Dundee Rep have today announced that following an acclaimed run at 2023’s Edinburgh Fringe Festival their must-see production, NO LOVE SONGS will transfer to London’s Southwark Playhouse Elephant this June. The five star hit musical is the brainchild of the lead singer of Mercury Prize nominated Scottish indie band, The View’s Kyle Falconer and his partner Laura Wilde, co-written with Johnny McKnight. Reimagined live on stage in this unique and urgent gig theatre show, No Love Songs features hits from Kyle’s 2021 solo album, No Love Songs For Laura, such as Stress Ball and Mother. The production is co-directed by Dundee Rep’s Artistic Director, Andrew Panton, and Associate Director Tashi Gore telling a personal story of love and new parenthood, dealing with the subject of post-natal depression. This original new musical follows Lana and Jessie as they learn to navigate the unique challenges of their new lives as parents. NO LOVE SONGS also features musical direction & arrangements by Gavin Whitworth, lighting design by Grant Anderson, sound design by Ritchie Young, set design stylist Leila Kalbassi and costume design stylist Cate Mackie. NO LOVE SONGS was created from an original idea by Kyle Falconer and Laura Wild,with songs by Kyle Falconer and a book by Laura Wilde and Johnny McKnight. Dundee Rep and Scottish Dance Theatre are proud to present The Institute of Lost Things; a performance project based in Claypotts Castle Primary school! 🔎 A group of P3 pupils at the Dundee primary school have been enrolled as newly trained ‘Keepers’ entrusted with the task of caring for things that have been lost and exploring their significance. Together they examine objects, discover histories and share stories as they try to work out what to hold onto and what can be left behind. The project with Claypotts Castle Primary which began earlier this year is an intensive, three-month creative residency. Co-working with pupils and teachers at the school located in the East End of Dundee, the project aims to deliver the benefit of arts, music and dance culminating in a final piece of original Physical Theatre to be performed before peers, family, friends and the local community. The residency has been led by two highly experienced creative practitioners; Amanda Lowson leading on drama and John Ross leading on dance. The first week of our international musical theatre residency went brilliantly! 🤩 The cohort from Scotland to the US to India have settled into the beautiful surroundings of Cove Park and have enjoyed workshops with our resident dramaturg Jeanie O’Hare covering elements of musical theatre dramaturgy, Musical Supervisor James Mckeon, exploring the role of the music department on large-scale musicals and Producer Rashad Chambers on the role of the producer spanning commercial and not-for-profit sectors.🎶 Tony award-winning Director John Doyle also joined us for an evening sharing salon and Q+A - it was quite a first week! It was an honour to attend the press night for the new production of Jekyll and Hyde now running at Edinburgh Lyceum Theatre. 🌟 Starring actual National Treasure Forbes Masson - I honestly would've gone to see any play with him in. His recent turn in 'The Crown' as The Queen's photographer was incredible and proved (as if we need any more proof!) just what a stellar talent he is. 🛩 Does anyone else remember 90s Scottish sitcom 'The High Life', based at Prestwick Airport with Forbes and his comedy partner Alan Cumming (Victor and Barry!) I loved that there was something on TV set at the airport just down the road from me 😁 I'd love to watch that series again. Jekyll & Hyde is a new one-person play from brilliant Scottish playwright Gary McNair. It was previously staged at Reading Rep theatre with a different actor. 🎭 This new production with Forbes Masson plays at the Royal Lyceum Theatre in Edinburgh from 13 - 27 January 2024 (tickets from £14). John Byrne's Writer's Cramp with Brian Pettifer as Francis Seneca McDade and Andy Gray as Mrs Ripper, his landlady. The theatre production at the Edinburgh Fringe in 1977 is recounted as "one of the most deliriously funny evenings I have experienced in the theatre" by Michael Coveney in today's Guardian obituary. As there were no seats, the critic sat under one. "Laughing became stressful, I was on the floor". John's scripts were highly literate. The language was funny. The interactions between characters were funny. The situations were funny too. I loved working with him. The post PECHA-KUCHA glow ♥️ Holy-moly what a lovely and warm and inspiring and funny and vibrant night. I feel so grateful to have gotten to see so many amazing speakers, and to finish off the night with "Bucket of Hope (a Way to Belonging)" a "poetation" I wrote especially for the night. And to get to bring fellow big bird @johnnythreshold to do his magical improvised music to accompany the words 🖤 Thank-you so much for the kind words & big smiles, & the people who told me they cried (at least 7) - you know I love Big Feelings. Thankyou for the reminders that the lil mistakes and misspeaks I made are never as hugely obvious as I think they are. Thankyou @creative_dundee for creating a beautiful evening and for having me be a part of it, such a huge highlight of my life and so meaningful.
