. Happy Fossil Friday! Since it’s fully dry (I even used a bathroom hand dryer to expedite the process 🤣 ), I’m thrilled to present, what I hope is my first ever cetacean vertebra fossil from NJ. When I unearthed this tripmaker deep in the woods, of South Jersey my immediate reaction was “cetacean vertebra!!!” since it looked like some examples I have from MD and SC…but then I remembered this was NJ; such a reaction is as geologically and mathematically logical as “2+2=4” down yonder—but not in NJ, right? So I started to accept the high likelihood that it was some giant, modern, extirpated <10,000 years ago 🦌 , elk, 🫎, or maybe 🐻 or big 🐈‍⬛? Then as it started drying and still was just as fossil-like in density, I thought OK, this is looking and feeling and smelling like a legitimate NJ Cenozoic fossil. Is it a 🐬, 🐳, 🐋…maybe a 🐊 (what I started to hope for most 😂). Comparing it so some of my confirmed cetacean vertebrae from SC and MD I started to feel comfortable with “cetacean vert”, but to be sure, I reached out to some legendary fossil hunters well-acquainted with cetaceans. To my delight, @coryfinds @katrinalike.the.hurricane , @lowcountryfossilhunter , @mikeosheaart and a few other legends of the game confirmed what seemed so mathematically improbable that 23° night in the pitch black pines—cetacean vertebra indeed!?! I hope you’re all well, and remember that you shouldn’t 110% write off an area with a shadow of reason for potential or one deemed “no longer fossiliferous”—no matter what the geological maps, professionals, PDFs, or mildewy hardcovers say until you go out into the field and confirm their conventional wisdom in vivo! If you have any insights, even radically different ideas about what this vertebra is, don’t be shy! (NJ Beach Finds 2/2) But I was positively shocked to find more CaCO3-based mollusks (with beautiful, glossy enamel preservation) in one 2.5hr low tide go at the beach, than in dozens upon dozens of hours at most chock-full-of-verterbrates, inland Cenozoic sites. I hope to successfully prep as many of these pieces as I can; many of the Manasquan ones already show some fossils or forms ready to be revealed. Also, it may sound silly, being that I’m not certified in anything fossiliferous, but plain old critical-thinking is making me wonder, based on color, texture, lithology, shell assemblage, and geography, if these NJ Outer Coastal Plain, possibly Late Pleistocene/Early Holocene epoch fossils are equivalent in age to very similar-looking confirmed Pleistocene fossils I’ve found in South Carolina and New York’s Outer Coastal Plains. 🤷🏻 💫 I’m also going to use my tried and true friend, good ol’ Queens, NY acid rain, to wear these down a bit once the Tundra weather is over (I don’t want them cracked from freeze-thaw cycles). If you know of any other non-toxic solutions I can submerge these in or use to brush their secrets into sight, let me know! If all goes well this trove will give me a more holistic picture of what these lost worlds looked like! 🙏🏼 💫 #fossils #fossil #paleontology #fossilhunter #fossilhunting #newjersey #nj #science #nature #invertebrate #paleocene #discovery #eocene #animals #adventure #coral #glauconite #hiking #mollusk #pleistocene #earth #matrix #beach #ocean #fosiles #fósiles #education #teachers #teachersofinstagram #rock @donaldglover *Thank you @coryfinds for confirming my suspicion about the dark, denim-colored shell encrusted by (Pleistocene?) matrix in photos 3-5 being a 🦀! *The coral seen at the end is modern, a Northern Star Coral, but a lovely bonus attached to that ~56-50 million-year-old Eocene matrix.

