My world is quiet this week. Almost as quiet as my home. I started this business when I was in the stage of sleepless nights, nursing babes, chubby little thighs, and three little sidekicks always within arms reach. I was in the throes of being needed; entirely consumed with motherhood. Gosh, that was a season. It was heavy sometimes, challenging for sure but it was filled with the best and happiest days of my entire life. Days spent with my favourite little people doing all of the quiet, lovely, simple things together. No plans, no places to be, just me and them and a happy, untidy home — books, a sink full of dishes, princess and superhero and grinch costumes; stuffed animals and vet kits, baby strollers and overflowing laundry baskets; puzzle pieces and crayons and unmade beds waiting to be crawled back into for afternoon naps. Those days were busier maybe and with less time for me. I was more tired then and recognized I was missing pieces of myself but those cracks were filled in with the sound of their breath as they slept on my chest, the warmth and weight of them on my hip because they wanted to be as close as possible, them calling for “mama” because I was the lucky one they wanted first when they woke. My babies and toddlers filled in empty spaces with stories and kisses and “I love you”s. Those pieces of me that were lost in motherhood were found — in motherhood. I think those are the pieces that ache now, in the quiet. I know the days can feel long and seem repetitive but one can also find comfort there, even magic. As with the cycles of the moon, the balance of nature and life, the flowers that bloom, the seasons. There is magic in it all. It’s been an emotional week for me, one spent going through old photos and feeling everything I need to feel. It’s a surge of loss and fulfillment that comes in waves and sometimes sweeps me under. The freedom that comes as they grow feels foreign and my heart hasn’t yet been able to fully embrace it but I will. For now, I’m ever so grateful to have had the privilege of losing myself and finding myself in the first season of 𝒕𝒉𝒆𝒎.
