Tried mindfulness practices yet still feel anxious? 🙋🏻 This simple exercise is for you! (SAVE FOR REFERENCE) Below is one practice you can do RIGHT NOW to reduce anxiety and reprogram your brain into safety. Anxiety is really just a nervous system state. Under normal circumstances, anxiety is intended to keep us safe and ensure our survival. Unfortunately, our bodies can become frozen in anxiety - even when we're totally safe! Our bodies tell our brains if we are safe or not and then the brain will believe we're in danger. That's why the BODY (not the mind) is the key to reducing anxiety! 🤯 While thought-based therapies can be helpful, they're typically not enough on their own. We need to help our nervous system become better at regulating by discharging the stress. The cool thing is, you don't even need to know the exact root cause of WHERE your anxiety comes from - you can still actually rewire your brain because of neuroplasticity. Try this easy practice to help you relax and shift into a state where you're more present (from the book: "Accessing the Healing Power of the Vagus Nerve" by Stanley Roseberg): 1️⃣ Sit in a comfy position. 2️⃣ Bring your right hand to the top of your head. Tip your right ear towards your right shoulder (your neck is at roughly 45 degrees). 3️⃣ Tilt your eyes up towards to left. Don't strain, just breathe into it. Let out sighs if they naturally come. 4️⃣ Hold for at least 30 secs. 5️⃣ Then repeat on the opposite side. How do you feel after doing this simple practice? We’re going against the grain here on the topic of STRESS, but hear us out… Life as an adult can be a whirlwind of responsibilities, deadlines, and endless to-do lists. We get it, and we see 100s of patients a week JUST. LIKE. YOU. 😊 Stress, whether physical or emotional, is a normal and HEALTHY part of life. In fact, we wouldn’t survive as a species without it! So, why does stress get such a bad reputation? Why does everyone seem to just post about ways to “get rid of stress”? The downside… When stress builds up and we aren’t properly discharging it like our bodies were designed to do, it can lead to muscle tension, headaches, and even interfere with your sleep patterns. Not to mention being short-tempered, having a twitchy eye, or > insert however stress manifests for you < (seriously- tell us in the comments below)! There are a lot of ways to discharge stress daily (hello, moving our bodies!) but the cool thing about chiropractic adjustments is that they focus on optimizing nervous system function. Pelvic floor rehab isn’t a bunch of kegels… at least not when you work with me ☺️ Yes this is pelvic floor physical therapy. And is a home exercise program I gave a patient recently for exercise induced bladder leakage. Her biggest issue was leaking with exercises like high knees and lateral jumping movements - skaters specifically. And I found through her exam that she needed more work on her single leg stability and coordination. Step 1: a brief mind-body connection to prepare her body Step 2: add movement Step 3: add challenge (for her she needed speed/balance) Step 4: add movement WITH challenge (even I struggle every now and then 😆) This is just an example and her early phase of SOME of her rehab. Our prefrontal cortex makes us human. It influences our personality, our goals, values, ability to plan, and sense of self and is necessary for healthy interpersonal relationships and decision-making. 😊 It essentially takes our "animal" instincts and sorts them to be rational and aids in impulse control. According to an *article in Nature Reviews Neuroscience, "Exposure to even quite mild uncontrollable stress causes a rapid impairment in prefrontal function in animals and humans. This might have survival value when we are in danger but be maladaptive when the situation requires higher order or complex responses. Thus, uncontrollable stress switches control of behavior from the thoughtful PFC to the more primitive conditioned responses of the amygdala." @ drmoniqueandrews explains its implications this way: "... during a traumatic experience, our brain drops into survival mode. Our amygdala hijacks our prefrontal cortex so that we can rely on our instincts rather than having to think our way through a traumatic or life threatening experience. The problem is only the cortex can tell time. Subcortical areas like the amygdala and brainstem survival structures can’t tell time! This is why when we are triggered it doesn’t feel like a memory. All temporal context is removed and we feel as though what we are feeling in our bodies is our current reality."
