Even adolescents, like the one staring into the camera, were paver workers. This vintage photo is from the early to the mid-twentieth century of pavers working in Vila da Madalena do Pico on Pico Island. A partial view of pavers at the back and foreground, adding calçadas (English: cobblestones) in the municipality. The pavers added elaborate designs on the calçadas that depicted Azorean tradition, traffic lane signs, and symbols. The calçadas were not only in Madalena but also across the Azores. Amongst those paver workers is a young lad posing to the camera. To the right of the photo, in between the back and foreground, is a group of residents—a few of those probable paver workers are taking a break watching their colleagues at work. Fast-forward to the present, paved roads have replaced most calçadas. Hobbit on a quest* ...fast forward to when I actually reached the island of Pico (who would have though that a ferry ride would be such a bumpy adventure). My parents’ figueira-da-Índia (right and mid-bottom) among the Montanha do Pico providing the perfect backdrop. My parents grow two types of fig trees: the common fig (not pictured) and the Indian fig (or the Barbary fig). My mother bakes a sweet recipe and makes a jam from the figs while my dad makes alcohol. The former tastes delicious, and the latter bitter and hard. Note: Be it drunk or sober, never walk by figs in the dark. Many times over, I pricked myself.
