TL:DR - please give blood in honor of my birthday! On May 9, I will turn 53. My father was 53 when he died, and I am thinking about that a lot. Everything feels heavy right now. I am scared, and I am tried. I want the hostages to return home, and I want my friends and family in Israel to be safe. I want the right to speech and protest to be protected and the right *not* to be harassed, intimidated, and assaulted to be protected. But the reality is that I cannot accomplish any of these things--I can barely move the needle. And however strongly I want these things, it feels like there are ten people who equally strongly oppose them. So I did what I do when I feel unmoored and lousy: I gave blood. For many years now, this has been my selfish act--it makes me feel better. It is an unequivocal good. It is uncontroversial, it is positive, and it is (for me) easy and meaningful. Someone will be helped because I did this. Someone I will never know. For most people, giving blood is easy and relatively quick. Thanks to good, smart decisions by the FDA (many of them way too long in coming, but at least they did the right thing eventually), more people can donate blood now than ever before. In honor of my 53rd birthday, I'm setting a very ambitious goal. I would like 53 people to donate blood, plasma, or platelets in the month of May, and share that with me. (If you want to tell me privately, that is fine.) If you gave too recently to be able to give in May, share that with me and promise to give again when you can and I'll count that, though I'd love it if I got 53 donations in May. I'm not asking for your money, and I'm not asking you to support an ideological cause. I'm asking you to save a life, and to feel good about yourself in the process. If you can't give blood, totally understood. Go do something else that is unequivocally good. I put it off again for far too long, potentially because of a fear of discovering I have low iron levels again 😅 Every donation counts and saves lives. 4,300 blood donations are needed every day on average to meet the needs of hospitals. After I donated I was told my donation was issued to Royal Free Hospital - it’s awesome to see where it goes! 😂 In addition, 12,000 new black heritage donors are needed to meet the demand for ethnically matched blood for sickle sell patients who need blood transfusions to stay alive. On Friday after work I tried to go and give blood but my hemoglobin was too low for some reason (within normal levels but too low for donation) so now I can't donate for three months. 🙁 However at that point there was decent weather (unlike today) and I went up to Westminster Cathedral Hall near Victoria for the donation centre, so although it was disappointing I had a nice walk in the sunshine. #London #westminstercathedral #giveblood

Mega Blood Donation Drive Our NSS unit in association with hospital name and in collaboration with Lion Club organized a blood donation camp on 10th November 2023, from 9 am to 4 pm. The camp took place at our college gymkhana, welcoming participants from our college campus. This time, the turnout and energy surpassed all expectations, more than no. of donor count joined hands in donating blood. Our esteemed teachers, council members, and fellow students stood in solidarity, generously contributing to our blood donation initiative. As a token of appreciation, donors received certificates and donor cards, symbolizing their invaluable contribution to saving lives. . . .
