"oh it's just some unpaid short film, it's not like it really matters" Au contraire, friend. I've been asked to light some really fun commercial shoots because of the effort I put into lighting everything I say yes to. Back in January 2023 I had the joy of working with Jill and Chloe on an unpaid short film, @werewolfmargarita. That film has gone on to win best comedy-horror at one festival, was nominated for best cinematography as well, and it turns out Chloe is the humble owner of an entire fashion business! A line of clothing that Jill was even wearing throughout the shoot without knowing it belonged to Chloe lol When Jill and Chloe inevitably synced up to launch a new clothing line, I was first on the list to come light the indoor scenes! If I hadn't given 100% to "some unpaid short film" last year, then this year I wouldn't have been able to enjoy one of the most infectiously joyful sets I've ever had the pleasure of being on. Maybe that's why so many teams come to town and say, "wow, you're not like the last gaffer we worked with back in nowheresville. How nice to work with someone who is actually excited about the job!" -- This was a rush job - I only had an hour to set this look up! So it was critical to work with Jill ahead of time to establish exactly the look and feel she was going for with this shot. First, this is day for night, so everything needed to be blacked out. A @kelvincinemalighting epos 300 through a 3' softbox with grid acts as the key. This light was positioned at a Rembrandt angle for when our talent walks up into the counter into her B mark. An @aputure.lighting nova 300 panel pointed at the wall and ceiling fills the room with a saturated blue hour wash. A flag helps control the spill from hitting the talent or back wall directly. A couple infinibars were placed on the shelving unit in the corner to help lift that out of darkness, another one was placed the stove for the same reason. The Inverse Square Law is a general principle of physics because it comes about as a result of the function of the surface area of a sphere. The Inverse Square Law is defined as the intensity of a physical quantity (light, sound, etc.) being inversely proportional to the square of the distance from the source. Simplified, this means that our lights don't reduce linearly with distance, but exponentially. But you knew the math behind this ever since you were a kid! We can derive this same formula from the surface area of a sphere. To make this a little easier, let's redefine "light" as "a certain number of photons" because that's basically what watts is if you dive into the units. So a sphere with radius of distance "r" from our point source would have a certain number of photons covering its surface area, let's say the surface area is 4 for sake of ease. If we double the radius of our sphere to "2r", we don't double the surface area, we quadruple it due to that squared portion. And we now have a sphere with surface area of 16. The number of photons being ejected from our light source didn't change, but we did just increase our surface area by a favor of 4. So the same number of photons that covered a sphere with a surface area of 4 must also cover a sphere with a surface area of 16. Which means, that any corresponding portion of the second sphere is receiving 1/4 the number of photons as the initial sphere! This works whether we're talking about the whole sphere as an idealized point source radiating into space, or we're talking about a specific beam angle of that sphere, which would be more akin to our lights, because units cancel in ratios! A 35° beam angle is really a ratio of 35/360, and since both sides of our ratio carry that same fraction, they'd cancel out, and we'd still be left with a ratio of 1 to 4! So no matter how you want to calculate it, DOUBLING THE DISTANCE REDUCES INTENSITY BY 1/4. Hope this helped you see the inverse square law in a new light!
