The urgency of this question is a reminder to all of us that extinction is forever. As a Native Hawaiian, observing the gradual extinction of a native species deeply wounds my naʻau. The interconnectedness between our culture, land, and wildlife is truly what makes Hawaiʻi so special. Witnessing a species fade away like the ʻAkikiki makes me realize how important it is to appreciate even more the very few that are left. The extinction of a native species is not just a loss of biodiversity; it is a loss of a living connection to our ancestors and our own identity as kanaka. - Ben C - #makahikionamanunahele #MoNMN2024 #BirdsNotMosquitoes #IOlaNaManuNahele #ConservationPartnerships #EndangeredSpecies #BirdsofHawaii #NativeHawaiianBirds #bird #ResistExtinction #aolemosquitoes #namanunahele

Yesterday was National Endangered Species Day. The Hawaiian islands are the extinction capital of the world, and two Christmases ago we had the opportunity to go birding on the Big Island of Hawai’i to see some of the endemic Hawaiian honeycreepers. These birds are some of the rarest in the world, and there are teams of dedicated, incredible people who are watching extinction happen in real time and working as hard as they can to stop it. This is a male ‘Akiapōlā’au, a rare honeycreeper native to forests above 5,000 feet elevation on the Big Island. Facing existential threats from habitat loss, invasive species, and avian malaria, best estimates suggest there are only 1,900 of these birds left in the wild. Follow @birdsnotmosquitoes and @birds_hawaii_pastpresent for more information on Hawaiian honeycreepers and what you can do to support efforts to save them. #hawaiianhoneycreepers #fbpc_birds #women_wildlife_photography #birdphotography #nativehawaiianbirds #planetbirds #akiapolaau #birdsnotmosquitoes #resistextinction

The ‘anianiau is the smallest Hawaiian honeycreeper in existence today, weighing only 9-10 g. The male is a nearly uniform bright yellow to yellow-green, whereas the female is a slightly duller yellow-green. Attributes such as pale lores, nearly uniform coloration, and small size distinguish this species from other similar Hawaiian honeycreepers. - - #BirdsNotMosquitoes #IOlaNaManuNahele #ConservationPartnerships #EndangeredSpecies #BirdsofHawaii #NativeHawaiianBirds #manu #ResistExtinction #aolemosquitoes

It's National Endangered Species Day. Hawaii is often referred to as the "Endangered Species Capital of the World" with over 400 species listed as endangered and threatened. Being so isolated many of our plants and animals evolved, adapted and are found nowhere else in the world. You can help protect these unique and special species by learning what makes them so amazing, knowing how to spot and report invasive species, and minimizing your impact in our native ecosystems. 📸 credit: MKWP Field Crew #nationalendangerspeciesday #hawaii #protectournativespecies #nativehawaiianbirds #nativehawaiiansnails #nativehawaiianinsects #nativehawaiianplants #ConservationEfforts #conservationmatters

KSM’s Grade 4 Haumāna worked diligently to carefully curate a production they felt needed attention and they did a wonderful job on their production- from building the set, to creating costumes to the storytelling. Hūlo! . Their mo’olelo talks about 4 nene (mama and 3 keiki) being displaced by the building of the telescope on Hāleakalā then by mosquitoes, cats, vehicles and human pollution. Hawai’i has suffered wider spread extinctions than anywhere else in the world. Our keiki says without effective intervention our native birds could be lost forever. #Clermontia species, collectively called ‘oha wai in Hawaiian, are another important group of native plants for our native forest birds. Since April is #NativeHawaiianPlantMonth, and 2024 is Ka Makahiki o Nā Manu Nahele or the Year of the Forest Birds, we will be posting photos of Hawaiian native plants that provide food and habitat for our forest birds. These long, curved flowers provide nectar for our nectarivorous birds. The shape ensures that the birds need to reach deep into the corolla to obtain nectar, in the process often receiving a dusting of pollen, which they then deposit on the next flower they visit. ‘Amakihi (Chlorodrepanis spp.), ‘i‘iwi (Drepanis coccinea), and ‘apapane (Himatione sanguinea) are often seen visiting ‘oha wai flowers, but in the past such extinct species such as the Hawaiʻi mamo (Drepanis pacifica) were also important. 1) Clermontia_pyrularia ( #HakalauForestNationalWildlifeRefgue), 2) Clermontia_lindseyana ( #HakalauForestNationalWildlifeRefuge). #Clermontialindseyana, #Clermontiapyrularia, #Campanulaceae, #NativeHawaiianPlantMonth2024, #MakahikioNaManuNahele, #YearoftheForestBirds, #NativeHawaiianbirds, #Hawaiiannativebirds, #BirdsofHawaii, #NativeHawaiianplants, #Hawaiiannativeplants, #EndemicHawaiianplants, #Hawaiianendemicplants, #EndangeredHawaiianplants, #Hawaiianendangeredplants, @riends_of_Hakalau, #HakalauForestNWR, #CTAHR, #CooperativeExtension, #CooperativeExtensionService

