When you visit the town of Holbrook, Arizona today, with it's fun WigWam motel, dinosaurs, rock shops, and kitschy Route 66 vibe, you would never know that Holbrook was once know as "The town too tough for women and churches"! The Holbrook Museum describes the town as the roughest, toughest, most lawless, bloody town of the Old West! And Holbrook is said to have been wilder than Tombstone in the past! It's origins and history are rich in wild tales and legends! If you love history and historical places like we do, be sure to stop at the Bucket of Blood Saloon, when you visit Holbrook! Today the saloon sits boarded up and quiet. But we were intrigued by this historical landmark. You could feel the history seeping out of the walls. You could almost hear the sounds of the past. Such a cool old building. In the Holbrook museum, is a painting from the wall of the saloon. You can see a bullet hole in the painting! Crazy! They say that even after all these years, there is still a stain on the floor from the shoot out in 1886 that gave this famous saloon it's name. To hear the story, go to our previous post. There are several versions of the shoot out, leaving you to decide for yourself what really happened. One of the men believed to be involved in the shoot out was Joe Crawford. They believe that Crawford was really Grat Dalton of the infamous Dalton Gang! We have only scratched the surface of all the history waiting to be retold, here in Holbrook! There's more than one WigWam Motel! 🤯 Follow us @thefunseekers Circa 1965 I had completely forgotten this until my mom reminded me after my post about fulfilling my childhood dream! Remember, I said Mom was from Kentucky? The very first WigWam Motel was in Horse Cave, Kentucky. Sadly it no longer exists. But the second one is still in operation in Cave City, Kentucky. And when visiting my parents family we visited (but did not stay at) the location in Cave City. The WigWam Motel in Horse Cave was built in 1933 and the one in Cave City 1937. The original design for the motels was by Frank A. Redford. Seven of these funky motels were built across the country. (As well as many copycats!) Only 3 survive today. The ones in Cave City, KY. and Holbrook, AZ plus one in San Bernardino, CA. (How did we not know about this?) All 3 are listed on the National Register of Historic Places. The ones in Holbrook and San Bernardino are both on Route 66. The San Bernardino location was built by Frank A. Redford for himself starting in 1947. Chester E. Lewis built the one in Holbrook in 1950 and it is still operated by the Lewis family to this day! Payment for the use of the name "WigWam Village" was set up between the two men in an unusual way. Coin operated radios were installed in each of the 'tipis' in Holbrook. It cost a dime for 30 minutes of radio play time. This money was given to Redford by Lewis for the use of the name. Childhood dreams do come true! 💜 Follow us @thefunseekers A little personal history... My mom is from Kentucky and moved to Los Angeles and met my dad and they got married. During the 60s and 70s we regularly drove to Kentucky to visit Mom's side of the family. Much of that time the drive was made over Route 66. Oh the joys my parents must of have had to endure with two kids in the car wanting to stop at every crazy roadside attraction along the way! One of those trips was taken in a black GTO with no air conditioner in the summer! I have a love affair with cars, especially vintage cars, to this day! So many great memories...The one place that stuck out in my mind most into adulthood was the Wig Wam Motel! Every trip, going and coming, I begged to stay there! But no way! Not happening! Not staying there! So fast forward to us planning our Grand Northern Arizona New Mexico Road Trip Adventure a couple of years ago. Everyone had ideas of where they wanted to go. The Grand Canyon. Sedona. Santa Fe. But for me the one must see, non negotiable thing I must do is stay at the Wig Wam Motel! It was fantastic! LOVED IT! And guess who was on this road trip with us? My mom! She had to stay in the Wig Wam Motel! 🤣 She was a great sport about it, too! So the brass tacks about the Wig Wam Motel... It is clean. It is comfortable. It is fun. The staff was very friendly. The rooms are decorated in a Southwest motif. No extra frills. It was quite nice for an old Route 66 road side attraction motel that is made up of concrete teepees for rooms! There are a lot of vintage cars around the property to look at as well as several large pieces of petrified wood. Along old Route 66 there were many trading post type gift shops. Some are still there and some are now right off I-40. The one with the best collection of large petrified wood is the Geronimo Trading Post. We love this fun shop and bought a few things here. If you stop here and have other destinations in your travel plans, remember you'll likely get better prices elsewhere. We purchased a piece of petrified wood at the Petrified Forest National Park gift shop at a much more reasonable price. But this doesn't mean Geronimo Trading Post isn't worth the stop! It certainly is! At Geronimo Trading Post you might find a piece of petrified wood that has colors that you just can't live without! They have a huge selection! They have kitschy souvenirs galore, Native American made jewelry (tho we recommend buying native art directly from the artist whenever possible), Route 66 merchandise and, of course moccasins for the entire family! So, when driving through the desert on I-40 in northern Arizona follow the abundant signs to Geronimo Trading Post! You'll probably want to plan an hour or so to spend here. A hotel with history that has many twists and turns. La Posada opened shortly after the beginning of the great depression in May of 1930. Architect Mary Colter considered it her masterpiece. She was able to have control over every aspect of the hotel's creation. Not just designing the building but also the landscaping, furnishings, the china used in the restaurant, etc. But La Posada was only open for 27 years when it closed. It remained in the ownership of the Santa Fe Railroad, even serving as the office headquarters for the railroad. When the railroad moved out of the hotel it's very existence was put at risk. The National Trust for Historic Preservation added the grand hotel to it's endangered list. From that list Allen Affeldt learned about the hotel and after much negotiation was able to buy La Posada to save this building