Coral fairy garden. A delightful population of western firmoss, Huperzia occidentalis happily expanding clonal colonies down a steep seepage slope in blankets of stairstep moss, Hylocomium splendens in the Cascades not far from where I live. Not seen a population of H. occidentalis like this since my undergraduate years and there were even gemmae already rooting in the moss surrounding the mature sporophytes. Always a pleasure to stumble across new populations of this firmoss.

In the higher altitudes of Colombia’s Cordillera Oriental, a surprising diversity of plants thrive on rocky outcrops. One of the plants that caught my attention the most was Huperzia brevifolia (formally Phlegmariurus brevifolius) and a Lycopodium species. Both of these plants belong to the Lycopodiaceae, an ancient family of homosporous lycophytes that diverged about ~400 million years ago during the early Devonian and are closely related to Selaginella. Lycophytes are a true glimpse into our planets distant floristic past, and are the oldest surviving group of vascular plants that we can still see surviving in nature today. Now they only form a small and inconspicuous group of plants in habitat, but they were once the dominant group of plants in major ecosystems for more than 40 million years. In the Carboniferous for example, some ancestral lycophytes were even forest-forming trees more than 40 metres (130 ft) tall. Some interesting orchids, asters and bromeliads were present in this high elevation habitat too including the massive Puya goudotiana #Lycophytes #Huperzia #Huperziabrevifolia #Phlegmariurus #Phlegmariurusbrevifolius #Lycopodiaceae #nature #botany #evolution #colombia #cordillera #andes #explore #botanica #puya #bromeliad

I'm thrilled to own a first edition (2024) of this beautiful field guide authored by Dr. Emily Sessa, the director of the New York Botanical Garden. Emily is a brilliant scientist active in the American Fern and Botanical Societies. We overlapped as graduate students at UW-Madison while she was becoming the expert on Dryopteris ferns. She is now one of the leading fern experts in the world. The range maps are great, and the guide is packed with beautiful photos and reticulograms (!). I love that the key includes range color-cues to guide you through 305 species in eastern North America. The introductory sections look promising for guiding beginners and updating experienced botanists on fern biology, morphology, and evolutionary relationships among taxa. I'm excited to put this to use this growing season and to compare it to Welby Smith's lovely MN fern and lycophyte guide (2023) for use in our region. But seriously, Sessa's guide may be all I need. Wāwaeʻiole - Palhinhaea cernua • The name wāwaeʻiole translates to rat’s foot, an appropriate name seeing the claw like leaves arranged around the branches of these sprawling plants. • This indigenous club moss is found from low to high elevations across all the main Hawaiian islands in wet forests. While common in native areas, It is still persisting in some fairly degraded habitats and, on Maui, can readily be found growing along Hāna highway the further east you travel. • • • • • #lycophytes #Palhinhaea #wawaeiole #nativeplants #clubmoss #maui #hawaii #ig_macro #canonphotography #canon_photos #canon_official #canonusa #canonmacro #endangeredspecies #macro #botany #portrait #remainsofarainbow #biodiversity #macrophotography #100mmmacro #nativeflora #portraitphotography #zpezzillo #teamcanon #macroworld #macro_brilliance #plantsofinstagram #macro_captures

The Fan Clubmoss (aka running cedar) Diphasiastrum digitatum is a delightful Christmas time find and is native to the forests of the eastern U.S. While it looks like a cedar tree this is actually a descendent of a group of vascular plants that evolved around 410 million years ago (the modern cedar is likely only ~50 million years old). The clubmoss has spores that come out of the cone shaped strobili that are highly flammable - the spores were once collected as a primitive flash powder. Also once over harvested for Christmas greenery, populations have largely recovered and can be found carpeting forest floors in clonal colonies - but be warned they don’t take very well to being transplanted so leave them be! #clubmoss #fanclubmoss #runningcedar #lycophytes #livingfossils #nativeplants #nativeplantsofnorthamerica

