Een folly is een ongewoon bouwwerk dat geen echte functie heeft, maar uitsluitende een decoratief, kunstzinnig of ludiek doel dient. De term komt uit het Engels waar het โdwaasheidโ betekent. Een voorbeeld van een folly vind je bij het voormalige Mariรซnhage waar een muur van vier onregelmatige spitsbogen de indruk moet wekken ouder te zijn dan deze in werkelijkheid is. Op de 15e-eeuwse resten van de westelijke kloostergang van het oude klooster werd in 1967 een constructie gemetseld. Het was een fantasieconstructie bij wijze van folly op initiatief van pater Leopold Verhagen. Op de een of andere manier ging later het verhaal rond dat de muur het oudste stukje Eindhoven was. Ook in Strijp kun je in de pastorietuin een folly zien uit de jaren veertig van de vorige eeuw. De toenmalige pastoor Werners bouwde eigenhandig dit bouwwerk. Hij gebruikte hierbij neogotisch ornamenten van de in 1936 afgebrande Sint-Trudokerk. De pastoor was ontevreden over de herbouw van de kerk en ging zelf aan de slag om de indruk te wekken dat er ooit een grote kerk op die plaats gestaan zou hebben. The Gothic Arch, Folly. Pen and ink and pencil A new passion for me: the follies of Ireland. Build for aesthetic pleasure, to decorate a garden mainly in the 18th and 19th century there are many types of follies, some of them inspired by gothic or roman architecture or by Irish folklore . A lot of them are famine follies. I am going around gardens, demesnes and parklands to discover these wonderful and ornamental historical buildings. Some of them had a purpose other than just ornamental. Each of then has a story... This first one is one of three follies in the estate of Belvedere house, in county Westmeath. It was built around 1760. It is an interesting mixture of gothic, grotesque and whimsical style. I like its amusing crenellated parapet on top! Its design was created by Thomas Wright, architect, mathematicien and astronomer. Next drawing will be the famous jaleousy wall. Folly Hill- No. 4 in my series of spring/summer paintings. I always liked this row of painted pastel houses lining the top of the approach to Faringdon. Yes I know the folly hill is not situated quite so close by, but thats the beauty of artistic license hey? ๐This is my 4th attempt at this view over as many years, and having lived nearby for the past 15 years I cant believe it has taken me so long to paint this! The failed attempts just were not giving me enough of a feeling of the ascent up to this part of this old market town. Hackfall Woods This is a place I've had on my hometown doorstep all my life and never been, often overlooking it in favour of other 'juicier' places. Boy how wrong was I. I climaxed (spiritually) 7.5 times throughout. It has everything you'd want on an adventure. An abundance of water features (natural and man made), follies, ruins, hills, castles, precarious edges with a potential for death (not recommended for unicycles or children under 30) and a varied ecology to soak up in a seratonin fuelled few hours. During the 18th century Hackfall was landscaped in the picturesque style by landowner William Aislabie, who created views by engineering streams and pools, planting trees and building follies. J. M. W. Turner and William Sawrey Gilpin painted it, and pictures of it featured on Catherine the Great's 1773 Wedgwooddinner service. Some 19th century writers called it "one of the most beautiful woods in the country."
