It was even more delightful than I had imagined it would be. Last night was an utter joy to share my story with a full house in the great hall of the Texas Science & Natural History Museum, under the imposing Quetzalcoatlus and T-Rex. Thank you to the fabulous Chris Kirk for joining me and for sharing your vast knowledge about my grandfather and fossil primates. Thank you to everyone at the museum, including Dr. Pamela Owen, Carolyn Connerat, Monte Monreal, and Anne Hebert for making this event happen. Thank you to everyone who joined us last night for our special free program with Sarah Wilson @swilsonfoto, photographer, artist and author of “DIG: Notes on Field and Family”. Sarah joined UT professor of biological anthropology Dr. Chris Kirk in conversation, and both were introduced by paleontologist Dr. Pamela Owen, associate director of the museum. Sarah explained her grandfather's life's work as a paleontologist and founder of the Vertebrate Paleontology Laboratory in @txgeosciences. His collection of faded Kodachrome slides led Sarah to follow the same paths he once took through the West Texas desert, digging for 40 million-year-old fossils and searching for answers to mysteries of Deep Time, and our place within it. We were happy to see so many museum members, old friends and new faces at this event! Be sure to join our email list at sciencemuseum.utexas.edu to learn about future free public programs. We’re bringing back #FossilFridays! Here is a breathtaking fossil softshell turtle (Axestemys byssinus) from the famous Green River Formation in Wyoming, USA. This formation has some of the best preserved turtles, giving us a snapshot peek into their life, millions of years ago. This beautiful turtle spans a jaw-dropping 6 feet long and is likely the largest specimen of its type discovered in this important locality. Softshell turtles today as well are important apex predators in the aquatic systems they thrive in, and such fossil records are important reminders of their importance in maintaining healthy ecosystems. 🇬🇧 I’m quite sure I’ve said it before, and I’m quite sure I’ll say it again: I love photographing damaged diatoms. There seems to be more happening in the picture. And - again - when working with actual samples, you very rarely see intact specimens. Our today’s diatom is Entogoniopsis polycistinora from the Eocene sediments of the Bay of Biscay. #Leptictidium (illustrated here by Mauricio Anton) was a unique #mammal genus with a short trunk and long hindlegs, once widespread throughout Eocene Europe. Its wider order, the Leptictida, had its origin all the way back in the Cretaceous when they descended from eutherians closely related to true placental mammals. Among modern animals it is perhaps most comparable to an elephant shrew or a bandicoot. Traditionally reconstructed as a hopping animal similar to a kangaroo or jerboa, more recent work suggests that, uniquely among mammals, it actually walked on its digitigrade feet, one foot in front of the other, more like a small theropod dinosaur. Unfortunately, these fascinating animals became extinct at the beginning of the Oligocene. During this transition, the Turgai Sea closed and Europe became connected to Asia, resulting in an event called the Grande Coupure by Swiss paleontologist Hans Georg Stehlin. Similar to the later Great American Interchange, this resulted in an invasion of more familiar animals into the continent and the extinction of more archaic native groups such as Lepi here. At the same time, a global change in climate diminished the rainforest habitats that these animals lived in. Among the victims were also the camel-like anoplotheres and xiphodontids as well as Europe‘s native primates. It is interesting to think what could have become of Leptictidium had it survived and adapted to the open grasslands of the Oligocene. Maybe it could have become the northern hemisphere‘s equivalent to kangaroos or the mammals‘ answer to ratites and ornithomimosaurs. #paleontology #fossil #fossils #extinctanimal #extinction #extinctmammal #eocene #oligocene #cretaceous #mauricioanton #paleoart #paleoartist #europe #swisspaleontology #art #animals #prehistory #prehistoric #kangaroo #jerboa #dinosaur #dinosaurs #theropod #speculative_evolution #messel #messelpit #bandicoot #crashbandicoot

- —————————————————- #dinosaurios #dinosaur #dinosaurs #andrewsarchus #mamiferos #mamiferosprehistoricos #wild #eocene #mongolia #diorama #collectaanimals #photography #photooftheday #picoftheday #toyphotography #dinosaurtoyphotography #collector #canonphotography #canon #paleontology #paleontologia #art #photoart #extinctanimals #megafauna #jurassicworld #jurassicpark #walkingwithbeasts