As the Holiday season nears, I’d like to consider Lycophytes or club mosses as valuable members of our ecosystem. Like mosses, their evolutionary lineage is ancient, arising before gymnosperms and before all flowering plants. They tend to be residents of fairly undisturbed habitats and are characterized by the cone like structure called a strobilus, they produce to make spores. They grow slowly, which makes them a rather unsustainable choice for holiday decorations. Please consider wreaths from cut branches as an alternative to club moss decorations. By doing so, we can help keep this diverse group of venerable green plants part of the New England landscape for future generations. —Director of Horticulture Uli Lorimer Photo: Club moss collage © Uli Lorimer #nativeplanttrust #newengland #nativeplants #newenglandnativeplants #clubmosses #lycophytes #ecology #plantsandanimals #floraandfauna #animalsneedplants #plantsneedanimals #leavelycophytes #ancientplants #spores #sporophytes #forestplants #discoverplants #evergreenplants

2023 Was the year of the early tracheophytes! Lycophytes, horsetails, and ferns are primitive plants that produce spores instead of seeds. Spores grow into a gametophyte which produces the eggs and sperm. The zygote then grows into a new sporophyte which is the recognizable form of the plant. I fudged the evolutionary succession of these plants as pictured a bit and put Sceptridium first because it was the highlight of my year! It is in the Ophioglossaceae (aka, adder’s-tongue family) which had been a bucketlist group of mine. They are some of the most primitive ferns (see pic 8). I love the leathery texture of the leaf, hence the common name “leathery grape fern”. This plant’s gametophyte stage is subterranean and parasitic upon a fungus. The lycopods, Dendrolycopodium obscurum and Huperzia lucidula, are also parasitic in the gametophyte stage. Lycopodiaceae traces its origins back some 400ish million years, to the dawn of vascular plants. I’m always grateful that this lineage still exists because it shows us a snapshot of ancient plant diversity. Selaginella is also a Lycophyte but it’s in a different order. It’s monoecious and produces male and female spores which grow into either a male or female gametophyte. This is sorta similar to how seed plants reproduce(pollen and ovules). The gametophytes are also interesting because they don’t ever fully emerge from the spore. Finally, I was fortunate to find not 1 but 2 new Horsetail species (Equisetum). Pictured are Equisetum variegatum, E. sylvaticum, and E. hyemale (not a new one but still cool). I’ll never not be excited to see horsetail. They’re probably the most ancient ferns and are so unlike any of their distant kin. Looking forward to the 2024 botany season, I have a really neat target plant I hope to find and share called Isoetes (order: Isoetales, class: Lycopodiopsida). #plants #2023 #botany #ferns #tracheophytes #evolution #science #ecology #ophioglossaceae #sceptridium #lycophytes #dendrolycopodiumobscurum #huperzialucidula #selaginella #Equisetum #equisetumvariegatum #equisetumsylvaticum #equisetumhyemale #nature #nativeplants #paleobotany

The largest fossil of Lepidodendron I’ve ever found. My favorite extinct tree! These prehistoric trees were nothing like modern trees, not closely related to any woody plants of the modern world. They would have looked like something off of an alien world to us! These trees lived between 360-250 million years ago, and covered multiple continents. They were evergreen wetland trees that grew in the tropics and subtropics and could reach sizes of many modern trees. They were much more primitive than modern trees, still using spores for reproduction which limited them to seasonally or broadly wet environments. This combined with a less than ideal water transport system led to their downfall and eventual overtaking by gymnosperms like cycads and conifers. They reproduced via spores which were dispersed by cone-looking structures visually similar to Norway spruce cones today. These were held at the tips of branches usually. The leaves were thin, long, and needle like, and upon falling off they left large leaf scars. It is thought that when immature, they appeared a giant green fuzzy spikes rising up until they reached near mature size, then dichotomously branching. This is very different to modern trees, which some branch alternately and some dichotomously (opposite). The scale pattern that shows up in the fossil record is an imprint of a fallen trunks leaf scars, so sometime hundreds of millions of years ago a tree fell here and all that’s left of it is this giant fossil! This is one of the species that covered Appalachia long ago, and is the reason why we have coal and natural gas! #lakehope #fossil #fossils #fossilcave #lepidodendron #lycophyte #lycopods #lycopod #lycophytes #ancient #fossilplants #plants #plant #carboniferous #explore #hike #appalachia #december #winterhike #winterhikes #botany #carbon #coal #oil #naturalgas #zaleski #ohio #athensohio #athens #seohio

