Pinto Fonseca is well known for his arrangements of folk music. Tania León is the current Composer-in-Residence for the London Philharmonic Orchestra, the latest accomplishment for this composer, conductor, educator, and advisor for arts organizations. Born in Havana, Cuba, she is a founding member and the first Music Director for the Dance Theater of Harlem. Her music synthesizes Latin American and Cuban influences with the classical training she received at Havana’s Carlos Alfredo Peyrellade Conservatory and the US’s New York University. Her orchestral work Stride, commissioned by the New York Philharmonic in celebration of the centennial of the 19th Amendment, was awarded the 2021 Pulitzer Prize in Music. In 2022, she was named a recipient of the 45th Annual Kennedy Center Honors for lifetime artistic achievements. Did you know that composer Gioachino Rossini was almost completely retired from composing music (and had completed all his operas!) by the time he was 40? Born on Leap Day in 1792, Rossini’s first opera premiered when he was just 18. Before he moved from his childhood hometown to Naples, he had already composed fourteen operas. Rossini composed many of his famous operas (including The Barber of Seville and La Gazza Ladra) while living in Naples. Seven years later, he moved again to become part of the influential music scene in Paris. His final opera, Guillaume Tell (William Tell), premiered in 1829 to much acclaim and then, at the young age of 38, he retired. Spending the rest of his life in Italy and France, he continued to compose only small pieces for what we now call house concerts as well as two sacred choral works.
