Could this be a self portrait of the miniaturist and later to become fairy artist John Simmons? The label on the back certainly would confirm this, however the watercolour is signed John Fisher and dated 1845. Turns out both artists were living in the Clifton area of Bristol. Not much is known of either of these artists, however in 1849 J Fisher’s first entry to the Royal Academy was a portrait he painted of himself, he carried on exhibiting portraits of other people at the RA until 1858. John Simmons was born in Clifton, near Bristol, and baptised in Bristol on 13 April 1823. In 1849, the same year Fisher exhibited his portrait, Simmons was elected to the membership of the Bristol Academy of the Fine Arts, and established himself at its exhibitions as a painter of portrait watercolours and especially miniatures. In the mid 1860s, Simmons turned to fairy paintings. The portrait came from the recent sale of contents belonging to George Withers and had been undisturbed from its frame until now. There appears to be no other portraits of Fisher or Simmons to compare with. Unless I am mistaken it seems quite likely from the evidence on the frame that the artist used a pseudonym. Martin Luther’s books were burned in a bonfire on 12 May 1521. John Fisher, Bishop of Rochester, preached a two hour long sermon at St. Paul’s Cathedral. With Cardinal Thomas Wolsey in attendance, Bishop Fisher denounced Martin Luther and announced the Papal Bull declaring Luther a heretic. Wolsey also gave a speech excommunicating Luther and his followers. While the sermon and speeches were delivered, Lutheran works were burned. The centenary today of the lad himself. Hancock once observed ‘A comedy is just a tragedy played at a different speed.’ He combined tragedy and comedy in one short life so meticulously chronicled in John Fisher’s superb biography which includes Hancock’s own memoirs. The impeccable scripts by Galton & Simpson including my interview with them were published in 1974. The reminiscence in 1975 by Philip Oakes who collaborated with him on the movie The Punch and Judy Man and concluded ‘ When I think of him now it is with love and exasperation and pride, and a sense of loss that has in no way diminished. I think of him after a sober working day, clinking the ice in his glass and murmuring, “Listen to that.. the best sound in the world.” I think of him sifting his anthology of unforgivable sayings and coming up with the winner - the prim, disapproving refusal: “Not for me, thank you.” And I think of him standing one night in the pouring rain, lightning sizzling overhead, and some malevolent, unbelieved-in God threatening doom with peal after peal of thunder. As everyone mourns the loss of the Tropicana, the assumption is that there’s a baseball stadium coming to replace it. Not so fast. It was already far from a done deal, and new developments make this an even murkier situation. The A’s have reached an agreement to play their games in Sacramento at Sutter Health Park, a 10,000 seat minor league stadium, from 2025-27. This in itself is not huge news, but the team has also filed trademarks for the terms “Sacramento A’s” and “Sacramento Athletics”. This is after the team stated they would NOT be using a city designation while in Sacramento, and would simply be called the “Athletics” or “A’s”. Why file the trademarks if you had no intention to use the city designation? In addition, local sports enthusiast @vitalvegas shared a rumor that the Seminoles, who operate the Hard Rock Hotel and Casino in Sacramento, have offered to build a ballpark in Sacramento for the A’s. I’m sure John Fisher is very interested in spending less money. Where there’s smoke, there’s fire. Given the sketchy history of the A’s ownership, it would appear that they are doing their best to create a behind-the-scenes bidding war between Las Vegas, Sacramento, and potentially even Oakland. The Las Vegas Athletics are FAR from a sure thing, and I would take any and all news that comes out regarding the situation (including this news!) with a grain of salt.

Frying tonight .... well not quite! #OTD 5th April 1531 a cook in the household of John Fisher, Bishop of Rochester, Richard Roose, was boiled to death at Smithfield for poisoning. This unique punishment claimed only one other, in March 1542 a maidservant and serial poisoner Margaret Davy, poisoning her master and mistress. The act was repealed in 1547 under Edward VI. Never tried for the crime of which he was accused, and without opportunity to defend himself, it is believed that he had added a secret ingredient to the pottage which caused the death of 2 people, the Bishop himself escaped death but became seriously ill. On 5 April 1531, Richard Roose, cook in the household of John Fisher, Bishop of Rochester, was boiled to death at Smithfield for the crime of poisoning. Roose had added something to the pottage – he claimed he believed the addition was just a purgative and done as a joke, but two people died and Fisher himself became ill. At the time, it was whispered that Anne Boleyn’s supporters were behind it, in an effort to rid themselves of Fisher, who was one of the few clergy who openly and energetically opposed the annulment of Henry VIII’s marriage to Katharine of Aragon. No evidence was brought at the time to prove this allegation. Fisher (pictured) was later executed. Should we be worried about Tyler Soderstrom? THE GOOD: The short answer is NOT YET. Our catcher spot belongs to Shea Langeliers until further notice especially after Shea slashed .368/.419/.998 with two homers in spring. Over at first base Ryan Noda seems to have that job locked down so there really is no spot for Soderstrom to get significant playing time and with his struggles at the plate, there’d be really no point in having him ride the bench in the bigs. Send him to Vegas let him get his groove back. THE BAD Soderstrom slashed .121/.167/.182 in spring training, which is kind of concerning for a guy whose strength is his bat. In Triple-A last year Soderstrom was alright, .252/.307/.526 while showcasing great power with 21 home runs. Not to mention the A’s C/1B strategy for Soderstrom probably isn’t the best idea as his fielding abilities have always been shaky. When the Oakland Athletics relocate to Las Vegas, it will be the fourth city the franchise has called home since its founding in 1901. The Athletics were established in Philadelphia, playing in the city between 1901 and 1954. The team moved to Kansas City in 1955, staying there until 1967. The Athletics then relocated to Oakland in 1968, calling the Oakland-Alameda County Coliseum home to this day. The #Oakland #Athletics (A’s) have been officially approved for relocation from Oakland to #lasvegas after a unanimous vote by Major League Baseball #MLB owners. The team’s owner, #JohnFisher has faced criticism for not investing enough in the team, and they have been unable to secure a site for a new ballpark in Oakland. However, there is still a hurdle to overcome as a teachers union in #Nevada is opposing the $380 million in public funding for the new stadium. If the move goes ahead, the A’s will be the first MLB team to change cities since the #Montreal #Expos became the #Washington #Nationals in 2005. The A’s lease with the Oakland Coliseum expires in 2024, and it is unclear where they will play after that. The team has seen a decline in attendance in recent years, and fans have been calling for Fisher to sell the team.
