Now playing in stereo, 1972 (OG Terre Haute pressing). : I can’t get enough of these funky vibes this afternoon courtesy of the other Dr. J. This was Brockington’s debut album and he only put one more out the following year (The United Chair - posted by @what_can_brown back in 2020). But both albums are somewhat rare and you really don’t see them or hear anyone talking about them either. I was lucky enough to rescue this one from the thrift store back in February for 75 cents. Besides these two, he released a gospel album in 1990. Unfortunately, he passed away in 2008 in his early 60’s. He plays the keyboards and on side 2 it’s all groovy organ sounds. The band was on point and I especially enjoyed the bass lines. This 1973 beauty by Julius Brockington comes from an interesting era. Instrumental R&B I would call it. Most jazzers started incorporating some type funk rhythms into their sound. Jazz funk music was popular and charting. But there was a whole other scene happening too. Still instrumental but more accessible to the average listener and radio. Heavy R&B dance grooves, shorter song lengths, Gospel/Blues and Soul influences, simplistic melodies that one could easily hum along to. No crazy solos, time signatures or arrangements. Just great groove music you could put on and dance to or just chill. Julius leads the six piece band from his Organ/Piano bench. Nice to see all seven tracks are originals. I always leaned towards the opening track “In the Back of the Churchyard”. With pumping organ grooves and the every so popular wah guitar keeping the rhythm locked in tight with the drums. Also like “Jaded Jackie”. Via American Songwriter website article dated 2/11/22: ""Young, Gifted And Black" spoke to the continued racial tensions in the country and more Black empowerment through its 12 tracks, several of which Franklin penned for the album herself, including "Rock Steady". Drummer Bernard "Pretty" Purdie, who began working with Aretha in 1970 and continued as her musical director for 5 years, was playing a drumbeat that caught her attention. “What he described as "a funky and low downbeat," was the one that sparked her to begin writing "Rock Steady". Purdie’s distinctive Jamaican drum feel complemented Franklin’s vocals bringing out the essence of the song. She also praised Donny Hathaway contributing layers of electric piano and organ himself. Hathaway worked around the backbeat of Purdie's drums, Chuck Rainey's bass, Dr. John on percussion, and The Memphis Horns brass section. Under the supervision of Atlantic Records producers Arif Mardin and Jerry Wexler, with engineer Tom Dowd manning the control board, "Rock Steady" became one of her biggest hits."
