I was going to attempt to listen to some of these before I left for vacation but those plans flew out the window... Suede - Autofiction: Live I passed on the “deluxe” CD edition of Autofiction that came out last year because the packaging looked like shit and I didn’t want to support that nonsense. I already had all of the bonus tracks from the previous digital deluxe edition. I had a feeling that they were going to put the live album on vinyl at some point and, surprise surprise, here it is. Orchestral Manoeuvres In The Dark - Bauhaus Staircase Instrumentals Nice to have this as a companion to the main album. Pulp - Intro: The Gift Recordings At first, I was going pass on this because I already have the three EPs that this encompasses but I panic-bought it when I saw some UK shops actually had leftover copies available. Mansun - Little Kix Similar to the Pulp album, I already have an OG press of this but, man, I have the reissues of the first two albums so I couldn’t not get this. Loyle Carner - Not Waving, Drowning His second album. And thus completing his albums collection. Given his last album, hugo, came out in 2022, he’s due for a new one now. Jimmy Eat World - Clarity: Phoenix Sessions This is a nice release to celebrate Clarity’s 25th (!) anniversary. It recorded in 2020 during “lockdown”. While it’s a good performance, I honestly would have preferred that they released the live recording they did on the Clarity 10 year anniversary tour. Mainly because that was actually done in front of an audience. I also think the version of Goodbye Sky Harbor on that live recording, which all of the loops that Jim created live, was better. But beggars can’t be choosers, I suppose. Jimmy Eat World/Manchester Orchestra - Tour Split Single This was available on last year’s co-headlining tour, which I didn’t see. I can’t remember why. Probably because I didn’t want to see JEW in a big venue. But I picked up this split from their webstore. I foolishly paid $30 for it. More in the comments…
Doves’ Kingdom of Rust is a different kind of Doves album. Unlike prior LPs, it fully and openly embraces synthesizers. It opens with Jetstream, a song built on climbing Blade Runner keyboards that peaks and collapses into New Order-y guitars. Later synthesizer flourishes appear on tracks like The Outsiders, and it’s neat to hear the band carving out new territory (or is it old territory based on their Sub Sub roots?). They would further flesh out this sound on their side projects. The band leans hard into Jimi Goodwin’s bass on this album, allowing it to drive tracks like the Rapture-esque Compulsion and the build and explosion of the song 10:03. And the band’s mix and production is unparalleled. Sonically, it’s the most layered Doves album, and I’m assuming Jez Williams had a hand in the mix (he later co-produced White Flower’s awesome first album, Day by Day). This all said, the album doesn’t stray so far from Doves traditional sound that it alienates fans. On the title track, Jimi Goodwin’s familiar voice rolls over a barren western landscape like a ghostly tumbleweed. It’s really a highlight that grounds the album following the heights of Jetstream. (As an aside, this track pairs well on a mixtape with The Dears’ Whites Only Party.) Spellbound sounds like a lost track from their glorious Lost Souls. Birds Flew Backwards harkens back to The Last Broadcast, and Winter Hill and The Greatest Denier are Some Cities-level guitar tracks. Rumors are afoot that a new album is coming, and as someone who has travelled an ocean to see them play in Manchester, I can’t wait. Released 40 years ago today, my initial reaction to Junk Culture was that it felt too commercial. At the time, I rebelled against the well-deserved success of the bands I liked. After all, they were MINE. Popularity was the kiss of death. Fortunately, I reconsidered my position on this album just a couple years later. My sister had the OMD greatest hits cassette, and we spent a road-trip listening to it on repeat. Somewhere in Kentucky, I realized that Tesla Girls, Locomotion, and Talking Loud and Clear served as the connective tissue between the more avant-garde Orchestral Manoeuvres in the Dark and the later John Hughes-slash-Top 40 OMD. Graveface’s exclusive “Unofficial RSD” “sand and crimson vinyl” pressing of Slowdive’s last album. Did I need it? Of course not. Especially since I already have the crystal clear and gold variants of it. But it seemed appropriate to have this variant given the direct connection between the band and Graveface Records - with Graveface having released Monster Movie, Eternal and Beachy Head records and all three bands having Christian from Slowdive in their ranks. Plus this is (to my knowledge) only one of two vinyl variants that uses the red printed cover. Also, I think this is the only color variant that isn’t just one solid color. A - A Vs Monkey Kong After a couple months delay, this finally arrived earlier this week. I do have to say that it was worth the wait. Taking a look at the final product, a lot of care was put into this. The hand-numbered