Il existe deux sortes de dépendants affectifs: le DA insécure et soumis qui s'infantilise, se sacrifie et s'expose aux abus d'un conjoint dominant qui ne trouve aucune limite ni résistance à l'accomplissement de ses désirs, et le DA contrôlant qui se montre au contraire rigide et exigeant et qui peut glisser vers une forme de maltraitance à l'égard de son partenaire s'il ne prend garde ou ne se fait pas aider. Le DA contrôlant ne doit pas être confondu avec le pervers narcissique qui entre en relation pour faire souffrir l'autre et en retirer du plaisir; le DA contrôlant veut vivre une histoire parfaite et a peur de souffrir lorsqu'il tombe amoureux ou se met en couple: il a souvent vécu la trahison ou l'abandon dans le passé et cherche à sécuriser le périmètre de sa relation pour ne plus souffrir. Par souci d'anticipation du danger, le DA contrôlant surveille son partenaire, l'interroge, parfois l'isole, persuadé que le danger est partout.