Check this out! Selaginella can fluoresce under black lights. In this case, some pigments in the foliage become excited when hit with long-wave ultraviolet (UV-A) radiation. But, there’s a catch: in Selaginella, the fluorescence of these pigments seems dampened by other pigments at the leaf surface when the foliage is alive, and so this effect is most evident after senescence of the foliage begins. Perhaps a bit like vibrant pigments in autumn leaves. This Selaginella intermedia had stiff foliage, even after senescence and fluoresced marvelously while still maintaining its living form. Cannot stop loving these plants. These creatures are even cool and composed after death. If only this trait were preserved in the fossil record…

This is Selaginella wallacei (Wallace's Spikemoss), a lycophyte I've been growing from a cutting taken several months ago. I took several small cuttings, rooted them on paper towels, and potted them in different media, and this one (in a mix of mostly sand with a tiny bit of compost) is the only one that really thrived! It used to take up less than half the diameter of this pot, and now it's starting to overflow. I'm quite proud of how well it's doing, but also terrified of splitting the plant to move part of it into another container - which is quickly becoming necessary. One day I'm hoping to have several thriving mats of S. wallacei, but for now, this is just the first successful step in a pretty haphazard and difficult experiment. #lycophytes #indoorplants #indoorgarden #pottedplants #selaginella #selaginellawallacei #spikemoss #nativeplants

Leaves evolved many times independently across the plant kingdom. Leaves help with increasing surface area and subsequently increasing photosynthesis. Ghost from a Carboniferous coal swamp. Fossilized forerunners of modern cockroaches often resembled dead leaves and can be found in close proximity to extinct lycopod tree remains in well-preserved coal swamp deposits. Here is one of the largest (and heaviest) cockroaches on Earth today, a female giant peppered roach, Archimandrita tesselata. In size and shape, she is quite similar to the largest Paleozoic roachoids. Contrary to popular belief, roaches before the age of dinosaurs were no larger than cockroaches today. It was mostly extinct griffin-flies (seagull-sized dragonfly relatives) that reached truly gigantic proportions. This specimen is taking a rest on a bed of a modern lycopod, Lycopodium clavatum, just after an exhausting molt to adulthood. She just finished unfurling her translucent wings and her now glassy exoskeleton is still white and soft. In a few hours, her body armor with harden, flushing tan with black speckles.

Reference Bennert, H. 𝑆𝑒𝑙𝑎𝑔𝑖𝑛𝑒𝑙𝑙𝑎 𝑤𝑖𝑙𝑙𝑑𝑒𝑛𝑜𝑤𝑖𝑖 ⊹ Willdenow's spikemoss 🦚🌿 ⊹ Look how gracefully the teal and purple iridescence surround the shades of orange and lime green, creating a wonderful contrast. The shimmering blue hues are structural colors caused by thin-film interference. 💙✨ ⊹ While the exact function of 𝑆𝑒𝑙𝑎𝑔𝑖𝑛𝑒𝑙𝑙𝑎's iridescence remains unknown, the current hypothesis suggests that the blue sheen acts as a photo-protective layer for this shade-adapted plant. The iridescence reflects intense tropical sun-flecks that may occasionally reach the forest floor through the flickering canopy. 🍃 ⊹ My spikemoss died to its roots in my cabinet, and I almost gave up on it. I planted the remains in my propagation box, but then forgot about it for months. To my surprise, the plant had grown many branching stems in total neglect, 100% humidity with zero airflow, very low light levels and growing in pure Sphagnum—very modest conditions indeed. Perhaps this plant is just shy and thrives when left without any attention? ⊹ ⊹ ⊹ #selaginella #selaginellawilldenowii #willdenowsspikemoss #peacockfern #peacockspikemoss #peacockclubmoss #plantiridescence #plantscience #botany #botanicalinspiration #botanist #botanicalphotography #macrophotography #macroplants #sonya5000 #moodyplants #weirdplants #iridiscent #blueplants #sciencecommunication #scicomm #plantscientist #plantsmakepeoplehappy #lycophytes

