We created two books about the Occupation. For the 75th anniversary of the Liberation we published a picture book, ‘What’s in your pocket, Peg?’, designed in consultation with education experts to be a teaching aid for primary schools to bring the Occupation to life for the next generation, as well as being a very readable story. It has proved really popular (we have nearly sold out, with under 100 copies left at this point! A huge thank you to @thompsonestatesjersey for sponsoring it). I love going into schools to read it and talk about the Occupation. Always fascinating to hear children’s thoughts and understanding of this critical part of Jersey history - and they often have stories of their own from grandparents, which are awesome to listen to. And for the 76th anniversary, we were asked to create a book of memories, ‘Voices from the Occupation’. I so loved putting this together because there are so many little stories that make it feel so real and give a genuine understanding of parts of life that I simply hadn’t considered before (a big thank you to Maillards Funeral Directors for their sponsorship and to everyone who got in touch with their memories and stories). This sold out in the first three or four months… … and we are now looking to create a bigger, better version for the 80th anniversary next year. JERSEY HISTORY: In 94’ John Gearman of Full Boar Graphic Design Studios was on assignment in Queensland for the State of Origin Series when contacted by Peter Gow who was looking at modernising the Sharks current playing jersey and was unhappy with the designs put forward by the jersey manufacturers. This would be the first jersey Gearman would ever design. Gearman recalls he drew a generic jersey template on a blank piece of paper which he had the hotel staff make into 30 copies. He purchased some colour textas from a nearby store and went about creating a number of different designs for Gow to consider. Gearman recalls basing the design chosen by Gow on the jersey worn at the time by the San Jose Sharks (Ice Hockey) Team. When Cronulla first took the field in their new jerseys the following year in the World 7’s and Tooheys Challenge, the jersey was teal in colour, as per the colour of the San Jose Sharks jersey. The Unfinished Tunnels These 60cm tracks ran throughout the tunnel complex. They were for transporting the rubble out of the tunnels in small railway side tipper carts. They were all loaded by hand and when full they were pushed to the entrance / exit to be dumped in the nearby Cap Verd valley. 11 April 1904 While working to complete the Jersey City Reservoir, diver William Hoar would make his final dive. His foot would become stuck in a drain pipe, and despite heroic efforts from fellow divers, he would eventually succumb to exhaustion and drown, 70ft below the surface. And there he would remain for several days before his body was recovered and buried. Hoar was one of over a dozen men who were killed or injured while working on the project. Transportation is an important part of Waretown’s rich history… The train arrived in Waretown in the mid-1800s. The Toms River Railroad was established in Ocean County in 1866, with a stop at the county seat of Toms River, New Jersey. The line was extended to Waretown in 1872, by the Toms River & Waretown Railroad. In 1881, the Central Railroad of New Jersey (CNJ) purchased the line. Passenger service was terminated in the mid-1950s. Freight service continued into the late 1970s. However, by that time, CNJ was bankrupt and had been absorbed by Conrail, who abandoned the line in 1981. The former roadbed was converted for rail trail use in 2007 as the Barnegat Branch Trail. Horse and buggy were slowly replaced by the automobile. Route 9 was once Route 4. It was part of the old New York Road. These markers were taken from the Waretown Creek bridge on today’s Route 9. By the 1940s, US 9 had been extended south along Route 4. Route 9 then became the only source for connecting the small coastal communities along Barnegat Bay. Another important NJ Woman is Carrie Cook Sanborn, who was a late nineteenth-century Quaker artist and head of the Cedars Art Colony in Point Pleasant Beach. The Cook family supplemented their farming income by transforming their home into a boarding house in 1831. Summer guests paid between $12 and $15 each week, maintained access to the Manasquan River in which they could swim and fish, traveled to the nearby Atlantic Ocean, and enjoyed picnics in the Cedars, a grove of trees in the middle of the Cook property. In later years, Sanborn presided over an art colony based on the homestead. She gave lessons in the Cedars, and many prominent artists and writers traveled to the colony to create alongside Sanborn herself, including Scottish author Robert Louis Stevenson. Some of the creatives included the first generation of Jersey Shore painters and artists, educated in Europe and arrived in the Manasquan River area around 1880. Artist Will Hicok Low, a student of the French masters Jean-Léon Gérôme and Carolus-Duran, spent summers at Brielle and Point Pleasant Beach. His friend visited the area as well, artist Wyatt Eaton, who had studied with Whistler, Gérôme and Barbizon artist Jean Francois Millet. Today, the G. To close out Women’s History Month, I wanted to highlight some notable NJ Women throughout the years… First is Dr. Margaret Mace, called “The Florence Nightingale of South Jersey”, born in England in 1871, settled in Anglesea (Wildwood) in the 1880s, and graduated Women’s College of Medicine in Philadelphia in 1905. She crusaded for a county health service and a county hospital. In 1911, she and J. Thompson Baker along with some Five Mile Beach businessmen incorporated to open Samaritan Hospital of Cape May County. In 1915, she bought the Frederick Sutton Mansion and opened Mace Emergency Hospital at 2410 Atlantic Ave., with 25 beds. She operated there until 1950, a year before her death. It is estimated she delivered 6,000 babies during her practice. The Five Mile Beach Sun in Wildwood, NJ has been honoring the legacy of Dr. Margaret Mace with an eventful photo shoot each year where a handful of Dr. Mace’s 6,000 babies that she delivered gather together for a reunion every July at the Hereford Inlet Lighthouse. In 1950, Burdette Tomlin Memorial Hospital opened in Court House. The annual Good Friday trip down to Seymour tower. Good Friday is a day that we never work on the farm apart from looking after the cows. It’s something that has happened on the family farm for generations and we’ve always been told it would be bad luck to work on Good Friday. . For those that don’t know, Seymour tower is