of great historical significance. Unfortunately, over the years, all the high end furnishings and artwork that Mary Colter had so carefully curated had been sold off. Because of this, beside a major renovation, Affeldt had to acquire artwork and all appropriate furnishings. It is said that La Posada now embodies both the visions of Mary Colter and Allen Affeldt. This wonderful hotel is now filled with beautiful art and gorgeous funky Southwest furnishings! There are several rooms in the common areas of the hotel that serve as small at galleries featuring many local artists. Follow @thefunseekers The best place to stay in the fun little town of Winslow, Arizonsa, is hands down, the La Posada Hotel! Mary Jane Colter, considered by many to be the greatest of all southwestern architects, created La Posada, and it opened in 1930! If you have been to the Grand Canyon, you will have seen some of Mary's other stunning work! She designed most of the buildings along the rim of the Grand Canyon! She designed those buildings in a beautiful and unique way, to blend in with the rock formations, so you notice the canyon not the buildings! Her creations are awesome! La Posada is considered to be her crowning achievement! Watch for our next posts to see the interior of this stunning hotel, the garden, and we will show you the very cool room we stayed in too! La Posada Hotel was also the last of the great Fred Harvey/Santa Fe Railway hotels! Fred Harvey, who “civilized the west” by introducing linen, silverware, china, crystal, and impeccable service to railroad travel. He was so legendary that MGM made a movie called The Harvey Girls starring Judy Garland. The Harvey Girls were the efficient, respectable, and polite, workers at the Harvey hotels and restaurants! You always knew a Harvey Girl by their unique uniforms featuring long black dresses, with long crisp white aprons over them. In the 1920s, Harvey decided to build La Posada to be the finest in the Southwest. Construction costs alone exceeded $1 million in 1929! Total budget with grounds and furnishings was rumored at $2 million! The Trail of Whispering Giants! I had never heard of this! I learned something new in Winslow! Through most of the 1970s & 80s self taught sculptor and Hungarian immigrant Peter Wolf Toth created a series of 58 sculptures. He did one for each state and also some in Canada. Toth started this incredible project as a tribute to the original inhabitants of the area that became the United States. With the inclusion of Canada it became a tribute to all native people's in North America. Toth said of this project "This is my concept of the Indians of this area. I study the Indians of the area, then visualize an Indian within the log. It is a composite of all the native people of the state." Extinct Ground Sloth, mummified animals, crystals, Snowball Palace, and more, 200 feet underground! As you walk through the giant rooms of the Grand Canyon Caverns you are overwhelmed! Then your tour guide begins to tell you the history of the caverns, and point out all the cool little details, and the caverns take on a whole new life! Awesome rock formations are all over the caverns! One of our favorites, the snow ball palace! Rocks rock! Rare beautiful crystal formations are everywhere in the caverns! In Chapel of the Ages is the largest know deposite of Selenite Crystals! Including Helictites, shaped in a tiny delicate arch! The caverns started forming 345 million years ago! Water was the driving force behind the caverns formation, and you can see beautiful wavy rocks, that are ancient waterways! You can also see Fish fossils in the walls of the caverns! In 1927 Walter Peck triped an almost fell into a hole, and discovered the caverns! Unfortunately over the years animals happened upon the hole, and fell in. There is a mummified bobcat and coyote that were found in the caverns. And the bones of an extinct Giant Ground Sloth were found too! These Sloths were around at the time of Wolly Mammoths! The bones are now on display at the local museum, and the museum gave the caverns a lifesize replica sloth for cave explorers to discover! Seeing this massive creature is an awe inspiring site. Be sure to stand in Mammoth Dome! This shaft towers 145 feet above you and makes for a great photo op! These are just a few of the tons of amazing things we saw in the caverns! Hotel room, wedding chapel, restaurant, tours, and ghosts 200 feet underground! Follow @thefunseekers What's going on down there? There is just so much going on 21 stories under the earth's surface at Grand Canyon Caverns! In the caverns is the Grotto, where you can have lunch or dinner in the cave! (See our previous 2 post for our lunch in the Grotto adventure!) And there is an open air hotel room in the cave! So awesome! A large platform in one of the larger rooms in the cave has all the amenities of a hotel room! (Except the bathroom, you have to take the elevator up for that.) It can sleep up to 6! It is expensive for this once in a lifetime experience. But if you can swing it, how fun would this be! We would love to stay here some time! Grand Canyon Caverns also has a large area with movie theater seats and a stage where couples get married! Couples even leave their bouquets and ties on the cave wall! So fun! And the cave doubles as an emergency shelter! On our tour we passed by a lot of supplies stored down there! The caverns offer a regular tour, lit with really pretty colored lights! And a ghost tour, in the dark with flash lights! They say there is paranormal activity going on down there! Vans and the beach! The perfect combination! And our Vans Man! Follow is! @thefunseekers These two Cali Girls love the beach anytime of year! And, not to date ourselves, we have been wearing Vans since the mid 1970s! I remember saving up my allowance and getting my mom to drive me to the Vans store to buy my first pair! Anyway, when visiting California the beach is a must see, of course! Debbie and I do disagree when it comes to our favorite beaches. Debbie's fav is a tie between Huntington and Del Beach! She loves Huntington because it has special memories of going there with her mom and dad when she was little, and going there as a teenager with her Uncle Russ and with me! She loves to eat at Dukes right on the sand, and Huntington's surf culture, especially the US Open of Surfing! (We have a Cali Girl secret on how Huntington got is nickname "Surf City" that we'll share with you some time! 