A family Naming Ceremony with special significance today, officially welcoming the marvellous George David Innes alongside my brother Dave and sister-in-law Nic. Dave and Nic’s wedding in 2012 was incredible. It was my first Humanist wedding, and the one that inspired me to become a Humanist Celebrant. Almost 9 years ago to the day I carried out a Naming Ceremony for their firstborn son Alfie. We even thought they couldn’t understand words, just the tone of our voice. Now we know they have a huge vocabulary! They understand most of what we’re saying. Ashley Mai - Why I Chose Family Medicine (3/3) During the second year of medical school, I became involved with the Texas Academy of Family Physicians, serving as the student leader of the TAFP Resident and Student Leader Forum. Ashley Mai - Why I Chose Family Medicine (2/3) Going into medical school, I was confident that I would be going into primary care, and as I did my rotations, it reaffirmed my love for treating people of all ages, from kids to the elderly. I also loved delivering babies during my OB rotation and seeing moms at their prenatal visits. Family medicine, with its emphasis on comprehensive care across the lifespan, allows me to establish long-term relationships with patients, to walk alongside them through the ups and downs of life, and to empower them to take control of their health and well-being. I remember one elderly female patient who brought in 31 bottles of medications, consisting of at least 4 different antibiotics, expired medications from 2019, and 3 different Metformin bottles of various dosages. Her A1c was over 10 and blood pressure was in the 170s/80s. Even as a medical student, I was entrusted to sit with her and sort her medications, throwing out over 20 bottles and translating the prescriptions to Spanish. Fast forward 4 months, with help of the behavior health counseling, pharmacy, and family medicine team, her blood pressure lowered to 128/72 and her A1c dropped 3 points. Ashley Mai - Why I Chose Family Medicine (1/3) Growing up, I was surrounded by family members in healthcare. My dad is a podiatrist, my mom and aunt are dentists, and my grandfather is a family physician. My mother opened her practice when I was 3 years old, so as I grew up, so did her practice. I remember spending afternoons at her office, being introduced to all her patients and having a first-eye perspective on what it was like to be a dentist. As I reached high school, I knew teeth weren’t for me. However, I grew to appreciate and value the deep and genuine relationships my mother had with her patients. Once I decided I was going into medicine to be a doctor, I knew that these long term relationships were something I needed to have in my future specialty. My grandfather is a big part of the reason why I chose family medicine. He is the epitome of a servant-hearted person and is a true advocate for his patients. Still practicing at age 91, he dedicates his life to providing quality healthcare to those who are often marginalized or overlooked by society, recognizing that access to healthcare is a fundamental human right that should be afforded to all. He even taught himself Spanish to better communicate with his patients and tailors treatment plans to each patient’s economic circumstance. The National Day of Reason was initiated in 2003 by the American Humanist Association and other secular advocates to counter the National Day of Prayer and to affirm our commitment to the constitutional separation of religion and government. I will once again share with you some of my struggles that are probably the same for you and for many other people, even if you find yourself on the other side of coin. Humans exploit humans. That's just how humanity works. Such a clear and simple thing, yet it took me almost 40 years to understand. Some make other people work hard instead of working hard themselves. Others make people buy objects, giving them money, fruits of their work, and so on. We are all either exploiters or exploited; there is no third option. I have always been against exploitation, but it's something that I have still done, even though I long believed I didn't. This stems from the time I quit working in advertising, where I exploited humans by manipulating their psychology through ads. I thought if I became an artist, I would instead help people to stay aware of many manipulations, but how stupid I was to think so! Because most people would never become interested in art. They simply can't because they don't have enough time for that. Only wealthy people may be drawn to art because they have to spend their extra time and money. Switching from graphic design to art, I have still found myself exploiting. The only thing that changed is that I no longer exploit masses. I have finally continued existing the same way, and I feel there is no way out for me, like for all other humans. We don't have as many choices as we imagine. I would now say maybe we have no choices at all.