Finally checked out a spot that my native plant committee has been harping on for years, and I was not disappointed! This area is a part of the Albany pine barrens, and as such has a unique community of plants. These three plants were on my bucket list and the last one was truly a special find. 1. Spiranthes, Orchidaceae. This is my first ever orchid! Orchids are one of the largest families of plants, boasting about 20,000 species. They are monocots in the Asparagales order, and are actually an early diverging family within it. 2. Selaginella, Selaginellaceae. I’ve been doing great with all the cool fern-like organisms I’ve found recently. Selaginella is a kind of Lycophyte which, as a group, are very primitive vascular plants. Like ferns, they reproduce by spores. I’ve found 2/3 lycophytes and the last one, Isoetes, will probably be a hard find. 3. I FOUND A NEW MILKWEED!!!!!! Asclepias amplexicaulis, Apocynaceae. What a shock when I looked down and saw this plant! I knew what it was immediately. I don’t typically get into leaf botany but for a milkweed I’d do anything. The leaves are distinct in that they are clasping the stem and no visible petiole, are glabrous (smooth, lacking hairs), and are thick and fleshy almost a leather-like texture. I found 8 individuals but sadly no fruits. I’m definitely going to return next year to hopefully catch the flowers! #botany #plants #nativeplants #spiranthes #selaginella #asclepias #orchid #lycophytes #milkweed #nature #evolution #ecology

A Spikemoss (Selaginella) I spotted in the field yesterday in Shikoku (Japan). Given it’s vivid blue leaves, I suspect it’s Selaginella willdenowii or a related species. A huge thicket of this species was growing its way into the forest next to an old abandoned house suggesting that it probably originated as a garden escapee many years ago! #botany #botanist #botanical #clubmoss #spikemoss #selaginella #selaginellaceae #lycopod #lycopodiopsida #lycophytes #exoticplants #exoticplant #rareplantspecies #indoorplants #plantgeometry #vascularplant #primitiveplants #ancientplant #fieldbotany #plantcollector #plantdaddy #plantlove #plantlover #japaneseplants #botanizing

Rapid advances in DNA studies have given scientists new understandings of ferns and lycophytes, making books published only a decade ago now obsolete. 'Ferns and Lycophytes of Minnesota' is the first comprehensive presentation of these oldest of land plants in Minnesota. Welby R. Smith, Minnesota state botanist, thoroughly developed this essential guide, illustrated with more than 400 original photographs (most by Richard W. Haug) for anyone interested in learning about and identifying these ubiquitous plants that have fascinated people for centuries. 🌿 This field guide is out this week from University of Minnesota Press. #NewRelease #NewBook #ferns #lycophytes #FieldGuide #nature #plants #botany #wildflowers

It’s me, hi. I’m the problem, it’s me 🎶 Yes, I’m the reason why I have so many plants 😬 This one has been a surprisingly easy to grow. It sits on a shelf and just hangs out. Indirect light and tree fern seems to keep it happy. As I gear up to be away from my plants, the panic of the impending horror that my plant friends will need to endure when watering is starting. What do you do when you’re away from your plants? Also, I’m still in my Taylor era. • • • 🪴: Huperzia SP “triangle tree fern” _______________________________________________ #huperzia #trailingplants #lycophytes #plantsofinstagram #houseplants #plantgram #plants #plantlover #houseplantlove #plantgrowth #houseplantcommunity #houseplantsofinstagram #plantsplantsplants #plantstagram #plantcollection #indoorplants #urbanjungleplant #plantstyling #indoorgrowing #plantsofinsta #plantgang #plantfluencer #houseofplantlovers #urbanjungle #pausewithplants #plantparenthood #iloveplants #plantobsession

A cultivar of Selaginella tamariscina, one of several rosetted resurrection spikemosses from Southeast Asia. This species and its relatives are convergent (evolved in parallel) with the resurrection Selaginella of Mexico and the southwestern United States in many respects. These also shrivel to a crisp for part of the year, unfurling to grow during the rainy season. Instead of growing in deserts, S. tamariscina and its kin grows along rocky slopes and mountaintops that are seasonally dry.

I went for a hike last Friday and met a brand new genus of lycophyte! This is Huperzia occidentalis, which has a bunch of common names but belongs to a group commonly known as the fir-mosses (though they are not mosses!). You can see the pale, yellowish sporangia on this one under the leaves; like other lycophytes, Huperzia have no flowers or seeds, and use spores (and cloning) to reproduce instead! #plants #cryptogams #bcwildlife #flora #westvancouver #inaturalist #huperzia #lycophytes #nativeplants
