores de animales el 6 de Septiembre dentro de su saco de dormir en estado de descomposición y pesando apenas 30 kilos. 📍 Quizá la historia les resulte familiar, en 1996 Jon Krakauer lanzó el libro Into The Wild, y en 2007, de forma homónima Sean Penn la hizo película.