Pilo ( #Coprosma spp.) is the Hawaiian name for several species of shrubs or small trees that often bear bright red or orange fleshy fruits that resemble coffee berries. Since April is #NativeHawaiianPlantMonth, and 2024 is Ka Makahiki o Nā Manu Nahele or the Year of the Forest Birds, we will be posting photos of Hawaiian native plants that provide food and habitat for our forest birds. ‘Ōma‘o (Myadestes obscurus) are of course fond of the berries, but ‘amakihi (Chlorodrepanis spp.) have also been known to eat them. Pilo is in the coffee or madder family ( #Rubiaceae), hence the similarity in the fruit. 1) #Coprosma_rhynchocarpa, Volcano, Hawai‘i Island, 2) #Coprosma_ochracea, Volcano, Hawai‘i Island, 3) #Coprosma_montana, Mauna Loa, Hawai‘i Island. #Coprosmarhynchocarpa, #Coprosmaochracea, #Coprosmamontana, #NativeHawaiianPlantMonth2024, #MakahikioNaManuNahele, #YearoftheForestBirds, #NativeHawaiianbirds, #Hawaiiannativebirds, #BirdsofHawaii, #NativeHawaiianplants, #Hawaiiannativeplants, #EndemicHawaiianplants, #Hawaiianendemicplants, #CTAHR, #CooperativeExtension, #CooperativeExtensionService

My oldest son likes to ask if I could be any native bird, which one would I like to be. At the moment, I would have to say the 'io. Their survival success story is the culmination of conservation efforts, federal protection, reforestation of natural habitats and education. So many people doing so much work has given them the time and space to be beasts, to do what they have to, for their offspring and themselves. Stealing, eating the natives and the invasives, and sometimes dead animals aren't out of the question when faced with starvation, and also not without risks (getting shot, getting poisoned, getting whacked by other animals). But they've bounced back and are very much present in the forests of Volcano, where I count myself extremely lucky to hear and see them everyday. Kōlea ( #Myrsine spp.) are common understory and sometimes canopy trees that provide food for our native forest birds, including including the ‘ōma‘o (Myadestes obscurus) on Hawai‘i Island and the puaiohi (Myadestes palmeri) on Kaua‘i. Since April is #NativeHawaiianPlantMonth, and 2024 is Ka Makahiki o Nā Manu Nahele or the Year of the Forest Birds, we will be posting photos of Hawaiian native plants that provide food and habitat for our forest birds. Kōlea bear their small, white or pink flowers and dark blue or purple fruits along the stems. The new leaves are often magenta in color when they emerge from the buds, and many species have purple leaf petioles or midribs. There are 19 species of native Myrsine in Hawai‘i, all endemic. The island of Kaua‘i has the greatest diversity in the genus. 1) #Myrsine_lessertiana trees on a former ranch on Maunakea, 2) magenta liko (new leaves) of M. lessertiana on Mauna Loa, 3) flowers of #Myrsine_lanaiensis at Pu‘wa‘awa‘a on Hawai‘i Island, and 4) #Myrsine_linearifolia in Kōke‘e, Kaua‘i. #Myrsinelessertiana, #Myrsinesandwicensis, #Myrsinelinearifolia, #Primulaceae, #NativeHawaiianPlantMonth2024, #MakahikioNaManuNahele, #YearoftheForestBirds, #NativeHawaiianbirds, #Hawaiiannativebirds, #BirdsofHawaii, #NativeHawaiianplants, #Hawaiiannativeplants, #EndemicHawaiianplants, #Hawaiianendemicplants, #CTAHR, #CooperativeExtension, #CooperativeExtensionService

