😩😩 I NEED MORE SLEEP! 😩😩 Can you relate? 😴 Sleep has the ability to impact our health in a multitude of ways due to the fact that it has touchpoints with every single system of the body. Whether it’s cardiovascular efficiency, endocrine balance, metabolic flexibility and regulation, or neurological enhancement we can see sleep’s influence. 😴 The first element to the link between sleep and our health lies in the correlations we see between sleep and mortality. Even when we control for other variables, we see a direct association between sleep and mortality, where the lowest risk lies in the range of 7-8 hours of sleep. 🦠 Next, we can look into the association that we see between sleep and the risk for the major chronic diseases we deal with in modern society (i.e. Cardiovascular disease, Alzehimer’s, Diabetes, Cancer). We also see higher incidences of obesity and depression in those individuals not getting good sleep quality and duration. 💤 Sleep plays a vital role in multiple elements of our immune system. Firstly, sleep impacts our adaptive immunity which is essentially your ability to fight off pathogens. For example, those getting less sleep are 3x more likely to succumb to the common cold. The other way in which sleep impacts the immune response is our innate immunity, the actual immune response to something we’re actively fighting. Under the Kolumbusplatz S-Bahn bridge over the Humboltdstraße The idea behind this mural has to do with the anxiety, stress and restlessness that the modern way of life causes on a daily basis. Thinking in particular about the endless race to keep up with the rhythm of the system in which we are embedded: a system based on the satisfaction of our needs, which are very often induced and artificial (the product of habits or unexamined beliefs or born of indulgence and fears). Such a system wants us to always be in need: If the needs are always new (or constantly renewed), the search towards their satisfaction will be endless. The title recalls the legendary, never-ending search for the Holy Grail, a mythical object that promises wealth and eternal life, in contrast to a society that suffers from its natural state and always see itself lacking. Lack is an illusion, a myth that I hope will be dispelled. Abstract creatures with large eyes and pained expressions mingle restlessly and incessantly in a constantly moving composition. Their attention is drawn to precious and magical objects, painted in shining gold and taking the form of platonic bodies. The Platonic solids, whose suggestive regularity has led to their intense study since antiquity, and gold, the noble and most coveted metal par excellence, become the symbol of a fundamental object of research for which no rest is intended. The strange figures are also in black and white and, through the absence of colour, represent a more universal level of action that cannot be directly attributed to a particular individual. He is always absorbed in glorifying the Supreme Lord because by broadcasting the holy name and fame of the Supreme Lord, the polluted atmosphere of the world will change, and as a result of propagating the transcendental literatures like Śrīmad-Bhāgavatam , people will become sane in their transactions. When there are too many materialistic activities by the people in general all over the world, there is no wonder that a person or a nation attacks another person or nation on slight provocation. That is the rule of this Age of Kali or quarrel. The atmosphere is already polluted with corruption of all description, and everyone knows it well. There are so many unwanted literatures full of materialistic ideas of sense gratification. In many countries there are bodies appointed by the state to detect and censor obscene literature. This means that neither the government nor the responsible leaders of the public want such literature, yet it is in the marketplace because the people want it for sense gratification. The people in general want to read (that is a natural instinct), but because their minds are polluted they want such literatures. Under the circumstances, transcendental literature like Śrīmad-Bhāgavatam will not only diminish the activities of the corrupt mind of the people in general, but also it will supply food for their hankering after reading some interesting literature. No one wants to die, nor does anyone want to become old or diseased. The law of nature, however, does not allow anyone immunity from old age, disease or death. Nor has the advancement of material knowledge solved these problems. Material science can discover the nuclear bomb to accelerate the process of death, but it cannot discover anything that can protect man from the cruel hands of old age, disease and death. From the Purāṇas we learn of the activities of Hiraṇyakaśipu, a king who was very much advanced materially. Wanting to conquer cruel death by his material acquisitions and the strength of his nescience, he underwent a type of meditation so severe that the inhabitants of all the planetary systems became disturbed by his mystic powers. He forced the creator of the universe, the demigod Brahmā, to come down to him. He then asked Brahmā for the benediction of becoming amara, by which one does not die. Brahmā said that he could not award the benediction because even he, the material creator who rules all planets, is not amara. As confirmed in the Bhagavad-gītā (8.17), Brahmā lives a long time, but that does not mean he is immortal. Śrī Īśopaniṣad instructs us not to make one-sided attempts to win the struggle for existence. A man should lead a healthy life with a sound mind just to realize vidyā, true knowledge, which is the aim of human life. This mantra offers a comparative study of vidyā and avidyā. Avidyā, or ignorance, is undoubtedly dangerous, but vidyā, or knowledge, is even more dangerous when mistaken or misguided. This mantra of Śrī Īśopaniṣad is more applicable today than at any time in the past. Modern civilization has advanced considerably in the field of mass education, but the result is that people are more unhappy than ever before because of the stress placed on material advancement to the exclusion of the most important part of life, the spiritual aspect. As far as vidyā is concerned, the first mantra has explained very clearly that the Supreme Lord is the proprietor of everything and that forgetfulness of this fact is ignorance. The more a man forgets this fact of life, the more he is in darkness. In view of this, a godless civilization directed toward the so-called advancement of education is more dangerous than a civilization in which the masses of people are less "educated." Of the different classes of men — karmīs, jñānīs and yogīs — the karmīs are those who are engaged in the activities of sense gratification. In the modern civilization, 99.9 percent of the people are engaged in the activities of sense gratification under the flags of industrialism, economic development, altruism, political activism, and so on. All these activities are more or less based on satisfaction of the senses, to the exclusion of the kind of God consciousness described in the first mantra. In the language of the Bhagavad-gītā (7.15), people who are engaged in gross sense gratification are mūḍhas — asses. The ass is a symbol of stupidity. Those who simply engage in the profitless pursuit of sense gratification are worshiping avidyā, according to Śrī Īśopaniṣad.
