Once a year, we remove the cars from our street for our annual Street Party and almost as soon as they are gone, the children take over the street and make it their own. By the end of the day, parents are no longer worried about exactly where their children are because they know that they are in a safe place and that there will always be someone to keep an eye on them. And every year, people say "Wouldn't it be great if we could do this more often?" The children look forward to this day almost as much as they look forward to Christmas morning. They thrive in that brief newfound independence and in spending time with and getting to know the other children in the street. And for the adults too, the event is an important part of what keeps us together as a community - not just the day itself, but the communal effort that goes in to organising and preparing for the event. It all helps to build a cohesive community spirit that I feel very fortunate to be a part of. Bicycling has increased by almost 400% since 2010. Walking and public transport are still the most popular ways to get around; walking stands for 53,3 % of all of journeys and public transport stands for 30 %. SCDOT has plans to rehab the Church Street Bridge which cuts through downtown Greenville (https://churchstbridgerehab.com/). They are implementing pedestrian improvements into the project, wider sidewalks, better lighting, and a new stairway to McBee Street, but imagine how much better it would be to eliminate car traffic entirely. The Church Street bridge, which is currently a scar on Greenville’s downtown, could be a vibrant urban park like the High Line in Manhattan. Instead of an outdated urban freeway, it could be a jewel of the city with sweeping views of our beautiful downtown.
Sustainable plastic-free zerowaste shopping in the city. I live 14km away from the zero waste shop. Unfortunately this is the closest one. There is a market next to our house so the vegetables and fruits are easy to get, but pasta and spices are not. Going to see a doctor in the middle of the city. We chose to go by bike. A big part of that is sustainability. Another part is speed. 35km in this city in the morning rush hour is just faster and more convenient. We could stop after the doctor for a nice cake then cycle to the park and eat it on a sunny bench without worrying about parking places and pollution. So we did it. (Pictures are not included, I deliberately do not upload any about the kid :) ). But! And this is a very big but. Until there is no safe infrastructure for cycling people will not start to cycle. And there is no complete net around the city, and even what we have is often dangerous. People on bikes feel like they are secondary citizens... On one of the main roads in the city, careless drivers use the bike lane as a secondary parking lane. We had to overtake illegally parking cars like 30 times today in heavy traffic, where cars are speeding way over the legal limits (which are too high in the first place). Not fun at all. Especially with a kid. One of many things I love about casual cycling is the connection. You're part of your surroundings and you experience the environment, the weather - and often the company of people you bump into. It was a nice sunny day so I stopped to take a photo of my bike leaning against the bridge. Next thing I know, I'm chatting with three people enjoying a sunny walk and the older gentleman offers to take a photo for me (then he proceeds to impress me with his knowledge of Polish greetings). I'm not exactly a very sociable person but that felt really nice. Then I continued to Rutherglen in hope of getting my bike serviced and I bump into the very same dude I chatted with for miles riding along the banks of Loch Lomond last summer, plus the rest of the friendly-as-always crew at Bike Town. On my super pleasant ride back home, I couldn't help but recall my experiences of driving in the city. The anger and the general hatred of everything and everyone spilling way beyond just the frustrating drives. The mind blowing slowness of it, despite Glasgow already being painfully carved up to allow better flow of cars. The cost, the fumes, the traffic, the anger, the drama of parking, the deterioration of my health. You can deal with some of that (for example, drive a lot and be very fit anyway) but there's no way you'd deal with all of it. City #3: St. Louis, Missouri, USA St. Louis was the Gateway to the West. A hub for both rail and maritime traffic along the Mississippi, it was an important last-stop for pioneers headed westward. As with many cities, it’s transit has fallen from grace but let’s take a look: Metrolink operates the two rail lines, red and blue, which run east-west. Though coverage is sparse, they do connect important points like downtown, the airport, Amtrak, Washington University, and even cross the river into Illinois. The