Tonight we finished Steven Zaillian’s Ripley starring Andrew Scott A grifter named Ripley living in New York during the 1960s is hired by a wealthy man to bring his vagabond son home from Italy. Having seen Anthony Minghella’s The talented mr Ripley and Ripley’s Game starring John Malkovich I was keen to see this. Steven Zaillian is a brilliant screen writer and I enjoyed his directorial series The Night Of. This a beautifully shot series which feels lived In the era it is set. The cinematography is sublime and the decision to shoot it in black and white really sets it apart. Andrew Scott, on a career high after All of us strangers, is brilliant as the calm, treacherous Ripley, He is again mesmerising carrying the series through its tense 8 episodes. It is very true to the source material, but let’s it breath unlike the tighter scope of the Matt Damon film. What could possibly go wrong with a cargo plane filled with terrorist, serial killers and dudes who think it’s cute to abuse women? Nothing, if Nic Cage has anything to do with it. It’s a simple movie but it’s full of solid actors, cheesy dialogue, memorable characters and dramatic action sequences. It’s everything we loved about 90s movies. This movie falls in my top three Nic Cage films alongside ‘Face Off’ and ‘National Treasure’. I chose this as my contribution to @perthmarketer #aircraftapril event. В этом понимании белизны как ужаса французский автор конца ХХ века неожиданно сближается с американским классиком Германом Мелвиллом, считавшим, что «в самой идее белизны таится нечто неуловимое, но более жуткое, чем в зловещем красном цвете крови» и видевшим в отсутствии всякого цвета широких заснеженных пространств «всецветную бесцветность безбожия, которое не по силам человеку». Действие спектакля Тимофея Кулябина, поставленного в рижском театре «Дайлес», разворачивается не в пугающей своей безграничностью белизне, а в сгустившейся непроницаемой темноте. Оно начинается с проецируемых на висящий над сценой огромный экран черно-белых кадров: пришедший домой человек, по виду офисный служащий, раздевается, будто скидывая вместе с одеждой проблемы прошедшего дня и пытается расслабиться самым простым из доступных способов. Однако неловкие, почти мучительные попытки самоудовлетворения не приносят облегчения, и, бессильно привалившись к дверному косяку, герой застывает на полу ванной комнаты, после чего его изображение будто разъедается кислотой, и сквозь него проступают иные черты, а на сцене появляются двое актеров, два голоса, звучащие в его голове, – Джон Малкович и Ингеборга Дапкунайте, словно отражая разные ипостаси одного человека, в котором сочетаются мужское и женское, нежность и жестокость, страх и трепет. Актеры одинаково одеты - в белые рубашки и темно-серые брюки, без обуви.