Check out the lighting diagram👉👉 Yall ain’t gonna believe how I ended up lighting this shot!!😂 This truly goes to show that if you know how to work with lighting you can create good looking shots and scenes with extremely minimal equipment. This shot isn’t perfect by any means but to think we lit it with something as simple as the flashlights on our phones is crazy to me! @electric_slizzard and I went out to film a couple of B-Roll shots alongside @victorromanik and @_john.pattison_ to finish up “Catacomb” last night and ended up creating one of the most innovative lighting setups I’ve probably ever done. Last night we didn’t bring any lights since we were just shooting some building exteriors, and it comes up that we should get one more shot of the main character inside of the picture car. Luckily we put our thinking caps on and thought “what if we did it with phone flashlights and work off of the building practical?” So that’s exactly what we did and man it’s crazy to fathom that we filmed this shot on an extremely cheap camera body and lights that everybody carries on themselves every single day #cinematography #coloradofilm #denverfilm #filmmaking #lowlight #nightfilm #thankjesus #thankgod

Do you know the best way to place a flag for the hardest cut? While setting flags, nets, and large frames is primarily a grip's job, every gaffer is inevitably going to find themselves working without one. Here's two simple rules to follow when placing flags with point source lights to achieve the desired effect: - for a soft/fuzzy cut, place the flag closer to the light - for a hard cut, place the flag as close as possible to the surface where the shadow falls The closer a flag and light are together, the fuzzier the cut, which can be a nice way to have light gradually taper off a background. For the hardest, cleanest cut, place the light as far back as the space and output will allow, and then place the flag as close to frame as possible. This effect happens because our point source lights aren't infinitely small dots, but do occupy some amount of 3D space. When you place a flag close to the light source, you may be cutting light from one side of the COB/reflector/fresnel, while light from the other side is still shining unobstructed into the desired shadow area. The further a flag is from the source, the smaller the output area appears relative to the flag, and the more optimal the cut will be as a result. And to make the sharpest cuts with absolute ease, go get yourself a spotlight! ----- An @intellytech mega-8 saves the day in this tight fitting setup, allowing me to fully fill an 8x8 magic cloth within a distance of a few feet. This compact but soft key light setup allowed us to place our talent deep into the golf simulator bay, and more importantly gave the DP the look he was going for. TM-30 has quickly become one of the two new standards for how the quality of a light is measured, but what does it actually test for? Well, there's actually 3 components to reading a TM-30 score! The first is the Rf value, or a light's fidelity index. This is an averaged score from 1 (worst) to 100 (best) that measures a lights ability to accurately reproduce 99 pre-determined colors, a much wider range than CRI or TLCI uses. Lights scoring above 90 generally reproduce colors fairly accurately. The second value is the Rg value, the lights gamut index. The gamut index measures how saturated the colors are that are produced by this light. This is also an averaged score, but can range from below 60 to above 140, with 100 meaning equivalent saturation to a daylight reference. Below 100 means a color appears desaturated by this light, over 100 means a color would appear oversaturated. Lastly, the color vector graph is a visual display of which colors are saturated or desaturated by the light, and also which way those hues shift if at all. This is represented as a circle overlaid on top of a color wheel, with the points of the circle corresponding to the test points, and little arrows indicating shifts of saturation and hue. TM-30 is a comprehensive test that really digs into the nuances of the color reproduction of a light. It's no wonder that it's become the favorite of a lot of DP's and gaffers since it's inception!