The dense clusters of ‘ōlapa ( #Cheirodendron_trigynum) fruit are an important food source for our frugivorous native forest birds, including the ‘ōma‘o (Myadestes obscurus) on Hawai‘i Island, the puaiohi (Myadestes palmeri) on Kaua‘i, and even the ‘alala (Corvus hawaiiensis) when it still existed in the wild. Since April is #NativeHawaiianPlantMonth, and 2024 is Ka Makahiki o Nā Manu Nahele or the Year of the Forest Birds, we will be posting photos of Hawaiian native plants that provide habitat for our forest birds. Perhaps the closest relationship between a native Hawaiian plant and a native forest bird is the bond between the palila ( #Loxioides_bailleui) and māmane ( #Sophora_chrysophylla) trees. Since April is #NativeHawaiianPlantMonth, and 2024 is Ka Makahiki o Nā Manu Nahele or the Year of the Forest Birds, we will be posting photos of Hawaiian native plants that provide habitat for our forest birds. #Palila are endangered and today are only found in the māmane forest on the upper slopes of Mauna Kea. Their food consists of the seeds and young shoots of māmane trees and the insects that live on them. While much of the former māmane forest has been lost to grazing and wildfires, today the Mauna Kea Forest Restoration Project @mkfrp is restoring hundreds of acres of māmane on Mauna Kea so that the palila’s future will be secure. #Sophora, #Sophorachrysophylla, #Fabaceae, #Loxioides, #Loxioidesbailleui, #NativeHawaiianPlantMonth2024, #MakahikioNaManuNahele, #YearoftheForestBirds, #NativeHawaiianbirds, #Hawaiiannativebirds, #BirdsofHawaii, #NativeHawaiianplants, #Hawaiiannativeplants, #EndemicHawaiianplants, #Hawaiianendemicplants, #CTAHR, #CooperativeExtension, #CooperativeExtensionService

Koa, #Acacia_koa, is the largest canopy tree in most Native Hawaiian forests and provides habitat for many native forest birds, including this little alawī ( #Oreomystis_mana) in the third photo. Since April is #NativeHawaiianPlantMonth, and 2024 is Ka Makahiki o Nā Manu Nahele or the Year of the Forest Birds, we will be posting photos of Hawaiian native plants that provide habitat for our forest birds. Huge koa trees provide nesting space for the cavity-nesting ‘akepa (Loxops coccineus). Other insectivorous birds such as the ‘elepaio (Chasiempis sandwichensis), puaiohi (Myadestes palmeri), ‘alauahio (the Maui creeper, Paroreomyza montana), and kiwikiu (the Maui parrotbill, Pseudonestor xanthophrys) forage for insects on the dead branches and flaky bark of the koa tree. Fortunately, koa trees grow quickly, and planted koa can begin providing bird habitat in less than ten years. The #HakalauForestNationalWildlifeRefuge on Hawai‘i Island supports the largest planted koa forest, with over 4,000 acres of koa forest habitat restored. @friends_of_Hakalau, #HakalauForest, #HakalauForestNWR, #NativeHawaiianPlantMonth2024, #MakahikioNaManuNahele, #YearoftheForestBirds, #NativeHawaiianbirds, #Hawaiiannativebirds, #BirdsofHawaii, #NativeHawaiianplants, #Hawaiiannativeplants, #EndemicHawaiianplants, #Hawaiianendemicplants, #Acacia, #Acaciakoa, #Fabaceae, #Oreomystismana, #Oreomystis, #Loxopsmana, #Loxops, #alawi, #CTAHR, #CooperativeExtension, #CooperativeExtensionService