city has a pretty robust bus network operated my Metrolink and Madison County Transit. City coverage is good and the extent into surrounding areas is respectable. St. Louis recently brought back the Delmar Loop Trolley to ease congestion in that specific area. The result has been favorable and another route is planned for downtown. Sadly, a far cry from a once enviable trolley network. Lastly, three Amtrak services connect St. Louis: The Lincoln Service to Chicago, the Missouri River Runner to Kansas City, and the Texas Eagle from Chicago to Los Angeles. It’s worth noting that the former grand Union Station has been replaced with the extremely unexciting Gateway Station. Similarly to Kansas City, the city’s transit network was once great but today has been replaced with a decent bus network. Strade, incroci, rotonde, parcheggi, cavalcavia, sottopassaggi... 🚶♂️Il cittadino è costretto a camminare in un fazzoletto di spazio rimanente chiamato "marciapiede", e andare in bici vuol dire rischiare la morte di continuo. In 10 anni, a Milano sono morte 470 persone per incidenti stradali (47 all’anno, 4 al mese) e 120 mila sono le persone rimaste ferite (dati ISTAT). Oggi abbiamo la possibilità di cambiare le cose, e riguadagnare spazio per la vita collettiva anche a livello urbano. Take one look at the road in question and it’s obvious that this death, like the many others that occur on roads designed to solely focus on the speed of motor vehicle traffic, could have been prevented with infrastructure that prioritizes the safety of pedestrians, cyclists, and drivers. I pulled a screenshot from Google Maps of a section of the terribly designed car sewer that is Cedar Lane Road (2nd image). Since this is a state road outside city limits, I didn’t remove motor vehicle lanes entirely, but it is clear from my Photoshop revision that there is ample room to keep a couple lanes of traffic for cars, while adding wider sidewalks and protected bike lanes. Keep in mind that this, and any of the AI or Photoshop illustrations on this account are not intended to be proposed designs, but just quick reimagines of roads that were poorly designed, often by traffic engineers closely following the same codes and specifications that they have been using (and seldom questioning) for years. If we really want to do something about the epidemic of traffic violence that is plaguing our streets though, it’s time to start thinking differently. The roadway design manuals that state DOTs heavily really on were originally created to maximize speed and flow of motor vehicle traffic, and safety has always been a secondary concern. Ironically, those outdated ways of thinking rarely, if ever, accomplish the primary task of maximizing traffic speed. All they do is lead to congested, unfriendly, and aesthetically unappealing roads that are dangerous by design. We can, and should, do better.

I’ve been a fan of JH Crawford and his website, carfree.com, for a long time. I bought his first book when it came out in the early 2000s, but I didn’t pick up a copy of the follow-up book, Carfree Design Manual, until recently. The first book talks about the benefits of car-free cities and gives practical examples of how cities around the world fiction with little or no motor vehicle traffic. The second book shows how to design and implement car-free districts, and should be required reading for every urban planner and traffic engineer in the United States (including here in Greenville). I highly recommend that you check out these books and explore Crawford’s website. The site is no longer updated regularly like it once was, but it’s still a great resource for information about car-free places around the globe? Parliament Street looked well today. Just one more car-free weekend left, and hopefully the weather gods will be kind on 19/20 August. There were face painters, and giant games for children, but still perhaps too much emphasis on drinking, rather than food culture. It was also good to see bikes kept out, which contributed to making the street a more friendly place for young families. Meanwhile the footfall is up on Capel Street, and there’s a nice buzz to the area. Hopefully the proposed landscaping will benefit both nearby residents and visitors alike. There’s always winners and losers when an area changes. John from Mitchell’s Car Accessories told me they have been trading on the street since 1904. He was telling me the other day that demand for wiper blades and oil had disappeared, but there’s been a huge boost for many of the restaurants from pedestrianisation. The nature of cities is constant change. I suspect Capel Street will thrive in the years ahead. It may not be possible to fully pedestrianise Parliament Street, but there’s certainly scope to extend car-free areas in the city centre, and in our urban villages. #ParliamentStreet #CarFreeCities #CleanAirZone
