Siempre me ha cautivado la novela de #patriciahighsmith "El Talento de Mr Ripley". He seguido con pasión sus adaptaciones al cine, geniales , basadas en la contraposición de un sol y una belleza despampanantes con el frío, gris y calculador #mrripley . Pero en este caso la #serie que propone @netflixes es en blanco y negro, bajo un cielo permanente nublado, como la trama. Qué gran idea:) No os perdáis la genial #fotografia , las localizaciones tan bien escogidas, cómo han sabido captar la belleza decadente que pertenece sólo a Italia... Awesome Welles - feeling good having completed my second painting this year after many years away from it. This painting is based on a black and white photo of Orson Welles circa 1940’s. The colour scheme is taken from the original artwork of a film he stared in and directed in 1946 called The Stranger, a classic noir that also features the great Edward B Robinson. I couldn’t help think of his character in Citizen Kane while painting this too, and the slightly deformed, green and almost gangrenous shadow side kind of evokes the character trajectory of Charles Foster Kane, as well as the villainous protagonist he plays in The Stranger. Last night, in the Cineplex Robeon, I continued picking a movie I've yet to see from the "1,001 Movies You Must See Before You Die" list. This time I chose Orson Welles' sophomore jinx picture... 'The Magnificent Ambersons'. The synopsis is that a petulant heir to a family fortune consisting of old money comes between his widowed mother and the only man she ever truly loved. All this plays out while the family resists change in a quickly changing America. I've never attended a film studies class of any type... I love movies and discovering both new creative artists and their films while also learning about the films that influenced the art we have today. 'The Magnificent Ambersons' is probably the best movie that never stood a chance of success... and it's obviously the darling of the film studies crowd for very good reason. Welles shot the film that he felt would surpass 'Citizen Kane'... which everyone doubted he could accomplish. Then events and the studio conspired against him. The studio was unhappy with the costs incurred... including lavish set design. America had just entered the second world war and it was felt nobody wanted to see a long depressing movie. There were two test screenings that didn't go well because they were tacked onto other movies as a surprise double feature paired with movies that attracted an audience uninterested in what Welles had made. The studio took that poor feedback, tricked Welles into leaving the country, then cut over 40 minutes out of Welles' masterpiece and re-shot a "happy ending"... effectively destroying Welles' art. Despite all of that, this is still a great movie. Leaving one wondering what could have been. The studio supposedly destroyed the cut film stock so Welles couldn't reconstruct his movie... I wish I could see what Welles intended. Better Man - recorded by the band I named Pearl Jam...I created the song years after going thru the film credits of Peter Lorre who was the first to portray Ian Fleming's character "Le Chiffre" in the first adaption of "Casino Royale" for the tv show "Climax!". This lead me to the work of Charles Bennett who appeared with Lorre in the 1938 film "Mysterious Mr. Moto". I came across the work of Charles Bennett again in Citizen Kane (1941) with Orson Welles who appeared in "Casino Royale" '67. Just finished this book on the life of Bernard Herrmann. I really enjoyed it as it explained how advanced he was. for eg. On one of his radio melodrama broadcasts with Orson Welles, he wanted a string section to be recorded through an electronic oscillator. This was the 1940s. Last night, I went to movies on my own for the first time for the release of the restored version of a masterpiece in the history of cinema. "Citizen Kane." Year 1941. This two-hour picture was a life experience because Orson Welles gave me everything and nothing at the same time. He gave me cinema. Everything because this ground- but especially rule-breaking project made me relish every single corner of every single frame estetically as well as interiorly. Emotions were always one against its counterpart, with apparently no approaching end of it. Nothing because this jigsaw-shaped, multilayered story showed me what I usually see is not what it actually seems. Certainties hand-in-hand with uncertainties wrestling each other, engraving on me the impression of how I might end up drowning in doubts myself about something in my life I am so sure I've known the first place. Sürekli gördüğümüz abartılı yakın çekimler, ani hareketler yapan kamera ve üst üste binen diyaloglar, arkadaki müzikle birleşince yapıma kuvvetli bi kara film hissi veriyor. People who have books in print believe that their books would make great films. Many of the films made are adapted from written work. The process for me and all writers is to get the characters in your head, living and breathing. Get the scenes in your head ... and it becomes a film in your head as you write the words. Little wonder when the books are finished, you see them as films. The easy part is believing in yourself that your books are made for film. The hard part is getting others to believe. If your books are adapted, the screenwriter will have their own film in their head as they go about their work. The director will then have the film in their head and shoot it the way they see it.