2/21/2024, 10:14:12 PM

(NJ Beach Finds: 1 of 2) I haven’t had this many fossiliferous matrices in my bathtub since nearly a year ago, when it was twice as full of the more problematic (much higher clay content) Lias Clay, from the Dorset Coast! 😂 But I’m just as excited with this mix of fossiliferous matrices from three Cenozoic epochs—the Eocene (overwhelmingly); featuring a tiny minority of what I think is late Pleistocene/Early Holocene; and an even tinier minority of extra-special and intriguing Paleocene material. While I do still love vertebrate material, and even shark teeth (I’m not opposed to hunting them as it may seem😂); but I am holistic about my love of fossils and fossil hunting: as much as I can, my goal is always to recover as much evidence of ancient ecosystems as I can, from every trophic level possible. To this end, these matrices, which bore most beachgoers (to my delight) and make them “walk on by” like Burt Bacharach wrote, are pieces of a fossiliferous Rosetta Stone for me. 💫 I’m very familiar with many Paleocene, Eocene, and Miocene formations and horizons at inland sites and creeks all over NJ—but not all of these horizons, some I’ve only eyeballed or barely dug, assuming them unfossiliferous. But bulk sampling like this could change that, indeed already has! Also, in my experience, sadly, such inland NJ Cenozoic creeks are overwhelmingly represented by shark teeth, with steinkerns being rare, and legitimate CaCO3 mollusks/brachiopods and other organisms that were abundant in the in-vivo ecosystem being even rarer. *I found 3 shark teeth on this hunt too, one a 2/3 complete mackerel sp., and 2 mostly complete Makos. They’re misplaced in my car atm, but while the makos were nice surprises, the find that surprised me most was that mini-slab of reddish-orange Upper Vincentown (Late Paleocene) ultra-fossiliferous, calcareous sand! #fossils #fossil #paleontology #fossilhunter #fossilhunting #newjersey #nj #science #nature #invertebrate #paleocene #discovery #eocene #animals #adventure #bryozoan #glauconite #hiking #mollusk #pleistocene #earth #nycteachers #beach #ocean #fosiles #beach #education #teachers #teachersofinstagram #rock @donaldglover

A female Titanoboa gives birth- like most boas, she is ovoviviparous, and gives birth to live young instead of laying eggs. Good thing too, since Titanoboa was so large and heavy it likely couldn´t move much on land, and spent most if not all of its time in the water; laying eggs was just not practical to begin with :B Perhaps it was ovoviviparity inherited from its ancestors that helped Titanoboa to become this big in the first place! #titanoboa #boa #snake #reptile #hodarinundu #prehistoric #paleocene #fauna #megafauna #wildlife #animal

Phenacodus was a really cool little mammal from the early Cenozoic. This early hoofed animal lived across the open forests of North America and Europe from the Late Paleocene to the end of the Early Eocene. At nearly 5 feet long and 120 pounds, these “smallish” ungulates were actually among the largest hoofed animals of their time (albeit smaller than the giant pantodonts and carnivorous mesonychids). Their bunodont (short cusped) teeth were bulbous with little shearing crest development. This suggests a frugivorous diet of fruits, seeds, and whatever else they could find in the leaf litter. It is within animals like Phenacodus that we see the beginnings of the great diversity of hoofed animals that would dominate our world over the next 50 million years. . . . . . #phenacodus #phenacodontidae #paleocene #eocene #cenozoic #fossils #ungulate #paleontology

Did you know that there was a shark with needle-like fangs that ruled the oceans after the dinosaurs went extinct? 🦈 Scientists have discovered a new species of shark, named Palaeohypotodus bizzocoi, from fossils found in Alabama. This shark lived about 65 million years ago, during the Paleocene epoch, when life on Earth was recovering from a mass extinction event. 😮 Palaeohypotodus bizzocoi had small cusplets on the sides of its teeth, which gave it a fearsome appearance. It was one of the top predators in the tropical to sub-tropical seas that covered much of southern Alabama at that time. 🌊 This discovery is important because it helps us understand how marine life evolved and adapted after a global catastrophe. It also shows us how rich and diverse Alabama’s fossil record is, with over 400 species of fossil sharks and bony fish documented so far. 🦴 #shark #fossil #paleontology #alabama #paleocene #extinction #science #nature #history #mcwane #bizzocoi