‘Ōhi‘a ( #Metrosideros_polymorpha) provides nourishment and habitat for many of our native forest birds in Hawai‘i, including this ‘i‘iwi ( #Drepanis_coccinea). Since April is #NativeHawaiianPlantMonth, and 2024 is Ka Makahiki o Nā Manu Nahele or the Year of the Forest Birds, we will be posting photos of Hawaiian native plants that provide habitat for our forest birds. Since ‘ōhi‘a are our most abundant native trees, they are critical for most forest birds. The trees provide nectar for ‘i‘iwi, ‘apapane (Himatione sanguinea), ‘amakihi (Chlorodrepanis spp.), ‘ākohekohe (Palmeria dolei), and ʻanianiau (Magumma parva). ‘Elepaio (Chasiempis sandwichensis), puaiohi (Myadestes palmeri), ‘alawī (the Hawai‘i creeper, Oreomystis mana), ‘alauahio (the Maui creeper, Paroreomyza montana), and kiwikiu (the Maui parrotbill, Pseudonestor xanthophrys) forage for insects on ‘ōhi‘a bark and in the buds. ‘Akepa (Loxops coccineus) nest in cavities in huge, old-growth ‘ōhi‘a trees. Even pueo (the Hawaiian owl, Asio flammeus sandwichensis) and ‘io (the Hawaiian hawk, Buteo solitarius), perch on giant ohia trees. Oʻahu ʻŌʻō tail keychain. Iʻve been wanting to make this design for awhile now and it feels so strange and exciting for it to finally be here. The Oʻahu ʻōʻō (Moho apicalis) was an endemic bird found only on the island of Oʻahu. These manu nahele, members of the Mohoidae (ʻōʻō) family, originated from birds that first arrived to Hawaiʻi over 15 million years ago. There were four known ʻōʻō species, all with distinct plumage. Of these, the Hawaiʻi ʻōʻō and Oʻahu ʻōʻō had magnificent, long tails. Unfortunately, all ʻōʻō and their relatives are gone; this is the only bird family to have gone extinct in recent global history. Their loss is significant. The legacy of ʻōʻō live on, however, even if they are extinct. These birds were chief among the species valued for their plumage, their prized yellow hulu (feathers) used extensively in ʻahu ʻula (capes), mahiole (helmets), lei hulu, and other featherwork. One ʻahu ʻula could require feathers from tens of thousands of birds. These hulu were gathered carefully and preserved over generations due to their value and scarcity (each ʻōʻō only had a few yellow feathers). The Oʻahu ʻōʻō was last observed in 1837, another of many native bird extinctions in Hawaiʻi. Disease, habitat loss, and other factors are cause for their extinction. This species was personally one of the first birds that fascinated me as a child, and they are still one of my favorites. I wish they were still around. This one will make his debut at Merrie Monarch, stop by 4/5 and 4/6 at @islandnationhawaii. After that, itʻll be up on the website :) #keychain #oahuoo #extinctbirds #extinctanimals #hawaiianbirds #nativehawaiianbirds #enamelpins #enamelkeychain #hawaiiart #hawaiiartist #hawaiiartists #mohoidae #wildlifeart #wildlifeartist #featherwork #oahu #mahiole #ahuula

Since then, both its range and abundance have severely declined, and it is now only found in high-elevation forests. The species was listed as endangered in 1967 under the Endangered Species Act.” It sure what kind of spider he grabbed. #honeycreeper #forestbirds #forestbirding #bird #endemicbirds #criticallyendangered #criticallyendangeredspecies #nativehawaiianplants #nativehawaiianbirds #best_birds_photography #hawaiiisland #birdphotography #hakalauforest

Intarsia I’iwi (Hawai’ian scarlet honeycreeper) 10” x 10” Lāna’i Koa wood, Silky Oak & Milo wood . . . The ʻiʻiwi (Drepanis coccinea) or scarlet honeycreeper is a species of Hawaiian honeycreeper. The ʻiʻiwi is a symbol of Hawaiʻi and was once one of the most common endemic birds of the Hawaiian Islands. Avian malaria, the death of the Ohia tree by disease (a food source) and non native predators have reduced the range and population by 90%. #iiwi #honeycreeper #nativehawaiianbirds #nativehawaiian #bird #birds #birdart #woodsculpture #intarsia #woodcarving #woodart #art #carving #koa #koawood #hawaiiart #hawaiiartist #hawaii #lanai #lanaihawaii