😁) She loves Del Beach because she loves to sit out on the sand, in a lounge chair next to a cute red fringe unbrella, with a tasty drink, enjoying the beautiful ocean view! She loves to make s'mores out on the sand! And to eat lunch on the Hotel Del Coronado Sun Deck, right next to the water! Mine is Venice. I love the boardwalk with it's grittier arty scene. And I love the assortment of food on the boardwalk! Pasadena, California is the #1 January 1st holiday destination in the world! The parade goes by pretty fast! If you want to get a closer look at these beautiful floats, here is our hot tip: A Showcase of Floats! After the Rose Parade, the floats are parked at E Sierra Madre Blvd and E Washington Blvd, in Pasadena! The floats are on display for 2 days! You can stroll along and and enjoy looking at the float details up close! And it makes for great photo ops too! We have gone to the Showcase of Floats! It is really fun! There is a fee to get in, and parking is limited, so check tournamentofroses.com for more info. Here are our favorite little details from this years parade! We loved the Huntington Library float! The "marble" gazebo in the middle was especially beautiful! We loved the tikis on the Hawaiian float! And we thought the cat and owl reading float was especially cute! Glitter on horses! So fun! Apparently the latest fashion for bands is big plumes sticking out of their hats! Almost every band had them! And we noticed bands were especially friendly this year, greeting parade goers as they marched by! We loved all the beautiful tall flags! Since we both were in tall flags together in high school, we had to give them a shout out! Our hats off to those that walked 5 miles on stilts! We always love to see the queen and her court! We thought her float was especially beautiful this year, with a red crown encircling her! And we loved the cute little baby floats that started and ended the parade, with big roses on them, and saying where flowers and football meet! So cute! Our favorite 2020 Rose Parade Float! Hope's Heros! Follow @thefunseekers The 12 Days of Cali Chrstmas! Day 12! The Grand Finale! The Rose Parade! The very first Rose Parade took place in 1890! So this year is the 131st Rose Parade! With such a long, beautiful, and fun history, it is no wonder the Rose Parade is the ultimate New Years Day destination for Fun Seekers! We think everyone should see the parade in person at least once in their life. No matter how many times you have seen it on tv, there is nothing like seeing it in person! The floats covered in thousands and thousands of flowers, are just so beautiful and overwhelming! Evey single thing on the floats is covered in organic material! You have to see them to fully appreciate their beauty and all the work that goes into them! Here are our hot tip: You can see the floats being decorated in the days leading up to the parade! The float builders open their doors, and for a small fee, you can take a tour and watch the volunteers, called petal pushers, decorate the floats! Believe it or not, they put every flower on one at a time by hand! We have taken the tour, and it is really fun! The theme of the parade this year is The Power of Hope! We think this is a particularly awesome theme! Floats totally cover in real flowers, bands from around the world, and our favorite, equestrian units! We love animals, so our favorite this year was the Budweiser Clydesdales and their "brother" and team member, the dalmatian dog! They are so beautiful, and cute! We love them! Here is our hot tip: If you love horses like we do, you can get up close and personal with the equestrian units at Equestfest!!! Equestfest takes place a couple of days before the Rose Parade in Burbank, California! At Equestfest, you can watch the beautiful horses and talented riders perform drills and dances, and demonstrate trick riding and roping! You can also stroll through the stables, talk to riders, and learn about the various tack and the many different breeds! There is also a vendor court, displays, music, food, and drinks! The world famous pink line! The 12 Days of Cali Christmas! Day 12! The grand Finale! The Rose Parade! Fun fact! Float drivers sit in small compartments, inside the floats, with very limited visibility. So how do they drive? There is a pink line painted all the way down Colorado Blvd! The drivers look down and follow the line! Every year, 800,000 people come to the Rose Parade! And millions more around the world watch on tv! With so many people lining up on Colorado Blvd, you definitely need a game plan for this awesome New Years Day destination! There are several ways to see the parade: Locals know it's Rose Parade time of year when lots of bleachers start to appear all down Colorado Blvd! You can purchase tickets, and sit in the bleachers, for an awesome view of the parade! Camp out on Colorado Blvd overnight! That's right! Thousands of people bring, tents, blankets, portable fire pits, and pretty much half their houses, and camp out overnight along the parade route! It is one super big New Years Eve party! To pass the time, campers love to throw marshmallows at the passing cars! And a lot of Silly String is flying too! Hot tip: if you cruise the Blvd and join the party (a fun thing to do New Years Eve) stay in the inside lane! You get a lot less mess on your car! Go to the parade route early New Years morning! Allow plenty of time to find parking. And be ready to walk about 6 blocks to the parade! Our hot tip: go to the end of the parade route! The parade doesn't arrive there until about 9:00, which gives you a little extra time. People will be standing about 6 deep, all along the route. Not only are they really tasty, they are almost too fun, cute, and beautiful to eat! ...Almost! And at the holidays, Disneyland kicks treats up to a whole new level! Featuring caramel apples, cookies, cake pops, cupcakes, and so much more! And to go with your treat, Disneyland has the best hot cocoa! So Chrismasy! And Starbucks is right in the park too! Deb's favorite? A Mickey decorated rice crispy, topped with brulee brown sugar!!! It was sooo good! Tip 1: The Candy Palace on Main Street is a must see! They have big windows, and you can watch them making all kinds of awesome candy! This is a little known secret of Disneyland! The Candy Palace makes big, beautiful candycanes! If you want to buy a candycane, be at the park when it opens. Go straight to Candy Palace and get a Candycane Ticket. The candycanes are such a