Not to be dramatic but we are fanning over this mind-blowing fossil and fact: We currently are living with a tree that also gave shade to the dinosaurs—the ginkgo tree. 😱😲😮 The amazing ginkgo tree has been on this planet for over 280 million years (actually *before* the dinosaurs arrived) and looks virtually the same with its fan-like leaves. The Ginkgo biloba is the only surviving variety of the ginkgo family and is even more unusual in that it has no living relatives. This species was originally believed to be extinct until a German man, Engelbert Kaempfer, encountered a tree growing within a Chinese monastery in 1692. Some trees can grow over 1,000 years old. Titanoboa is an extinct snake that lived during the Palaeocene, just after the asteroid wiped out the dinosaurs (60-58 MYA). It is the largest serpent to have ever lived. Palaeontologists estimate that the Titanoboa grew to roughly 13 metres and weighed over a tonne. It had more than 250 vertebrae. In comparison, adult anacondas grow to around 6.5 metres (9 metres in extreme cases). The fossils of around 30 Titanoboas were discovered in a coal mine in the rainforests of Colombia, near Lake Maracaibo. The majority were adults, but some were juveniles. During the Palaeocene, this environment would have been similar to the Everglades in North America. Titanoboa would have spent much of its time in the water, hiding amid vegetation and waiting to ambush prey. I grew up in Australia, a country with some of the deadliest snake on the planet. I still do not think I would like to meet Titanoboa while out for a walk. #serpentday #weirdholidays #titanoboa #bigsnake #paleocene #idontlikesnakes #smartkidslikedinos #dinosaursareforgirlstoo #mamadino #dinolove #dinosauradventures #littledinofan #futurepaleontologist #learnaboutdinosaurs #kidslovedinosaurs #dinosaursofinstagram #roarsome #littlerangers #mamasaurus #dinomomsunite #littledinosauraficionado #RAWR

A species of crab, Costacopluma bijida, was described from a borehole core of the Guasare Formation (Palaeocene) from Lake Maracaibo, Venezuela. This discovery extends the known geographic, but not stratigraphic, range of the genus Costacopluma. Morphological details of C. bijida reveal a closer affinity between Costacopluma and Archaeopus than previously realized, which possibly strengthens the assignment of both genera to the same family (Retroplumidae). The interpreted depositional environment of the new specimen is shallow marine, the same as for other occurrences of Costacopluma described in the literature, suggesting that the genus as a whole preferred the shallow marine environment. Barylambda was a one of the largest animals around in North America during the Late Paleocene. It grew up to 2,5 meters in length and reached an estimated weight of 700 kilos. Despite looking a bit like ground sloths, which evolved much later in South America, it was a pantodont.

Pantodonts were one of the first groups of herbivorous mammals to evolve large sizes after the extinction of the non-avian dinosaurs. How they relate to other mammals is controversial. They have been thought to be non-placental eutherians, meaning more closely related to placental mammals than to marsupials. But more recent studies seem to indicate that they may have been very early branching ungulates.

The group was rather diverse, ranging from squirrel to rhino-sized. Some of its members were arboreal, others were semiaquatic like hippos and others, like Barylambda, were land-dwelling. #paleoart #paleontology #paleontologia #paleoarte #pantodont #barylambda #paleomedia #illustration #animalillustration #animalart #paleocene #cenozoic #mammal #sciart #illustratedbook

#cenozoicpaleo2023 day 12: Meet Hadrogeneios phosphaticus! Although famous for the Cretaceous mosasaurs found there, the Ouled Abdoun basin of Morocco has strata from the Paleocene and Eocene that have give us a look at some of the earliest known afrotheres. Hadrogeneios is the most recent of these, and probably represents the most basal member of Paenungulamorpha, the group that includes hyrax, sirenians and proboscidians. Despite being so basal, Hadrogeneios has a very wierd specialized thickened chin and reduced incisors, resembling some "creodont" groups, that may have helped it brace itself and pull at tough fruits and leaves. #paleoart #paleoartist #sciart #scienceillustration #illustration #evolution #mammals #mammalsofinstagram #prehistoric #fossil #paleontology #wildlifeart #zoology #extinctanimals #wilderness #scicomm #hyrax #paleocene #paenungulata #proboscidea #digitalart # #morocco #ouledabdounbasin #vectorart #illustrator #natureart