Another #paleostream sketch Vasuki indicus is a new giant snake from the Eocene of India. It's a madtsoiid and potentially rivaled or even overtook Titanoboa as the largest snake. Just as with Ichthyotitan in my last post though: Take this with a grain of salt. This animal is known from just a few vertebrae, it's proportions aren't known! Non the less, if this animal had proportions like some other madtsoiids it could have been up to 15 m long. Interesting about madtsoiids is that their skull bones aren't as flexible as those of modern constrictor snakes. So the animal would probably not go for very large prey. The animals next to the snake here are basal sirenians. #paleoart #sciart #snake #eocene #vasuki #titanoboa #reptile #fossil #paleostream

Eocene landscape; Diatryma (Gastornis) praying on Hyracotherium by Richard Orr from the book A Closer Look at Prehistoric Mammals written by Beverly Halstead (1976). Gastornis were very large birds, and have traditionally been considered to be predators of small mammals (like seen here). However, several lines of evidence, including the lack of hooked claws in known Gastornis footprints and studies of their beak structure and isotopic signatures of their bones have caused scientists to reinterpret these birds as herbivores that probably fed on tough plant material and seeds. Hyracotherium were small, fox-sized animals used to be considered to be the earliest known member of Equidae (horses and relatives) before the type species, H. leporinum, was reclassified as a palaeothere, a family basal to both horses and brontotheres. __________________________________________ #vintagepaleoart #paleoart #palaeoart #paleontology #palaeontology #prehistoric #vintagepaleoart #prehistoricmegafauna #megafauna #eocene #prehistoricanimals #gastornis #diatryma #hyracotherium #richardorr #beverlyhalstead

🇬🇧 I’ve spent hours going through slides of various samples from the famous fossil diatom deposit at Oamaru, New Zealand, looking for a complete specimen of this diatom, called Actinodiscus corolla. But working with diatoms is not all about perfect specimens; most of the time you see bits and pieces, because this is how the fossil record works: it generally breaks things, and only rarely leaves things intact. So - I still haven’t found what I’m looking for. Imagining Vasuki Indicus THEN and NOW, with the help of #Midjourney #AI. #Fossil remains of the massive #prehistoric snake, from 47 million years ago, were found by an @iitroorkee team in the #Panandhro lignite mine of #Kutch, #Gujarat in 2005. The findings were recently published in a peer-reviewed journal. At 11-15 metres, the snake is longer than anacondas and pythons, and appears to be as long as the longest known snake in our natural history - the #Titanoboa from Colombia. Vasuki would have lived in a marshy swamp near the coast at a time when the region had much higher temperatures. The tropical climate would have allowed it to grow so big. The snake species belonged to a geological period when India, Africa and South America were one landmass called #Gondwana. Two giant Vasuki meet and they're not particularly happy about it; they express their displeasure by inflating their forebodies and loudly hissing, as one does. :B Quick doodle inspired by the announcement of Vasuki, a new madtsoiid snake from the Eocene of India. It has been estimated at 11 to 15 meters long... that is longer even than Titanoboa! It probably would have been less heavy tho, as its vertebrae are slightly less massive. Think the comparison between a python and an anaconda; at same lengths, the anaconda can be almost twice as heavy! Vasuki may be thus the longest snake known from the fossil record, while still being slightly less massive than Titanoboa. But because we don´t have a full skeleton of either, this really is an educated guess at best! The study suggests Vasuki was a slow moving ambush hunter, but not necessarily aquatic like Titanoboa or anacondas; it may have been more akin to a gigantic python, lifestyle-wise. That being said, it definitely did in well watered environments, which can also be said for most giant snakes today. It is named after a mythical Naga from Indian myth. #vasuki #snake #serpent #monster #reptile #hodarinundu #paleoart #paleontology #cenozoic #eocene #dragon

Couple hours beach combing Thorness with my best buddy @scottcade13 this eve produced this treasure trove of oddities from around 30 off million years ago. Gastropods a plenty both empty and filled in. As well as some gorgeous other shell shapes i will cast and also try to identify using :- https://www.dmap.co.uk/fossils/ An amazing resource for the North side of the island. It was pretty dry for Turtle shell, we did both found a couple of bits, and tho i didn't find any verts like Scott, i did bag a bit of bone. It looks a little like a flipper, but i suspect its fish jaw or something similar. Ill keep investigating! Few geodes, gypsum/selenite crystals.in a big mustard lump. And a couple of questionable.. sausages. One has the look of bone, but the ends say iron nodule.. but it's very weird. The other is yellowy flint, but with a very visible helix, like the gastropods. So it is looking like coral, but again.. very weird. More investigations and research to do! #fossils #eocene #eocenefossil #adventure #strollwithmybuddy