hot item, that the tickets go really fast! Tip 2: Disneyland is famous for their super fun popcorn buckets! Many people collect them! This years holiday popcorn bucket is Mickey putting presents under the Christmas Tree! Disneyland is such a fun place to Christmas shop! The stores are all decorated so cute and beautiful for the holidays! They are an experience in themselves! The Happiest Holiday decorations on Earth! The 12 Days of Cali Christmas! Day 11! Our tour of Disneyland at the holidays continues, with a look at some of the awesome, fun, and beautiful holiday decorations that adorn every square inch of the park! Well, ok, not every square inch, there was no Holiday decor in Star Wars Land, Galaxy's Edge. We think they are trying to keep it looking as close to the movies as possible. But other than that, there are decorations everywhere! And the holiday decorations are themed to each land that you are in! Always beautiful, festive, and dressed for Mardi Gras, New Orleans square is extra beautiful this time of year! And you can see from our photos, the skippers at Jungle Cruise were having a bit of trouble with their tree this year! One of the most fun things to do at Disneyland is to get your picture taken with the Disney characters! At the holidays the characters are dressed in their Christmas finest! They are so cute, and entertain the crowd and photo op at the same time! These photo make for such great memories! What's this? What's this? Haunted Mansion Holiday! Featuring The Nightmare Before Christmas! The 12 Days of Cali Christmas! Day 11! The party at the Haunted Mansion has been going on since 1969! Walt Disney personally oversaw the creation of this ride! For those that may not have experienced the ride yet, you take a tour through a very haunted mansion! Led by your ghost host, you meet the very lively spirits that call the mansion home! From the room with no windows and no doors that stretches, to the grave yard where friendly ghost come out to socialize, the Haunted Mansion is a Disneyland icon and must see on your Disneyland list! But be careful, a ghost may follow you home! And just when you thought it couldn't get any better. It does!!! Every year, from October through January the Haunted Mansion is transformed into Haunted Mansion Holiday! A group of guests featuring Jack Skellington, Sally, Zero, and the rest of the Nightmare Before Christmas gang move in and take over the entire mansion!!! The mansion is totally transformed! The Disneyland Imagineeers have really outdone themselves! The holiday version of the Haunted Mansion is a totally different experience than the regular version! Different music, decorations, and story line! It is really beautiful and fun, inside and out! And for Nightmare Before Christmas fans, there is a store featuring fun merchandise, right by the mansion! But, did you know It's A Small World was actually originally an attraction for the 1964 New York World's Fair before being permanently moved to Disneyland? The Happiest Holiday on Earth! Swipe to see fireworks and snow videos! Turn the sound on! The 12 Days of Cali Christmas! Day 11! Ok Fun Seekers! If you have been to Disneyland, you know it is hard to top! But there is one thing better than Disneyland. Disneyland at Christmas! Beautiful every day of the year, and the centerpiece of the Happiest Place on Earth, the castle is totally transformed with thousands of twinkling lights at the holidays! You must see it at night! It is breathtaking! Every night, weather conditions permitting, the holiday fireworks and snow show goes off with the castle as the centerpiece! Although you can view the fireworks from all over Disneyland, the best spot is in front of the castle! Our hot tip 1: stand as close to the castle as possible and to the right of the castle. There is a large tree on the left that blocks some of the view of the fireworks. Our Hot tip 2: Get to the waiting area in front of the castle as early as possible. People will start lining up for the show a couple of hours early. Take turns waiting, so you can still enjoy time in the park. The show is so awesome, exciting, and fun, it is worth the wait! Our hot tip 3: Be sure to stay to the very end! There will be a pause after the fireworks show is over. Then music starts again and snow falls in front of the castle and all down mainstreet! So much fun! Our hot tip 4: Disneyland makes really good hot cocoa! We totally recommend it! It can be cool while you are standing waiting for the show, and this will warm you right up! Ahoy Fun Seekers! Come along on a California Christmas Cruise! 12 Days of Cali Christmas! Day 7! The famous Newport Beach Christmas Boat Parade, has been a tradition in So Cal since 1908! Boats decked out in tons of Chrismas lights and decorations cruise the harbor between Newport Beach and Balboa Island, in a super fun parade! There are a couple of ways to view the parade! Get out on the water! You can take a cruise on a beautiful party boat! These boats will take you around the harbor to see the parade, and the million dollar homes along the shore, eleboratly decorated for Christmas! Watch from shore! There are great viewing spots all along the peninsula! You can make reservations at one of the many waterfront restaurants, and watch the parade and dine at the same time! The big Lido Parking structure is right next to the marina! Right across the street are restaurants with great views of the marina and parade! Or stand and watch from their long dock! There is a park halfway down the peninsula with great views too! People were taking picnics here! I was on a dock, at the boardwalk, right next to the Balboa Ferry Landing! Beach parking was just 2 short blocks away! Our Tips: Weekends are crowded, so I went on a week night. I was able to find parking pretty easily. It is best to get there early. The parade time is 3 hours long, and the parade cruises the entire huge harbor. So you might have to wait quite a while to see the parade go by your spot, if you are on land. So plan to hang out, and make a night of it! It gets cold down by the water at night, so bundle up! And be sure to stop by the free photo op booth near the ferris wheel, at the Ferry Landing! A whale of a good time! And it's free!! The 12 Days of Cali Christmas! Day 6! Here in So Cal a popular destination for shopping, dining, and beautiful ocean views, is Dana Point! Dana Point is in Orange County, California and features Doheny State Beach with awesome beach side