Cosa ne penso del film 𝑭𝒂𝒃𝒃𝒓𝒊𝒄𝒂𝒏𝒕𝒆 𝑫𝒊 𝑳𝒂𝒄𝒓𝒊𝒎𝒆 tratto dal libro di @erindoom_official uscito il 4 aprile su @netflixit Partiamo dal presupposto che ho preferito il libro perché ci sono più scene, più dettagli etc. Ovviamente nel film non si potevano mettere tutte le scene, altrimenti sarebbe stato lunghissimo, a parer mio sono state messe quelle utili per raccontare la storia. Anche se avrei preferito vedere un paio di scene importanti nel libro. A me onestamente è piaciuto e ho compreso tutto, forse perché avevo già letto il libro e conoscevo bene anche i dettagli della storia, ma so che alcune persone che l'hanno visto senza aver letto il libro non hanno capito alcune scene ad esempio quella del ponte. Per quanto riguarda la scelta degli attori, a livello estetico sono quasi perfetti (peccato per billie, me la immaginavo bionda e riccia). Rigel, Nica, Anna, Norman, Miki e Anna sono esteticamente come me li immaginavo (Lionel è troppo bello, me lo aspettavo più "bruttino", ma non mi posso lamentare). Le location erano PERFETTE, bellissime, me le sono immaginate esattamente così. A livello di recitazione, dobbiamo mettere in conto che che sono ATTORI EMERGENTI, non possiamo compararli ad attori con molta esperienza. Simone Baldasseroni/Biondo (Rigel) l'ho trovato freddo e distaccato, esattamente come mi aspettavo che fosse Rigel. Caterina Feriola (Nica) ha espresso molto bene la delicatezza di Nica. Nicky Passarella (Billie) è stata una rivelazione, mi è piaciuta un sacco. Stessa cosa per Alessandro Bedetti (Lionel). Mi è piaciuta meno Eco Andriolo (Adeline). A molti i "sussurri" e i toni di voce non sono piaciuti, ma penso che volessero ricreare la delicatezza e la fragilità. Secondo me ci sono riusciti, anche se probabilmente alcune di queste scene si potevano diminuire. Tutto sommato a me non è dispiaciuto, nonostante io rimanga dell'idea che il film non abbia reso giustizia al libro, purtroppo. Ancora prima che vedessi il film (visto ieri sera) mi ero ripromesso che non avrei scritto nulla (letto il libro) sul film tratto da “Fabbricante di lacrime” perché sarebbe stato difficile per me, essere obiettivo nel giudicare una pellicola tratta da un romanzo che utilizza l’aggettivo “maliardo” con la stessa frequenza con cui il mitico Peppiniello urlava “Vincenzo m’è padre a me” in quel capolavoro di Scarpetta. Quindi farò così: non parlerò di Fabbricante di lacrime in senso stretto, ma in senso lato, visto che trovo particolarmente interessante soffermarmi su cosa faccia di un film o di un libro o di una serie tv qualcosa che oggi in Italia è sempre più raro, ossia un prodotto di consumo popolare. Paola Cortellesi c’è la fatta attraverso un film (c’è ancora domani) che è riuscito a toccare tutti i tasti giusti in un momento storico particolarmente delicato per tutti noi: cosa è riuscito a toccare invece, Erin Doom dei sogni e delle aspirazioni delle adolescenti di oggi? Semplice, qualcosa di non particolarmente originale ma che evidentemente continua a esercitare un grande fascino in chi lo affronta: il mito della ragazza ingenua che si taglia con un grissino e del tenebroso dongiovanni che pensa di non meritare l’amore di nessuno e che poi finisce a limonare duro con la ragazza. In mezzo a questo tormento amoroso di cui sappiamo tutti la fine, però, Erin Doom ci mette dell’altro: dalla perfida direttrice dell’orfanotrofio, a una sfilza di adulti completamente inattrezzati a comprendere i giovani. Perché quindi “Fabbricante” funziona? Perché ripropone quello che abbiamo segretamente voluto da quando da piccoli ci appassionavamo (cartone animato) alla “storia” tra Heric & Rossana: un ragazzo da salvare e una reputazione da conservare integra dall’inizio alla fine. Onore a Erin Doom per averlo capito e a Salani e a Netflix per averci creduto. La verità? This year we have @uhl_uhl_uhl and @samwburt Castle Rock Film Festival | April 12 &13 Sam W Burt a Denver based Producer and Pop Artist- whose cinematic composition and unmatched stage presence make this Queer artist someone to look out for. Uhl- Showcasing her operatic background through a pop lens, Uhl makes dynamic music that is as informed by Mozart and Puccini as it is by art pop divas Kate Bush and Annie Lennox. Uhl began studying music formally at the age of 12 when she developed a deep affinity for opera and classical music and a youthful drive to live life as a professional opera singer. Her four years of conservatory training concluded just as the world was going into lockdown. Like many musicians during 2020, Uhl found time away from the rigors of her routines which, in her case, meant a break from the classical music world. She utilized this moment to pursue writing her own music and in doing so she found her voice.
