Stress is never good, as far as Iโ€™m concerned. Unfortunately for me, It can trigger symptoms of my schizophrenia. Most people deal with occasional stress, but for me itโ€™s as common as breathing sometimes. Iโ€™ll fixate on what might seem to others as a small nuisance. Yesterday, I attended a wedding sober for the first time. Iโ€™m working on addressing my social anxiety, and normally, a few glasses would calm my nerves, but being honest with myself, I knew I wouldnโ€™t stop at just a couple. So, I used several tools to help me stay strong throughout the day. I drove there, and even though I couldโ€™ve changed my mind and taxied home, this was the critical thing that stopped me from having even a sip of a drink. I knew if I had even a glass, Iโ€™d want more, so I refused even the small amount you can have and legally drive. It was my cousinโ€™s wedding, so I felt comfortable with many guests as a lot of them were family. I made a point to catch up and have beautiful conversations with lots of people I hadnโ€™t seen for a long time. I wore my dream dress and did my hair and makeup so I felt confident about my appearance. This helped massively with the self-conscious feeling that comes with attending large events (especially sober), feeling like everyoneโ€™s looking at you. I felt happy enough in my appearance that this feeling sunk into the background. I ate everything I fancied without holding back. This was a lovely feeling in itself, as I usually would try not to overindulge, feeling guilty if I had too much of anything. Yesterday, I let myself off feeling bad about anything I ate, telling myself that since I wasnโ€™t drinking, I could treat myself to whatever I fancied. Iโ€™m working on my relationship with food, and this was a great help. All of these things helped me stay sober throughout the day. It was a long, full-on day. I was there for 12 hours in total. I rested when needed, and despite my tired legs and chronic fatigue, I pushed through (since it was a special occasion and I have a few days to rest) and even managed a dance at the end. I woke up today feeling tired and happy. Pleased Iโ€˜d gotten everything I wanted out of the day and able just to let my body recover today (rather than trying to do something productive to feel worthwhile). No hangover, no anxiety, no shame. As far as firsts go, my first sober wedding was a huge success ๐Ÿฅฐ #sobercurious #soberwedding #socialanxiety