#sosalgarrobo #algarrobo #elasmosaurus #elasmosaur #elasmosaurio #cretacico #cretaceous #eoceno #eocene #chile #5region #nautilus #mosasaurus #mosasaurio #fósiles #fossil #fossils #cretacic #cretacicbeach #seabirds #algarroboaldia #naturalsantuary #protectedspecies #protectedareas #vulnerablenativespecies #peñablanca #monumento #santuário

#premioitalianopaleoarte2023 𝗦𝗶𝗺𝗼𝗻𝗲 𝗭𝗼𝗰𝗰𝗮𝗻𝘁𝗲 "𝗧𝗿𝗼𝗽𝗵𝗶𝗰 𝗱𝗮𝗻𝗰𝗲" • Description: Egypt, about 37 million years ago. Off the coast, a large shoal of 𝘚𝘢𝘳𝘥𝘪𝘯𝘦𝘭𝘭𝘢 𝘴𝘱. congregated to take advantage of the high concentration of nutrients, formed in that coastal strip by the meeting of a warm sea current with a cold one. Where there is prey, of course, predators are not slow to arrive. A group of 𝘋𝘰𝘳𝘶𝘥𝘰𝘯 𝘢𝘵𝘳𝘰𝘹 is the first to rush in and attack the shoal. This is a familiar group of these cetaceans, consisting mainly of females and young specimens. Sharks are not slow in coming either. A pair of 𝘔𝘢𝘤𝘳𝘰𝘳𝘩𝘪𝘻𝘰𝘥𝘶𝘴 𝘱𝘳𝘢𝘦𝘤𝘶𝘳𝘴𝘰𝘳, eocene sharks of the lamnid family, joins the proto-dolphins, surely more sharks will arrive shortly thereafter. But here are the big guns appearing on the horizon, a large 𝘉𝘢𝘴𝘪𝘭𝘰𝘴𝘢𝘶𝘳𝘶𝘴 𝘪𝘴𝘪𝘴𝘴 approaching the group of animals. Taking advantage of the moment of distraction, the cetacean pounces on the group of 𝘚𝘢𝘳𝘥𝘪𝘯𝘦𝘭𝘭𝘢, but his goal is definitely more ambitious; he would like to get a shark or perhaps a young 𝘋𝘰𝘳𝘶𝘥𝘰𝘯 under his teeth. Hidden by the group of fish, the Basilosaurus, charges and slingshots into the shoal, catching a young 𝘋𝘰𝘳𝘶𝘥𝘰𝘯 by surprise, which it kills with a bite to the head. The sky's predators join: a large Pelagornithid and a flock of 𝘌𝘰𝘱𝘦𝘭𝘦𝘤𝘢𝘯𝘶𝘴 𝘢𝘦𝘨𝘺𝘱𝘵𝘪𝘢𝘤𝘶𝘴, resulting in a pulsating, primal, frenetic "trophic dance" as if straight out of Stravinsky's "Rite of Spring." This work depicts some of the most characteristic species of the Late Eocene paleobiota of Wadi al-Hitan, Egypt. There are also some inferences of the behavior and predation style of 𝘉𝘢𝘴𝘪𝘭𝘰𝘴𝘢𝘶𝘳𝘶𝘴 𝘪𝘴𝘪𝘴, based on some published studies on the subject. • Subjects: 𝘚𝘢𝘳𝘥𝘪𝘯𝘦𝘭𝘭𝘢 𝘴𝘱.; 𝘔𝘢𝘤𝘳𝘰𝘳𝘩𝘪𝘻𝘰𝘥𝘶𝘴 𝘱𝘳𝘢𝘦𝘤𝘶𝘳𝘰𝘴𝘳; 𝘌𝘰𝘱𝘦𝘭𝘦𝘤𝘢𝘯𝘶𝘴 𝘢𝘦𝘨𝘺𝘱𝘵𝘪𝘢𝘤𝘶𝘴; 𝘗𝘦𝘭𝘢𝘨𝘰𝘳𝘯𝘪𝘵𝘩𝘪𝘥𝘢𝘦 𝘴𝘱.; 𝘋𝘰𝘳𝘶𝘥𝘰𝘯 𝘢𝘵𝘳𝘰𝘹; 𝘉𝘢𝘴𝘪𝘭𝘰𝘴𝘢𝘶𝘳𝘶𝘴 𝘪𝘴𝘪𝘴 • Technique: digital painting (Adobe Photoshop) Follow 👉🏻 @zoctheartist #paleoarte #paleoart #art #digitalpainting #trophicdance #eocene