campgrounds! Fantastic restaurants nestled on cliff sides with stunning ocean views! And the harbor, with shopping, dining, and views of the many boats and yachts! At Christmas time the harbor is transformed into a winter wonderland with thousands of twinkling lights! This year the harbor walk is featuring adorable whales wearing Santa hats! And you can stand inside a whale and take your picture! I loved this! Everyone else did too! People were lining up for this unique holiday photo! I stood so you could see the whole whale from the side! Others were standing way inside the whale and take a photo looking into the whales mouth! The other super fun photo op this year is the Merry Kiss Me tunnel! Everyone wanted to photo op here! Especially couples! It was adorable! Seeing couples kssing under the mistletoe!!! Friends, families, and people with pets were photo oping here too! Everyone was kissing! Just so much fun! The photos don't do this beautiful light display justice. You have to experience the twinkling lights, the bright colors, the cool crisp ocean air, while you sip hot cocoa and enjoy tasty treats from the sea side bakery! The Dana Point Boat Parade takes place here too! On parade day, and on weekends, it is really crowded and hard to find parking. So our hot tip: I went on a weekday, the day after the parade! It was not crowded and I pulled right into one of the many available parking spots! Traveling during the holidays can be a challenge, to say the least! Follow us @thefunseekers So here are a few tips on traveling as smoothly as possible this holiday season. 1. PLAN AHEAD! Get a game plan. Schedule what you need to do to get ready. Make a list. This will make getting ready so much easier. 2. If flying get to the airport early. Give yourself plenty of time to get checked in and get through security. During the holidays the normal hour for domestic flights might not be enough time with all the other people traveling. So give yourself extra time. 3. Go to your destination as far in advance as possible ahead of the holiday. Every extra day in advance of the holiday that you travel will reduce the number of other holiday travelers. 4. If driving also give yourself extra time. Get wild this Christmas! The 12 Days of Cali Christmas! Our top picks for best holiday Destinations in Southern California!!!! Day 1 LA Zoo Lights! Take a stroll through the LA Zoo at night! This light display is huge!!! It took us all evening to see it all! The zoo light display is unique because it features lit up animals of all kinds! You know how much we love animals, so we loved it! Some of our favs were the swinging monkeys! And the elephants! They projected Christmas images onto 2 huge elephant statues, which were synced to music! So fun! There are really large displays of lights all over the zoo! Some of our favorites are the Disco ball forest! And the twinkle light tunnel! And the LA Zoo has the Reindeer Romp! You can see real reindeer! And there are fun reindeer themed activities too! The reindeer were sleeping when we saw them! Awww! So sweet! We also saw a fun laser and water show! It was cool the night we were there, so be sure to bring a jacket! We picked up some hot cocoa at one of the food stands too! Festive and warming! Zoo Lights is a great place to celebrate the holidays! Be advised: Almost all the animals were in for the night, and not available for viewing. However, the reptile house was open, and we saw swans and a couple of other animals, including reindeer at night. So here is our hot tip: We spent the daylight hours enjoying the animals at the zoo and then left to go have dinner. Then we came back to enjoy the lights! We wish photographs could capture the lights better! What a beautiful experience! Throughout the park there were so many different light displays to enjoy! So many colors and textures created by the lights! Or take a mule ride around the rim!!! Fun Facts: Mules combine the sure-footedness of a burro, with the larger size and strength of a horse! Mules have been carrying canyon visitors since 1887! No visitors to the Grand Canyon have died riding a mule! The mule ride to the bottom of the Grand Canyon is 10 miles, and takes about 5 1/2 hours! There are several rest stops along the way! And once you get to the bottom, you get to stay overnight at Phantom Ranch, and enjoy being in the canyon! The mule ride around the rim of the Grand Canyon is 2 hours, and offers a fun new way to enjoy the stunning views! (We have heard that if you don't ride often, you can be sore after a ride.) We have not tried this yet, but riding the Grand Canyon mules is on our "must experience it" adventures list, the next time we visit! It sounds like so much fun! Within Grand Canyon National Park itself, the Colorado River flows for 277 miles! This gives our adventure Fun Seekers lots of space to go river rafting! There are several companies that offer white water rafting trips down the Colorado River through the Grand Canyon! You can even take a several day trip, and camp along the banks of the river at night, and sleep under the stars! Rafting the Colorado is an awesome way to get down into the Grand Canyon and explore! This sounds like so much fun, and is on our "must try" adventure list! More fun facts! The Colorado River flows at an average speed of four miles per hour. And the river's average width is 300 feet across. The best place we found to view the Colorado River from the rim, was by taking one of the Grand Canyon bus shuttles toward Hermit's Rest. You can view the river from the stops along this route! Weather you get in the Colorado River and raft, or view it from the Grand Canyon rim, it is a beautiful, breathtaking, exciting, wonder of nature! When we saw the Colorado River, surrounded by the vast red rocks of the Grand Canyon, we both just stood for a while and enjoyed the awesomeness! it is overwhelming! See Elk up close!!! Follow @thefunseekers Elk are beautiful creatures! They can weigh up to 730 lbs and live up to 13 years! Elk call the Grand Canyon home! We saw Elk numerous times on all out trips to the Grand Canyon! Where is the best place to spot them? Grand Canyon Village! We saw Elk right outside our room, walking down the street, and most often hanging out right near the Grand Canyon Village shops and restaurants! It is exciting and breathtaking to see the Elk up close, roaming free! An experience we will never forget! But be sure not to get too close! Here is what the Grand Canyon has to