Today’s town: Litchfield! I visited the Litchfield Law School, a museum about the first law school in the country. It’s free! Then I went exploring at the White Memorial Foundation. I walked almost 5 miles there but still saw only a fraction of their trails. :) The lady there told me the trails are open 24/7. Since I was a kid, my family has stopped for lunch on the way to visiting relatives in MA at “that place with the yellow roof.” The decor hasn’t changed in at least 30 years, except the perfume machine in the bathroom is gone. Town 20/169: East Hartford! I was passing through the area today and stopped in at Protectors of Animals to give them a donation of towels. It was really rainy and I only went into the vestibule since it’s not adoption day, but the volunteer signed my book for me! This is the shelter where my boys came from. It’s a no-kill shelter and they give the animals so much love. Speaking of towns with independent book stores, New Milford was today’s adventure. I stopped in at the Bank Street Book Nook to get a couple books to send to friends. I also visited the excellent pet bakery next door, and found the most Instagram-ready, probably designed by Joanna Gaines coffee shop ever (and I go to a lot of cute coffee shops), right across the street at the River and Rail Café. I basically just scratched the surface of New Milford’s shopping district. Some towns are synonymous in my mind with the name of the book stores that live there. Madison is where RJ Julia is. I popped in the other day to buy some books as gifts for friends and found out about tonight’s signing with Dani Shapiro, so I went back. I got my Connecticut 169 Club book signed by Roxanne Cody herself, which was an honor! Madison also has Willoughby’s coffee shop, Ashley’s ice cream, and Hammonassett Beach. Its Main Street area (on Boston Post Road) is full of little shops. Besides the book store and the ice cream parlor, it has an independent movie theatre and the library.
