“Either write something worth reading or read something worth writing.” -Ben Franklin During the commencement speech, 3 hopes were shared for us: To expand our potential past that which is our academic career; to travel; and to diversity our friend circles. Big travels are coming for me and as far as age goes, my friend circle is diverse. What about that first one though? That was just one more of those calls I’ve had whispered in my ear this semester. Throughout the semester, soft whispers, trickling in slowly. “I was a psych major, now I’m an English professor,” The dragonfly quote on the NMU writing page. The pieces I wrote for class being hyped up. The silent urge to write. The vocal urge to write. Just the urge to write. It caught hold of me. It had my grasp. It has my grasp. It made me resent school though, I was too far in to follow those whispers. Psychology is weird but psychology is amazing. Learning the interconnectedness of the human brain, the mind, is amazing. Mysterious but amazing. That fascination started to fade, to feel more like a chore, more like something I had to do not something I wanted to do, it felt forced, not interesting. Not amazing. It felt wrong. It feels wrong. It is wrong. I’ve been searching for these words for a while. I’ve been looking for how to say, without being cocky, that despite the fact I’m smart enough, despite the fact I graduated summa cum laude with my B.S. in psychology, despite the fact I know I could do it, I can’t. I can’t continue with a journey that feels so wrong. I can’t deny my dreams. Somehow the commencement speech and the dragonfly that loved on me the morning of graduation, who stayed with me as I walked the beach was the signal I needed. I wanted. I searched for. What’s next? I’m not sure. But I do know what’s next includes words. It includes spewing my words into the abyss. It includes chasing that flame, that fire, that spirit, that which almost went out when I thought I was beholden to one thing. In my 22 years of life, the Lord has blessed me with the ability to accomplish many things, but this moment trumps all. I pride myself in chasing the unknown, and proving not only to myself but to others that whatever you put your mind to, you will accomplish and achieve more than you could ever comprehend, if you apply yourself. You remain humble, steadfast, and resilient no matter how hard life gets, stay prayed up, trust God’s work and things always get better. But you have to do the work. There were numerous paths I could have chosen, but God took me on a journey that honestly has become incomprehensible. At 19 I started my first LLC. By 22 I became the first person in my family to earned a Bachelor’s Degree. I am a firm believer in “You are the change.” Taking this risk was far more difficult than I had imagined but to have accomplished this, in the presence of the Lord, my family and friends, I can’t say thank you enough for the love and support. I think back to the beginning of 2023 when I had to create a gofundme in order to finish my college career. Not knowing if I’d be able to make it to this moment. To not only defy the odds, but to also change the narrative in our society specifically within our African-American Male community, it is an honor and a blessing to have accomplished such a milestone. Thank you @northernmichiganu for serving me and helping me become the best version of myself. Thank you for showing me what it is to have faith in the unknown and trust in your abilities no matter the circumstances. Every staff member, partnering student body, friendships I’ve made, (my art gang)! Thank you for accepting me, opening my eyes to a new way of life and helping me find my God given gifts. I am forever grateful for the relationships built in the 906! If only the younger me knew the man he would become. BUT I THINK WE AIN’T DONE YET! Graduation Day 🎓 It's been four incredible years at @northernmichiganu with @nmu_biology I've had amazing experiences, from three years as a Resident Advisor in @nmu_cedarhall to three summers in South Dakota as a Naturalist. We proudly present to you Dr. Werner Conradie and his thesis entitled: "'Herpetofaunal diversity and affiliation of the Okavango river basin with a specific focus on the Angolan headquaters.' This study aimed to document and quantifty the herbetal faunal diversity and endimism of South Eastern Angola, one of the most poorly known regions in africa. During the project more than 2000 records were documented includinhg 15 species never before recorded in Angola, as well as the description of 8 new species. Numerous undescribed species were idenified, long standing taxonomic issues were resolved, and various taxonomic ajustments were emphasised. Hightened endimism was found mainly concerntrated around the headquaters of the Okavango river basin thus highlighting a higher conservation importance. This thesis contrubuted greatly to the growing knowledge of a neglected region of Africa" A PHD is no easy feat, a lot of time and effort is poured into your work. Today was a day full of celebration as we hosted the April 2024 graduation ceremony on Nelson Mandela University George Campus. A huge congratulations to all our students who graduated today, we are very proud of your achievements: The department extends a special congratulations to Dr. Werner Conradie who received his PHD today. Our PHD candidates commit a lot of time, passion and effort to their degrees, and we would therefore like to recognize this as an outstanding achievement. We are also very proud of our honours class of 2023 who achieved a 100% pass rate and several distinctions. 9 Of our honours students are carrying on with their Masters degrees this year, including Dietre Stols and Rebecca Reyn-Stols who both received cum laude for their honours year. A congratulations to our Advanced Diploma students for completing their year and receiving their qualifications. And of course our Diploma students who have completed their 3 year course successfully.