say: Elk are one of the most dangerous animals in Grand Canyon National Park. They are not usually aggressive, but will defend themselves if people get too close. And Elk are more aggressive during rutting season. Please do not approach elk, and view them from at least 100 feet (30 m). We are always respectful of all wild animals and keep our distance. We use zoom on our cameras, and still get great pictures! And we always have the best experiences! The Grand Canyon is not only home to Elk, a big list of animals, birds, and reptiles live here too! What is it like to hike the Grand Canyon? Watch to find out! Follow @thefunseekers Bright Angel Trail is one of several famous Grand Canyon trails! This trail is about 4 feel wide in most places! It is wide enough that we did feel safe. But once we were on it, with the massive canyon walls above and below us, the path began to feel a lot more narrow!!! Bright Angel Trail is 9.3 miles long, and takes most people 4-5 hours to hike it down to the bottom of the Grand Canyon! There are a few bathrooms along the way, but they are miles apart, so they say to plan accordingly! Most of the time you hike single file, to allow for other hikers coming the other direction to pass by. And this is the same trail the mule trains take, so occasionally you may need to move to the side nearest the canyon wall, to allow the mules to pass! As you hike down into the canyon, the trail is designed so that you do not descend at a steep incline. But it is more of an incline than it feels like. So be aware. If you are not hiking all the way to the bottom, before you start to feel tired head back up. You find out just how steep the incline really is, when you start back up. It takes a lot more energy going up than down!!! If you hike the entire Bright Angel Trail, you reach the bottom of the Grand Canyon and the Colorado River!!! And you can stay at Phantom Ranch overnight! Be sure to book really early, the ranch is very popular! We had the best time hiking the Grand Canyon! You can purchase them at the Grand Canyon gift shops. And after your hike, you have a cool souvenier! 3. Don't forget water! Here is a important tip: they do not sell bottled water anywhere at the Grand Canyon!!! You have 2 options for water: Bring your own bottled water with you. Or bring with you, or purchase at the gift shop, a water bottle container. You can fill it at the many water bottle filling stations around the Grand Canyon Village! 4. Dress in layers according to the season you visit. And don't forget sun screen! 5. Be sure to pay attention! It is easy to get distracted by the awesomness of the Grand Canyon! Picture taking can be a distraction too! The trails are not wide, and there are no rails between you and the cliff edges! So be aware of how close you are to the edge at all times, and respect warning signs. Tragedies have occurred here. 6. Watch for wildlife! You will see a variety of birds flying over head and in the trees! Many creatures call the Grand Canyon home, especially elk, squirrels, and bunnies! They are everywhere! So be on the look out! It is such a special treat when you spot one!! 7. Bright Angel Trail is our favorite trail at the Grand Canyon! Here's why: The trailhead is right at Grand Canyon Village! Too overwhelming. The mind can't take it all in. Not all at once. Not in one visit. We've all seen so many images of the Grand Canyon. Photos. Video. Film. They can't begin to do it justice. The most beautiful image you've ever seen of the Grand Canyon isn't as beautiful as it is. Look at it. Look away and then look back. It's changed. The light. The angle of the sun. The clouds. There is no better way to get to the Grand Canyon than by train, Fun Seekers! We HIGHLY recommend taking the train from Williams to the Canyon! It was a wonderful experience! And you do not need a car at the Grand Canyon. There are buses to take you were you want to go! You don't have to hassle with parking and it helps to reduce traffic in the park! We never once said "wish we had a car." As you swipe through the pictures you will see Debbie and my mom on the lift to get into the train. The train is accessable with the exception of the observation deck where we sat. The first picture is of the stairs to the observation deck. Mom was able to climb the stairs but others with different limitations might not. Just be aware. They offered lovely snacks to enjoy during the ride. We were also entertained by a singing cowboy that was very good. And, of course, the beautiful scenery of the country between Williams and the Canyon! Then, suddenly the train was set upon by robbers! What a fright! As you can see we were able to get some photos of them outside the train and some close ups of the one that robbed us! Despite us and the other terrified passengers taking many photos of these scoundrels they have yet to be apprehended! You can see how scared we were by this harrowing experience! 😉😁😂 The Grand Canyon Railway is so much fun! All aboard Fun Seekers! The Grand Canyon Railway and Hotel! In Williams we boarded a train, and took a two hour ride through beautiful Arizona to the Grand Canyon!!! This was such a fun family and friends adventure! You can totally see in our photos how much fun we all had! There is a big hotel right at the Grand Canyon Railway! We stayed here and it was awesome! The hotel offers bundled packages that include your stay at the hotel, the train ride to and from the Grand Canyon, breakfast buffet, and a Cowboy Show! The hotel is beautiful! In the lobby are big couches next to a fireplace, where you can sit and relax! The rooms are clean and comfortable! Very modern decor with a fun railroad twist! At the hotel is the Grand Canyon Depot Cafe! This restaurant is a buffet, and offers breakfast, lunch, and dinner. The food here was ok. What is cool about the Cafe, is that it feels like you are in a mountain lodge! Very cozy! Lots of train decor, including a big model train running around the whole restaurant! So fun! If you look close at our picture, you can see the train! The hotel also offers two really fun gift shops! Before you board the train, be sure to see the Cowboy Show! It was awesome, and funny too! The audience laughed a lot! On the way in to the show, an outlaw stopped me and asked me about my jewelry!!! 😆 To much fun! And if you love photo ops like we do, there are lots of awesome and fun ones here! We got to take pictures with the Cowboys from the stunt show! We took photos of and with beautiful, cool, trains! Debbie says all of Arizona is haunted but on the Red Garter website they say the reports of Inn's resident "ghost" Eve are "sometimes exaggerated." 