These are two fossil leaves (Beringiaphyllum cupanoides and Zizyphoides flabellum) from the Fort Union Formation near Glendive, Montana. This specimen is quite special because one leaf is on one side of the rock and the other is on the reverse. The Beringiaphyllum leaf is 2.75" long and the Zizyphoides leaf is 2.4" wide. The dark orange/brown preservation contrasts well against the shale, and many of the details in the leaves can be seen in good relief. There may be some touchups to the surface of the leaves where pieces of them flaked onto the negative during collection. Follow the link in our bio or visit www.FossilEra.com and search for "fossil leaves" to see more photos & information. . . . . #fossilera #fossils #minerals #fossilleaves #leaffossil #Beringiaphyllumcupanoides #Zizyphoidesflabellum #UnionFormation #montana #Paleocene

Found all these shark teeth and ray mouth plate parts earlier this week when I had a couple of hours between meetings. There are only so many hours in a day. Therefore I always keep my eyes open for the hidden treasures. #fossilhunting #fossilized #fossilcollecting #fossilcollector #fossilhunter #paleocenefossils #virginiafossil #fossilrayplate #sharkteeth #fossilizedsharktooth #fossilizedsharkteeth #rayplate #sharkteethfossil #paleocene #savingthepast #tigershark #tigersharktooth #tigersharktooth #alwayskeepyoureyesopen #zsoltfrecska @zsoltfl

February 2023 favorites! Here are my favorite finds from 10 hunts to 8 locations in Maryland, Virginia, and Delaware. There are fossils from the Cretaceous period, Paleocene and Miocene epochs, and treasures from the early 20th century. As always, it's hard to pick my favorites and I could rearrange them for hours. So many good finds are left out but I probably tried to stuff too many in this photo. There's a penny at lower right for scale. . . . #miocene #cretaceous #paleocene #paleo #paleontology #beachcombing #beachtreasure #ancient #seashells #fossils #fossilhunting #fossilfinds #flatlay #collection #treasure #mudlarking #arrangement #sharktooth #shark #teeth #bonecollector

#cenozoicpaleo2023 day 3, Meet Kumimanu fordycei! This new species of giant early penguin, found in the late Paleocene of New Zealand, might be the largest known in the fossil record. Based on a huge complete humerus and elements of the pectoral girdle, neck and legs, mass estimates for this bird sit at ~150kg! This illustrates the rapid diversification of early penguins quickly after the end of the Cretaceous; attaining large body sizes even with limbs less specialized for underwater flight. #paleoart #paleoartist #vectorart #digitalart #naturalhistory #fossil #wildlifeart #paleontology #penguin #penguinstagram #flipper #paleocene #newzealand #otago #hampden #sciart #scienceillustration #scicomm #birdsofinstagram #birdart

#cenozoicpaleo2023 Day 2, meet Anachronornis anhimops! Anachronornis is a relatively small anseriform from the wet subtropical forests of late Paleocene Wyoming, discovered inside a calcareous nodule nearly complete, articulated, and preserved in 3d. This animal is an early relative of the clade of birds that includes both screamers as well as ducks and geese. It probably represents an animal similar to the common ancestor of these two anseriform lineages, combining skeletal features similar to both with basal features reminiscent of galliforms. Anachronornis probably spent its time feeding on plants in and alongside shallow water, and doesn't seem adapted to wading or swimming like its relatives. #paleoart #paleoartist #sciart #scienceillustration #illustration #evolution #birdsofinstagram #birdstagram #prehistoric #fossil #paleontology #birdart #zoology #extinctanimals #wilderness #scicomm #anseriformes #chickenduck #digitalart #paleocene #vectorart #willwood #wyoming #clarksfork