outer fold-out sleeve adds a nice touch to the bigger existing elements of the original album. And I have special memories attached to the album itself. Since the album got a US release, the band played a few shows in the run up to its US release in 2000. The first one was at The Viper Room. My buddies and I witnessed what sounded like a pretty heated argument between Giles Perry and Dan Carter outside their tour bus. We were just hanging out, fanboying and waiting to ask them to sign our CDs... Later, they played another headline show at The Troubadour around the time that the album was finally released Stateside. And then they ended up supporting The Bloodhound Gang on their US tour. This was right around the time “The Bad Touch” was a huge hit so I imagine it got them some good exposure in the States. They ended up playing at The Palace in Hollywood when that tour got to L.A. Strangely, the follow-up album, Hi-Fi Serious, became their biggest-selling album in the UK. Manic Street Preachers - Lifeblood (20th Anniversary Edition) Okay, I will be the first to admit I was not into this album when it first came out. Up to that point, it was my least favorite Manics album. Mainly because it was a Manics soft rock album. I get that they were trying to do something different and new from where they left off with Know Your Enemy, which I actually enjoyed. But this wasn’t the direction I was expecting. There are a few tracks from this era that I like - Empty Souls, Askew Road, Everything Will Be, Dying Breeds - but I really don’t reach for it to spin. But listening back to it now, it’s not that bad. I’m probably more forgiving of the Manics these days. And it’s likely that Rewind The Film and Futurology have replaced it was my least favorite album(s). Ha ha ha. I do wish they had included a version of Everything Will Be with the trombone bit. I still remember hearing the performance of that song from recordings of Glastonbury 2003 with Andy Cato from Groove Armada on trombone. For me, the trombone line made the song and gave a different but interesting feel for the Manics. And I was very disappointed when it was eventually relegated as a b-side with the trombone line removed. Achtung Bookends. With the passage of time, I’ve come to realize the strength of U2’s pre- and post-Baby releases. When their Cole Porter cover got released as part of the Red Hot + Blue compilation in support of ACT UP, it didn’t immediately resonate with me. But within a few weeks, I was playing it on a loop. It’s such a rhythmic, unique, and dark take on “Night and Day.” And it portends the change of direction to come on “Achtung Baby.” Conversely, “Zooropa” is the perfect coda, pushing their Berlin experimentation further. The Pale Fountains’ “(There’s Always) Something On My Mind / Just A Girl” 7-inch single with embossed star. This is the song (Something on my Mind) that started me down a Mick Head rabbit hole, so it’’s nice to finally grab the single. I was telling a friend a couple weeks ago that Head has always been in front of the curve. Synth, jangle pop, and bossa nova shouldn’t work, but they do. He was twee before there was Sarah Records. He made Britpop before Blur, before the term had been coined . But that prescience proved a cyclops curse. Drugs, poor sales, studio fires, the passing of band members, lost master tapes. As I’ve mentioned before, I’m a sucker for kooky formats. Records with UV printing aren’t an entirely new thing. I know Music On Vinyl did it with their reissue of Silverchair’s Frogstomp album back in 2022. But I’m not a Silverchair fan and it wasn’t cheap enough to warrant forking out the money for. But I’m a Floyd fan and this seemed like a good time to grab a record with a UV print. It’s nice looking. The album sounds pretty good because it’s made with regular vinyl (unlike picture discs). Sadly, it didn’t come with the same inserts as the original album (and subsequent reissues) so no postcards, stickers, etc. There’s a poster included but it’s different from the two posters that came with original. So I won’t be trading in my other copies. Might end up being my playing copy though. Finally got this in. Been feeling FOMO since I saw that Numero had shipped their orders weeks early. I’m bummed I wasn’t able to get the Numero variant with the autographed photo but this other colored vinyl variant still looks nice. The three songs here are pretty damn awesome. Very much of its time (1993) and one of the few American shoegazer bands that got it right. It’s so crazy that they were from San Jose. Makes me wonder if they ever played any shows in SF or Oakland. No download card but I reached out to Numero with my receipt and they shared a download with me, which was nice of them! I randomly recommended that Numero seek out and maybe try to reissue some of Super Thirty-One’s music. S31 were a shoegaze band from L.A. They were friends with Slowdive and opened for them most times they played in LA. There’s footage of Slowdive in the studio in the 90s and Nick Chaplin is wearing a Super 31 shirt. Who knows if Numero saw my reco.