🤔 The Red Garter Inn is a beautifully restored 1897 Victorian Romanesque two story building that was originally a brothel. An old haunted brothel! How fun is that!? When you swipe through the pictures you will see a picture of the "stairway to heaven" which the cowboys climbed to spend time with the "working girls" in the rooms upstairs. You will also see a box of goodies in the pictures. Among the snacks in each room, there are Milano cookies for the guests to enjoy! Yummy! The Red Garter Inn is located in the historic district of Williams, AZ. There is much entertainment near by. Restaurants, shopping, pubs and galleries are just steps away! And if you are planning on heading to the Grand Canyon you are also very close to the Grand Canyon Railway for a great ride on the historic train! Our cabooses stayed in a caboose!!! Follow @thefunseekers Williams, is the jumping off point for the Grand Canyon! And if you are looking for a super fun place to stay in Williams, check out the Canyon Motel and RV Park!!! At the Canyon Motel, you can stay in a real 1929 Santa Fe train caboose!!! There are 2 to choose from! Donalee and I stayed in one of the cabooses, and it was sooo much fun! Donalee had a room with a queen size bed, and I had a room with queen bunk beds! There was a very tiny bathroom in the caboose. The beds were comfortable, and the rooms were clean. There were funny train signs on the walls too! It was not luxury accommodations, but the fun factor more than made up for it! Outside the caboose, is a platform patio, where you can sit and relax and enjoy the beautiful view of the forest and mountains of Williams! And elk and deer often wander by! The Canyon Motel also offers a green 1959 Pullman classic train car that has been made into several different motel rooms! They also have cottage style rooms, RV and tent camping sites, an indoor pool, fire rings, bbq's, picnic areas, a cute gift shop, and more! The canyon Motel office building was built in 1939 along historic Route 66! It is made from flagstone harvested right on the property! So cool! It was such a fun and unique experience to get to stay in a train caboose!!! Besides bears there are other animals at Bearizona! Follow us at @thefunseekers As we are concerned for the well being of animals kept in captivity we asked where Bearizona got their animals from before visiting. We were happy to find out that while they used to breed animals that is no longer the case and they now rescue the animals from situations where they animals can no longer be released into the wild. Due to injury, health concerns, behavioral issues or other reasons that may cause these animals to not be able to live free they have a lovely place to live out their lives. Much better than the alternative. The enclosures are large to massive! Some are many acres! The jaguars had a large enclosure but this one was conveniently taking a nap by the glass wall. The pictured lake is adjacent to where the bison were feeding to help give you an idea how large and lovely the enclosures are. Bear hugs! 💜 Follow @thefunseekers Words cannot Express how much Donalee and I enjoyed visiting the bears at Bearizona! They are beautiful, strong, intelligent, cute, awesome creatures! We could have watched them for days! So much fun to see them up close, in their natural habitat! We saw them playing, sleeping, eating, walking around, drinking, and one even came right up to the car! Here is our tip! Be sure to clean your car windows before you drive through Bearizona. You must keep your windows rolled up, so you will be taking pictures through the glass. It was raining when we arrived at Bearizona. We got lucky and the rain stopped while we drove through the animal habiats, and it started raining again right when we were leaving! You can see some rain here and there on the glass, but we still got some great shots of the bears! We love these two! They are awesome! One of the most beautiful, exciting, special, things we have ever been blessed to see!!! Follow @thefunseekers Bearizona!!! Located in the beautiful pine forest of Williams, Arizona is this awesome drive through wildlife park! Bearizona is home to lots of Noth American animals! (See our last post for a list of animals that call Bearizona home!) In addition to the drive through, Bearizona also has Fort Bearizona, a zoo like setting with more animals. And a bird's of prey show, keeper chats, and a bus tour! The highlight for us was seeing the black bears! Not all black bears are actually black as some of them are blue-black, brown, cinnamon, dark brown or even white! They are excellent swimmers and can swim for about 1.5 miles in fresh water! Black Bears can live to be 20 years in the wild, and 30 years in captivity. And they can be found in 49 of the 50 states across the U.S! As we drove through Bearizona we came to the Jr Black Bear area, where we saw teenage bears, and we drove through the adult black bear area where these big, beautiful, bears live! We could not believe this amazing moment of play happened right in front of our car! It was so exciting! We were in awe! Bearizona Drive Through Wildlife Park!!! Follow @thefunseekers For all our animal lover Fun Seekers, this one is a must see!!! Bearizona in Williams, Arizona!!! This is sooo much fun! You drive in your car through this Wildlife Park! Keep your doors locked and windows rolled up! You will be driving right past Rocky Mountain Goats, Alaskan Dall Sheep, Rocky Mountain Elk, Mule Deer, American Burros, Alaskan Tundra Wolves, Artic Wolves, White Bison, Brown Bison, Big Horn Sheep, and Black Bears and Jr Black Bears!!!! Donalee and I love animals and are always concerned about their well being. Before we went to Bearizona, we called and asked where the bears come from. We were told that Bearizona did breed the bears for a short time in the beginning, but that they do not breed the bears anymore and they have not for a very long time, and that 80% of the bears are rescues. We were very happy to hear this. It is wonderful that bears that cannot be released into the wild for a variety of reasons, have a wonderful place to go and live. What we like about Bearizona is that all the animals in the drive through have tons of room to run, play, and live! Bearizona is approximately 160 acres. Visitors drive through