situated 2 miles off the south coast of Jersey and was built in 1782 following the Battle of Jersey in 1781 where the French led a failed invasion. The tower was built as a way to protect the island and pre warn islanders of an impending attack. Nowadays Jersey Heritage run the tower and you can actually stay the night ! . The reason for our trip down is that traditionally, fish is always eaten on Good Friday so we go low water fishing and aim to catch lobsters, ormers and crabs but in reality we never do! We usually end up with some oysters, clams and razor fish! It’s still a great day out and hopefully it will continue for many years to come ! Slightly missed the equinox this time but so loved creating our ‘Charlie & Spud and the Stone Age’ book, with Helen Otterwell from Jersey Heritage. Such a fascinating period in human history and a great fun one to bring alive, especially as we could give it some lovely local touches: basing it around La Hougue Bie, showing the neolithic longhouse as Li-Li’s home, the broken pot from the museum etc. Very cool. Lots of teachers and schools are using it as a teaching aid, with its information corners making it easy and interesting. I love being asked in to read the book and chat about why that period is so important in how our culture and lifestyle changed and developed - with the polishing of axe heads and all that meant for humankind. It is definitely one of my favourites. Elizabeth Castle, Jersey, Channel Islands After getting the bus/boat out to the tidal island. We managed to explore the castle which is layered with different influences. Built from the 16th century onwards, it helped defend Jersey for 400 years. It gave refuse to King Charles during the English civil war. We were able to explore the hermitage rock where St Helier is thought to have lived in 550AD. Strolling on Gorey Pier will take you past a blue and white house, next door to what was once the Harbourmaster’s house. The ground floor window displays ceramics by a local artist, presented in what might appear at first glance to be a rather unique window frame. During the occupation this house was fortified as part of Resistance Nest Gorey Harbour (WN Hafen Gorey). The intricate window frame is in fact the remnants of a reinforced MG 42 position (final photo) that would have covered the pier and the near approach to the harbour. The Hotel Metropole was the administrative headquarters of the German Commander-in Chief from April 1941. Before then it was located at Monaco, St. Saviour's Road. The following is a useful extract from 'The Memoirs of Lord Coutanche' compiled by H.R.S. Pocock: 'When I used to go down from time to time to see him [Island Commandant Graf von Schmettow] at his Headquarters in what is now the Hotel Metropole in Roseville Street, we used to sit in his large office which had been the drawing room when it was a private house, and had a large balcony leading off it. Here was posted a sentry who would periodically march up and down the balcony, guarding the General. These sentries were of course continually being changed and Schmettow was suspicious of some of them. He consequently treated them all as spies. In our conversations, when the sentry approached, he used to hold up a his finger to me in order that I might be warned to say nothing while the sentry was passing. Why an underground hospital? The Tunnels were originally built as an artillery repair facility and barracks store. In 1944, fearing an assault on Jersey, the Germans converted the complex into a Casualty Receiving Station. Deep underground, the hospital would be impervious to gas and air attack, a safe environment for injured troops. It could hold up to 500 casualties. Our archives In our archives is this beautiful mixed media portrait of Phyllis Mary Webb. The work is by renowned Jersey-born artist Edmund Blampied in 1917. At this time he was residing in a rented room in a house in Kensington Place, St. Helier, where the Webb family also lived. The artist used a portrait photograph of eight month old Phyllis Mary Webb (born 14th May 1916) standing dressed in a child's smock as a basis for the drawing, which he altered to become a half length portrait, incorporating a book for the purpose of composition and interest. Mr. Harold John Noel met Phyllis Webb many years later; they married on 27th April 1937 at St. Helier Parish Church. The days leading up to the onset of the German Occupation found Harold, Phyllis and their newly born child, Michael, living in three rented rooms of number 3, Commercial Buildings, St. Helier, immediately adjacent to the harbour. The family took the decision to evacuate to England, via Weymouth, just three days before the arrival of the Germans which took place on 1st July 1940. The day after the family left the island, 28th June 1940, German Heinkel aircraft took part in a raid on Jersey and Guernsey which resulted in 44 civilian deaths. Commercial Buildings took some of the brunt of the Jersey raid, with stray bullets passing through the first floor window of the Noel’s flat. Wrecked Dornier Do 17 M/P aircraft This accident occurred on 19th March 1941 when this aircraft of the 3rd Squadron of the Reconnaissance Group made a belly landing at Jersey Airport and sustained 30% damage. The other photos show Dornier Do17 aircrafts in Jersey. The Do17 entered military service in 1937, gaining the nickname 'Flying Pencil' as a consequence of its slender fuselage. It had a range of 1,500km (932 miles) and a service ceiling of 8,200m (26,905ft) and was flown by a crew of four. The first two military variants were the Do 17E-1 and Do 17F-1, being high speed bomber and long range photo-reconnaissance aircraft respectively. Progressive development lead to the Do 17M/P medium bomber/reconnaissance aircraft and Do 17S/U reconnaissance aircraft. The definitive model was the radial-engine Do 17Z. The Enigma Machine. The basic Enigma machine was invented y Arthur Scherbius in Berlin, 1918 and was first marketed to meet the security needs of banks. Mrs. Marjorie Robbins and her daughter Joan were a pair of notorious collaborators who lived in Midvale Road, St. Helier, where they would hold noisy weekend parties for their German friends. Mrs. Robbins was well known for giving Nazi salutes and saying 'Heil Hitler' to Germans she passed in the street. Soon after Liberation Day mother and daughter were dragged from their home by a large mob, a noose was placed around the necks of both of them and the ropes thrown over a lamp post. They would most certainly have been lynched had a local doctor not telephoned the police, and a squad of Liberation troops was sent to restore order.
