Salamati The safety kits distributed to the workers on site consisted on a safety reflective jacket, a helmet, a steel water bottle, an electrol drink and a couple of buttermilk tetrapacks to beat the summer and prevent an accident from being fatal. The workers ranged from young men to middle aged mothers. The mentorship around the importance of the safety kit imparted knowledge to the workers in scenarios of hazards. Back to black n white + Lino cutting for levs summer shows T shirt! Here’s the process in reverse - finished prints first then cutting the block, then back to the drawing + getting that in reverse + transferring it to the lino. I draw the image out freehand onto A3 paper then put that on a light box + trace everything in reverse on the other side. Then I use old school carbon paper to transfer that reverse image onto the lino. Then I draw it out yet again - in marker this time- and then, at last, get straight to cutting! A lot of it- what’s gonna be black, what’s gonna be white etc I do as I’m going …. Keep a bit of spontaneity in there! Anyway, I’ve done a small run of prints which will be available to buy here as soon as I post the actual image, as soon as it’s dry. I’ll explain the whole story behind the crazy image then! Here’s a few details I forgot to post from my latest effort a few days ago. It’s based around a story from the life of st Columba of Iona (d593/7), but including all the events going on in my life as I painted it… my usual modus operandi! As u can see from the painting dates on the back of the canvas it was started as the Israel/Palestinian crisis began, so war comes into it. Quite suitably as Columba was called ‘an island soldier’ - which is also in there but in the Latin of his original early medieval biography. There’s also a dedication to my friend’s lovely old cat Edwina, who passed away at that time. There’s multitude more layers too, so if you’re interested just check out my prior posts on this work. As I think I mentioned before it’s mixed media (acrylic, oil paint + pens) on canvas, 1x1.5m. Signed, dated + orientated on the reverse - as shown above…. Final painting of st Brendan of Birr’s vision of st Columba following the latter’s excommunication at the synod of Tailtiu, co Meath in the early 560s… Info from Columba’s biographer in the v late seventh century. He explains Brendan seeing Colum flanked by angels + preceded by a column of fire. The vision helped to revoke Colum’s excommunication but he still went into exile soon after, leaving Ireland + going to Iona in the western isles of Scotland, becoming the famous founder saint of the monastery there. I started the picture as the Israel/palestine conflict broke out, so there’s text relevant to that in there with all the sixth/seventh century stuff! + a tribute to my friends beautiful cat Edwina who sadly passed around that time too. My flanking angels r considerably more Old Testament than Adomnan - the writer - imagined I’m sure! Anyway, it’s the usual mash up of all my interests, historical + modern! Detail from my latest! Back in the early 560’s St Columba (soon to be of Iona) was excommunicated for ‘some trivial + quite excusable offences’ according to Adomnan, his later biographer. Columba attended the synod, in the Irish midlands, that accused him + was accordingly shunned by all. Except one! St Brendan, founder of the early church of Birr. When asked by his colleagues why he honoured the excommunicate, Brendan explained that God had granted him vision to see Columba flanked by angels + proceeded by a fiery column of light - hardly attributions granted a sinner. With Brendan (who was an elder saint of the previous generation) asserting Columba’s holiness his excommunication was duly lifted by all…. Gutted to report the death earlier this week of Pete Loveday, friend + legendary underground comic artist. I first met Pete on the travelling + free festival circuit scene back in the 80’s where his comics like Big Trip Travel Agency perfectly captured the anarchic mood of the times + all the various strange subcultures mixing together at those old rave-ups! Levellers were indeed honoured by Pete around then, who included us in Big Trip 2 - we were much more proud to be in that than on the cover of the NME etc, a fact our then manager found utterly perplexing haha! We’re still really honoured by it now! I got portrayed as a psychedelic headless chicken with bass guitar so what’s not to love?! Latterly Pete contributed each year to the Beautiful Days festival programme. Producing a beautiful colour painting each year repping the culture, like the example shown here. Sorry you’re gone Pete, u were an inspiration. Finished painting of st Patrick I started a couple of years ago! The names around him are some of his own alternative monickers in Irish history + the others are of possibly contemporary missionaries working in Ireland at the same time (fifth century AD) as he was. “Ego Patricius” is the intro to the longer + more famous of the saint’s letters, it means simply “I am Patrick …” Other stuff going on in there records a car crash I was in just before starting the picture + strange symbols drawn on the pavement outside my place where the council were re-routing things underground! + the heat… was a hot summer beginning for this one! Patrick is centre, shown with antlers - as I always say because of an ancient legend about him turning into a deer at one point …. See many previous posts on my pages here for all that. I think that’s most of it covered - The usual mash up of my historical interest + contemporary diary painting! For anyone interested in the historical Patrick there’s a good documentary on you tube called ‘Patrick the renegade saint’. It was made by Irish TV a few years ago now but has reputable, contemporary scholars talking about the saints life + legend in an easily digestible + fun way…. Just a handful of photos from Exiled Buskers gig yesterday at The Great Escape/Black Gull yesterday! Insta won’t let me tag them the way I usually would for some unknown reason. We each had a few things that didn’t quite go the way we planned which we can probably all put down the same thing (couldn’t quite hear ourselves properly) but otherwise we had an incredible gig and what a turn out! And absolutely loved seeing my little brother and sister in the audience watching me with their beautiful mama while I sing! So many people I didn’t expect to see but came along to support not only us, but a very worthwhile cause too! I’ve just finished a couple of paintings :) One based on the story of St Columba of Iona + this one on the associations of St Patrick of Armagh. Here’s a quick detail from that one while I make up my mind they are both indeed done - after two years on/off work (I date every session on the back so I know exactly when they’ve been worked on) on this one, and 6-9 months on the other …. I basically work in quick bursts of 2-3 hours each, usually. Let that dry overnight- or longer if it’s oil paint - then return for more the next day… building up layers till it’s done. That’s the idea anyway! I’ll disclose full stories (as I see em anyway) of each work as I post em up- the historical background + my intermingled, contemporary diary reports…. This is Bella, my sister’s wonderful little black cat who sadly passed away today. She was so friendly + charming, a proper little character. Lost too soon on a main road so far from the house that no one ever presumed she went over there… So, no art today. It’s all about remembering Bella + her awesome catty ways. My sis n family r obviously broken by the news, so thoughts go out to them. I’m remembering the times I got to spend with Bella.