more than three miles of Ponderosa Pine Forest on a winding path to view the animals in natural habitats! We got to see all the animals up close! It was awesome! More animals are exhibited in Fort Bearizona, a 20 acre walk-thru area, along winding paths which is more of a "zoo" type setting. We did not walk through Fort Bearizona. We hope to do that on our next trip. From what we could see, the animals seemed very well cared for. And all the workers we very nice and friendly and really seemed to care about the animals! We love to stop and see as many as we can on our road trips! The best source we have found for these hidden gems, is a great website called roadsideamerica.com! Camp Verde, Arizona is not only home to Montezuma Castle National Monument, it is also home to The Worlds Largest Kokopelli!!! Ok, how fun is that!!! (Check out our last post for more on Montezuma Castle!) Kokopelli is one of the most intriguing and widespread images surviving from ancient native American Indian mythology, and is a prominent figure in Indian legends! The figure represents a mischievous trickster or the Minstrel, spirit of music! Kokopelli is considered a symbol of fertility who brought well-being to the people, assuring success in hunting, planting and growing crops, and human conception! You will find Kokopelli everywhere in Arizona! You can see it depicted in ancient Indian hieroglyphs! And you will find it on signs, t-shirts and souvenirs, art, and more! When you visit Camp Verde, be sure to make a quick roadside stop at The Worlds Largest Kokopelli! There is just nothing like red rocks covered in snow! Follow us @thefunseekers We love Sedona but an already beautiful place is transformed into pure magic by just a little bit of snow! I have loved every trip we have made to Sedona but our day in the snow was simply amazing! One of the most stunning places on Earth was just that much better! We did some hiking. Got the car stuck in some ice. Managed to get the car off of and out of the ice. Look, I grew up in southern California and have lived the second half of my life in southern Arizona. The 11 years I spent in Tennessee served me well getting the car out of ice on a steep hill! There isn't a lot of snow in Nashville but ice storms are a pretty common occurrence there! I did it! We had a great lunch on the patio at a Mexican restaurant. And if you're thinking that sounds nuts in the snow well, it wasn't very cold by the afternoon! The snow was melting and with the sun reflecting off of what was left made it quite comfortable! We even enjoyed a margarita! Whatever the weather Sedona never disappoints! This is the most beautiful natural rock formation I have ever seen! When I am in the presence of Cathedral rock, I feel a sense of it's power and it's peace! It is just so beautiful! Pictures don't do it justice, you have to see it in person to really take in it's massive size, stunning colors, and breathtaking shape! Cathedral Rock is one of the most photographed sites in Arizona! And that's saying a lot, for a state that is home to the Grand Canyon! You can take a short hike with a steep ascent to the middle of Cathedral Rock! And Cathedral Rock also is a vortex area! So be sure to feel the vortex! Get some red dirt on your boots! Debbie and Donalee a long time ago, on our first trip! Follow @thefunseekers Hiking Sedona! Hiking is a super fun thing to do in Sedona! Whether you are an advanced hiker, or a beginner like us, there are trails for all skill levels! Getting out and walking the trails, is such an awesome way to see Sedona! Why I love hiking in Sedona is the super fresh air, the beauty of Sedona surrounding you, and seeing all the details of nature up close! Donalee and I have been best friends since high school! On our very first trip together, we went to Sedona and hiked Boynton Canyon! This is one of the many reasons Sedona has a special place in our hearts! Boynton Canyon Trail is a stunning hike through a picturesque canyon that moves you through a varied landscape! The real gem of this trail is found in the final 1/3 of the hike, as you enter a high forest with large pines, oaks and even alligator junipers! And you can feel the vortex here! When hiking in Sedona, we recommend good walking shoes or hiking boots, and don't forget sunscreen and bottled water! And definitely be ready to take pictures! There are photo ops everywhere! You won't even be able to decide what to point your camera at, because it is all just so stunning! There is tons of great information and tips on Google about all the awesome hiking trails in Sedona! Oak Creek in Sedona is a beautiful place to cool off in the heat of summer! We have changed our name to @thefunseekers from @destinations.debbie.donalee If you are following us already, great! If not, please follow us to see all our fun adventures! While Sedona is at a higher elevation and in northern Arizona it still gets pretty hot in the summer. There are many locations along Oak Creek where you can take a swim to cool off! The lovely tree lined banks of the river make for a cooler hiking destination or you can also have some water fun at Slide Rock. A natural rock "slide" water fall that you ride down into the pool of water below. But Oak Creek is great any time of year! In the winter there might be a dusting of snow that make an already beautiful place simply enchanting. In spring the place comes alive with many plants blooming in a variety of colors. Chapel built into the rocks!!! We changed our name to @thefunseekers, from @destinations.debbie.donalee. It's us! Just a new name! Follow us @thefunseekers Chapel of the Holy Cross! The chapel is built right into the red rock cliffs of Sedona! This architecture is such a beautiful site to see! And the chapel is open every day! It is always busy! There are lots of people going in and out of the chapel all the time. Some are there to site see and take pictures. Others are there to participate in a spiritual way. I went in and sat for a while and enjoyed the chapels beauty and said a prayer too. There are red candles that you can light in memory of loved ones! I lit 2 for my mom and dad. Such a special moment. Outside, the chapel is surrounded by a courtyard, a beautiful little garden, and some of the most red, rock formations I have ever seen! You can sit on benches and enjoy the courtyard and garden. And because the chapel is at the top of the hill, you can see fantastic views of Sedona! Donalee and I love to go to Sedona!
